Grilled motsu (offal) and highball! I wanted to have a drink at Fujiya, a newly opened restaurant. The design of the restaurant is calming, even though it's new. The atmosphere of the motsu-yaki (grilled offal) genre, with its Showa era vibe, is enjoyable. Note: The restaurant is clean and tidy!
There are many options, but I chose from the menu where there are recommended items. What was incredibly delicious was:
- Toro liver sashimi: As the name suggests, it's really fatty. It melts in your mouth, and wait, this is liver? There's no trace of the usual liver texture, just a sweet, smooth, and moist flavor. Oh, I want to eat this every day.
- Kokoro no kori (heart tubes): A part that can only be taken from 1 to 2 pieces per head. It's the connection between the heart and liver. You can enjoy the muscular texture of the heart and the crunchy texture of the blood vessels. I imagined something tube-like, but it's more like heart. It does have a slightly firm heart-like texture. Just try something unusual and have a laugh!
- Tsukune: Packed with green onions, the meat is juicy. The cartilage is finely chopped and included (wait, it was included, right?!), providing a great texture. Juicy with meat juices, delicious! The addition of raw green peppers, which complement the meat, is a nice touch that balances out the meat and alcohol. There was also negiyaki (green onion pancake) on the menu, which was fun and delicious.
We also ordered meat sashimi and enjoyed the fresh motsu, which is their specialty. We toasted with a draft beer and then enjoyed the Hakka highball. The motsu-yaki was delicious! We were getting full, so we finished with rice.
- Egoma leaf rice ball: The egoma leaf is soaked in oil, sticking perfectly to the rice ball. The unity with the white rice is amazing. And, you know what, it's sprinkled with seaweed, which makes it even more delicious. Eating motsu-yaki and rice balls, enjoying the bound meal, felt a bit sinful.
The restaurant is small, but there is a basement floor and terrace seating, so it has a decent capacity. I was drinking in the middle of the week, and customers kept coming in, so I recommend making a reservation! Despite being newly opened, it's popular maybe because you can enjoy fresh motsu. Just come out of the Shinjuku Sanchome exit, take the elevator, make a U-turn, and you'll be in the world of motsu-yaki. I want to visit this place not just for a drink, but also just to eat Toro liver sashimi!
