The restaurant "Toh-tei" is a somewhat famous establishment located in Shinjuku, with its main store at the south exit of Shinjuku station. It is not a large chain but has a small take-out shop in the Odakyu department store basement in Shinjuku. The shop gives off a small store vibe and it seems like they don't cook on-site but bring the food from their main store. They offer three types of eel skewers priced at 1,980 yen, 2,400 yen, and 2,800 yen, as well as three types of eel bento boxes priced at 1,700 yen, 2,300 yen, and 3,100 yen. On the day of the visit, all the eels were from Kagoshima prefecture. The eel bento box for 1,700 yen was ordered. It had a traditional and charming packaging with all the necessary items like paper napkin, chopsticks, sauce, and sansho pepper, most of which had the shop's logo on them. The eel in the box was small as it was the cheapest option, but the box was well-made with a fabric-like material on the lid that absorbed moisture. Although the eel had been cooked some time ago, it still had a crispy texture on the skin and was quite delicious. The flesh was moderately thick, well-cooked without any fishy smell, and had a high-quality preparation. The sauce was soy-based, not too sweet, and tasty. The rice was cooked firm and paired well with the sauce. Although the overall portion size was a bit small for a meal, considering the high price of eel, it was reasonable. It felt like a good deal to have domestically sourced eel at a relatively low price for take-out. This is a recommended eel restaurant in Shinjuku.
