This May, my companion and I visited a beautiful building located two floors underground in front of Ueno Station. It was a izakaya called "Kisai Ueno Ekimae" that we stumbled upon. The interior of the restaurant had a calming atmosphere, with a central area for table seating and enchanting lighting that set the mood perfectly. Surrounding the table seating were many semi-private rooms, and we opted for one of these. The spacious and comfortable area had a total of 195 seats, with additional sunken kotatsu-style private rooms towards the back, making it quite versatile. While the restaurant is registered as "Shikisai Ueno Ekimae" on Tabelog, the sign and appearance of the place indicate it as "Shikisai Bettei". When making a reservation through Tabelog, you might momentarily wonder if you're at the right place. The specialty of the restaurant is fresh seafood and Kyushu cuisine, and orders are placed through a mobile ordering system. Among the potato fry flavors we tried, salt was the best. The chicken broth rice porridge was rich and tasty, a perfect way to end the meal. The black sesame ice cream with white dumplings was a personal favorite of mine, and I enjoyed it all by myself. The combination of black sesame ice cream with white dumplings and black syrup was superb. Ueno is known for its lively izakayas, but this place offers a calm atmosphere for dining despite being located near the station, making it a great choice for those who are not fans of rowdy establishments.

I used it during lunch time on weekends and ordered sesame mackerel, simmered tripe, horse meat, rolled omelette, charcoal-grilled dishes, chicken nanban, and fried rice, I think. Some dishes don't have photos... My personal recommendation is the rolled omelette, it comes out piping hot and is delicious. I wish the fried rice had more quantity. It might have been because it was a less busy time during lunch on weekends, but the food was served quickly.

We made a reservation for over 30 people. Based on the photos of the restaurant, we were expecting to have one private room for our group. However, the restaurant provided separate rooms for 30 people and 5 people. There was no mention of a maximum capacity of 30 people, so we assumed we would all be together in one place for dining. This caused a lot of inconvenience for us. There was no prior explanation about this arrangement, so our social gathering was split into two groups. The service was also lacking, as we had to wait over 10 minutes for our drinks after ordering. It might have been better if they had prepared bottled beer in advance. After the initial drink, the rest were served in pitchers, which felt a bit disorganized.

The restaurant was spacious and the food was delicious. Above all, I was surprised by the great cost performance.
