The counter was almost full, but there were empty tables. On a weekday evening, I ordered a tempura bowl for ¥2750. I really wanted to eat a tempura bowl with assorted tempura toppings. The bowl included shiitake mushrooms, eggplant, thick white fish, conger eel, two prawns, and tempura. The conger eel had a slightly off-putting taste. I wished the rice was a bit firmer, but considering the older clientele, this texture might be more popular. The miso soup had seaweed and mushrooms, and the pickles were pickled mustard greens and radish. Surprisingly, the restaurant played a mix of old and new Western music. There were so many tempting options like myoga, deep-fried eggplant, deep-fried clams, pike conger eel, and tempura ice cream, so I'll go for a la carte next time!

Located in the Shinjuku Keio Dining area on the 8th floor of Keio Department Store Shinjuku, Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi offers a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of a Showa era department store dining floor. Visited for the second time in two years on a Saturday afternoon with three relatives. We chose the lunch menu items for the weekend, with each of us opting for the following: Vegetable Assorted Meal for 1,870 yen, Tempura Meal for 2,750 yen, and Kaji Gozen for 3,190 yen. The contents were as follows: Vegetable Assorted Meal for 1,870 yen - Two prawns, five types of vegetables, seafood, tempura, and rice. Tempura Meal for 2,750 yen - Two prawns, two types of seafood, two types of vegetables, tempura, and rice. Kaji Gozen for 3,190 yen - Today's small dish, assorted sashimi, two prawns, two types of vegetables, tempura, and rice. In conclusion, the Vegetable Assorted Meal for 1,870 yen was considered reasonable and satisfying.

Lucky food was tempura, which I decided to eat after seeing it in Dr. Copa's fortune telling. It was all freshly fried and deliciously luxurious. The shrimp in the small tendon was huge! The staff were all polite and it was a lovely dining experience. I had plans later so I couldn't drink alcohol, but I enjoyed Perrier instead. I also tried tempura ice cream for the first time and it was delicious! I definitely want to go back when I can drink alcohol. Thank you for the delicious tempura and meal time. I will definitely visit again.

Tempura specialty store located on the 8th floor of Keio Department Store (Shinjuku branch). The store opens at 11 am, so if you want to avoid crowds, it's best to visit early. "Tsuna Hachi" has three locations in the Shinjuku area alone: "Keio Store," "Main Store," and "Shinjuku Takashimaya Store." The restaurant has both counter and table seating, with a clientele that tends to be older. During lunchtime, there are budget-friendly options such as "Hiruzen" for 1540 yen, "Hiruten-don" for 1540 yen, and "Vegetable Assortment" for 1760 yen. The Hiruten-don for 1540 yen includes freshly fried tempura such as shrimp (2 pieces), shrimp tempura, white fish, and green pepper. Served with a sweet Kanto-style sauce that goes well with rice. Warm tea and pickles are also included. The tables are partitioned for privacy, and the staff, including the chefs, wear masks. Credit card payment is accepted even for lunch. While the atmosphere is not luxurious, it's a casual option for enjoying tempura for lunch in Shinjuku. Next to the store, there are "Ginza Tenichi" and "Nadaman" in Odakyu Department Store, offering different options based on your budget. Compared to "Tenichi" and "Nadaman," the prices at "Tsuna Hachi" are more affordable. It's strange that there are no lunch menu signs displayed outside the store. I made sure there was a lunch menu before entering, but it's unclear why they don't advertise it. Tempura is a dish that's hard to make at home, so even during the pandemic, it's worth visiting a restaurant to enjoy it.

For today's lunch, I had a reunion with my senior president at Shinjuku Station. I chose the Great Up version with conger eel. I finished off with tempura on top of rice bowl. The freshly fried tempura was really delicious. Founded in the 13th year of the Taisho era, this tempura specialty shop has its main store in Shinjuku. In addition to the main store in Shinjuku, there are also Tsunohazu-an, Shinjuku Takashimaya store, and Keio store. The main store is always crowded and the aisles are somewhat narrow, but the Keio store, being in a different location, has many elderly customers and provides a spacious area to enjoy tempura. Just like the main store, there are counter seats and table seats available. Even though they do not use high-end ingredients, you can enjoy Edo-style tempura with the aroma of sesame oil at a reasonable price. The tempura is fried by the chef right in front of you, so eating freshly fried tempura one by one is truly delicious. The kakiage comes towards the end, so you can put it on top of rice, pour tempura sauce over it, and enjoy it as a kakiage rice bowl.

On a regular day off, I visited Neko Okusan for lunch. I hadn't had tempura in a while, so I was looking forward to it. This time, I didn't have any alcohol. The meal was served promptly. The first half consisted of two prawns, eggplant, pumpkin, and green pepper, which were quite tasty. However, the second half of the tempura basket had some issues. The tempura with leeks, shiitake mushrooms, and scallions was overly hard. The scallions were a material I quite like, but they were difficult to chew due to being slightly burnt on the outside. The tempura was also harder than usual, making it challenging to separate the prawns with chopsticks. The rice, miso soup, and pickles were delicious as usual, but when it came to the main tempura, I definitely drew the short straw today. What a shame!

Established in the 13th year of the Taisho era, Tempura specialty restaurant Shinjuku Tsunahachi. Even before the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection, Shinjuku Tsunahachi has been reducing its number of stores. And with the spread of the new coronavirus infection, over the past year, they have been accelerating the closure of stores such as Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Nishiguchi store and Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Kinshicho store. Located on the 8th floor of Keio Department Store Shinjuku, in the atmosphere of a Showa-era department store dining floor, Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Keio store is part of the Shinjuku Keio Dining area. Some of the stores in the Shinjuku Keio Dining area have been closed due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection emergency declaration. This was my first visit to Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Keio store for lunch on a weekday. The interior of the store seemed a bit outdated. It was quite empty, and I was quickly seated at the counter. I chose the Nisaizen lunch set (two shrimp, three seasonal vegetables, seafood, tempura, all together) for 1,760 yen each. First, two shrimp, green peppers, eggplant, pumpkin, sweet potato, scallops, and tempura were served at a fast pace. I wish they had given me a little more time to enjoy the meal.

In the midst of an emergency situation, I had some urgent business to attend to and made my way to Naito Shinjuku. It was well past lunchtime when I finished my errand. Considering the current time, the only place where I could grab lunch was a department store, so I decided to go to Keio Department Store. Feeling a bit heavy in the stomach today, I had a craving for tempura, so I headed to "Tsuna Hachi." It was just before 2 PM, and the restaurant was quite empty, so I was seated right away. I started with a glass of sake, served at room temperature, and made a toast with Kuro Matsushiro. For my meal, I chose the same as last time, the "Nisai Zen" set which includes 2 prawns, 5 types of vegetables, fried smelt, and tempura. The first half of the tempura arrived - 2 prawns, eggplant, bell pepper, pumpkin, and sweet potato. Two types of salt and tempura sauce were provided. The table used to have 3-4 types of salt, but now, probably due to infection prevention measures, they were served individually on plates. Wasabi salt and natural salt were placed at both ends of the plate. As I enjoyed these, my main meal arrived - white rice, pickles, and miso soup with clams. The miso soup had a nice clam flavor. The second half of the tempura also arrived - smelt, green onion, and tempura. I particularly enjoy the green onion tempura. It goes well with sake. Despite having a late lunch, I was quite satisfied with the meal. Bon appétit!

This time, I went to the tempura restaurant "Tsunahachi" located in Shinjuku Keio Department Store for lunch. There was a bit of a line, but I was able to enter quickly. I ordered the lunch menu and a beer. The shrimp tempura had just the right amount of batter, and both the salt and tempura dipping sauce were delicious. I felt like having some sake, so I ordered it here. I also had smelt fish and eggplant tempura. While it may not beat the deliciousness of ayu (sweetfish), the smelt fish was quite tasty! The eggplant had a nice sweetness to it and was delicious. I forgot what the last tempura was, haha. To finish, rice, miso soup, and pickles are served, and the rice was shiny and very tasty. There's nothing particularly special about this place, but I think it's a reasonably priced and easy-to-visit tempura restaurant. One person's bill was 3700 yen.

On Sunday, I came to Keio Department Store for shopping and had a late holiday lunch. There weren't many customers that day, and the lines in the restaurant area were short. There was no line at Tsunahachi, but there was one person waiting inside, so I was second in line. After a while, a table opened up and I was seated. This time, I ordered the most affordable lunch option, the "Vegetable Meal". It includes two prawns, three vegetable dishes, seafood, and tempura. I started with a cup of sake. I ordered hot sake and made a toast. Soon, the prawns and three vegetable dishes arrived. The vegetables were eggplant, sweet potato, and green onion. The green onion was particularly delicious with its rich flavor. The eggplant was also soft and well-fried. The prawns were seasoned with various salts and were enjoyable from head to tail. Eventually, the main meal arrived. I had white rice, while my wife had a tempura-topped tendon. The seafood consisted of mushrooms stuffed with prawns. All the tempura was light and satisfying. It was a delicious meal. Thank you!

The most comfortable place to have lunch at a tempura restaurant in Shinjuku on March 16, 2015 might be "Keio Department Store". Similar to the department store "Fukuya" in Hiroshima, the quality of the food is high but there is a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel at ease. The tempura is served one piece at a time in a traditional tempura restaurant style, with a perfect balance of batter and frying. It is not as heavy as the typical fried food you find in the city, but it is not overly crispy either. It has a good balance, just like Keio Department Store.

The taste of the tempura is good. The freshly fried tempura, the sweetness and depth of the tempura dipping sauce are truly outstanding at Tsunahachi. However, the service is lacking. Even though there are empty seats in the restaurant, the cleanup is slow and it takes a while to be seated. There were mistakes with drink orders, and they couldn't follow the order in which the dishes were supposed to be served, which ruined the dining experience. The payment process at the register also takes quite a bit of time. Perhaps due to the high number of elderly customers in the department store, they may be taking it easy on customer service. The low rating on Tabelog is probably due to these reasons.

The items I received today were a small plate of boiled komatsuna, one shrimp, one young ayu fish, a small squid, about one-sixth of an onion, two green beans, half of an eel, a small tempura bowl, red miso soup, pickles, and tea. The young ayu fish was cute and delicious, and the shrimp head was also tasty. The green beans and onion were delicious. However, the squid was very tough and rubbery, not cut properly and in a square eraser-like shape. The eel was tender but had a slightly fishy and oily taste. I was looking forward to the eel, but the size provided was just right. The small shrimp in the tempura bowl was also tough, and I realized at the end that the palate cleanser was forgotten. The restaurant was busy, and the staff seemed overwhelmed, so I quietly left without pointing out the mistake. However, after reading reviews later, I saw that others also did not receive the palate cleanser, which made me feel disappointed that there was probably another small plate that I missed out on. If I have the chance, I would like to visit again to try their delicious tempura.
