I particularly like this restaurant, Ratomato, in the Nepal Food Heaven area of Okubo. The atmosphere is great. You can enjoy the night view of Shinjuku at night, and it's bright and pleasant during the day. The interior is stylish and cute, appealing to young women. The food has also improved since the opening. They have a deluxe version of the Dal Bhat, and the taste is good. The Chatamari is crispy and moist, cooked just right and delicious. The Kaja Set is of high quality as well, making it suitable for lunch, snacks, or drinks. The entrance may be hard to find, but once inside, it's really cozy. Highly recommended for women.

<Revisited in December 2021>
I revisited this restaurant during lunchtime, taking advantage of the points that were about to expire on their website. The service was provided by the tall Nepalese male waiter from my previous visit, along with a kind-looking petite male waiter. In the kitchen, there were three male cooks working. A monitor at the back of the restaurant was showing a program where Nepalese children were singing and being critiqued by what seemed to be a celebrity. I ordered the Buffalo Sekuwa (grilled water buffalo: 750 yen tax included), Steam Momo (Nepalese-style steamed dumplings: 600 yen), Jujudau (sweet yogurt: 350 yen), and the coupon service Matokati (milk tea boiled in a kiln). When I ordered the Buffalo, the waiter didn't understand at first, but when I said "Buff," the order went through. After about 10 minutes, the boneless Buffalo Sekuwa arrived. It came with the same cucumber and carrot slices with chili sauce as the Dal Bhat, and biting into it brought out the flavor. Squeezing lemon over the Buffalo Sekuwa and dipping it in chili sauce enhanced the taste, and I finished it all. Next, the six Steam Momos arrived, with chewy skin and flavorful filling (chicken?). Dipping them in the slightly spicy Golbheda Achar (tomato dip sauce) made them even more delicious. I couldn't tell if the Matokati was actually boiled in a kiln, but it had a gentle sweetness and was topped with mint, pairing well with the slightly sweet Jujudau with nuts. Unfortunately, I haven't tried the Bagdakpur specialty "King of Yogurt: Jujudau," so I couldn't compare the two. If I have the chance to go back again, I'd like to try the dishes I haven't eaten yet that are cooked in the kiln.

I heard they have Biryani, and it was delicious with lots of meat in a hot pot. I thought it might be small, but the pot was deep and satisfying. It was really hot, so be careful when using a spoon in the pot. I will definitely come back!

I visited on a Wednesday night and ordered the 2980 yen all-you-can-drink course. I was worried because it was cheap, but the restaurant was clean and felt like I was in Nepal. The view of the high-rise buildings in Shinjuku was amazing! The food was decent and delicious. The beer was cold and tasty. All the staff were foreigners but provided good service. I recommend this Nepalese restaurant.

Today, I felt like having Nepalese curry for lunch, so I decided to visit this restaurant for the second time since it opened. When I entered, there were three other groups of customers, all enjoying their meals leisurely. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, which adds to the overall experience. I thought about ordering the Simple Dal Bhat, but decided to go for the Ratomato Set to treat myself. I chose the mutton and vegetable curry. The waiter, who spoke Japanese fluently, was attentive and not intrusive, providing a good service. The Ratomato Set arrived quite quickly, and the papadum was crispy, unlike my previous experience at another restaurant. The curries were not too heavy, with a light and easy-to-eat flavor, which left me fully satisfied. The only downside was that the portion size was quite large. I didn't plan on getting a rice refill, but ended up adding about half more to finish everything. I was so full that I felt like my stomach was going to explode. I wasn't sure how to use the ghee that was served on the side, but I found that adding a little to the rice or curry enhanced the richness, so I ended up buying some at the store after leaving the restaurant. It has been useful at home as well. I look forward to coming back next time to try the Sekuwa.

I was hungry, so I headed to the restaurant when it opened at 11 o'clock. It had a great view of the Yamanote Line and the buildings. The atmosphere was cozy with a nice foreign feel. I enjoyed chai with the lunch set, and the curry and lentil curry were both delicious and spicy. The rice was long-grain. The staff were friendly. I want to go back again.

Lunch at Rato Mato, a clay oven restaurant. I had the Bandit Chicken Curry for 850 yen (plus 5% if using Suica). I paid in cash. The service was good, the food was served quickly, and it tasted great. They provided water, the portion size was good, and it was worth the price. The curry was spicy but flavorful, and I finished it quickly. The roti was refillable, which was nice.

I think I have visited quite a few Indian and Nepalese restaurants in Okubo, but there are still some places I haven't been to. This one is on the 7th floor of a building. Okubo doesn't seem to have many tall buildings, but there are quite a few after all. When I arrived before 1 pm, there were about 10 customers already seated and 7 or 8 customers waiting. The lunch menu is roughly curry or biryani. Generally, the prices for lunch and dinner items are the same, but some lunch sets come with a drink. Items not available on the dinner menu include Kanaset and Did set. Conversely, items not on the lunch menu include momo, chow mein, thukpa, sekuwa, sukuti, and sadheko. I ordered mutton biryani and Kanaset. It took 20 minutes for the food to be served. Based on observing the serving times for other customers, Kanaset was served quickly, so it seems the biryani took longer to prepare. Biryani: Served in a pot with a pie crust lid. This style of serving was new to me. The rice was slightly firm with subtle spices. The raita was also good. Kanaset: A typical dal bhat, as commonly found in Okubo. Having been in India just a week before, I couldn't help but compare it to the local version. The spiciness was almost like the authentic version, giving it an elegant touch. (May 2023)

I chose to take a friend who has never tried Nepalese cuisine to this restaurant. The food is delicious and the restaurant is beautiful, with dishes served in traditional Nepalese clay pots called "matka". The performance of pouring Nepalese traditional liquor "chang" was also entertaining. While deep restaurants in Okubo are great, I recommend Ratomato for inviting someone to try Nepalese cuisine for the first time!

The other day, I visited Ratomato Darbar to enjoy the delicious dishes I had at a Nepalese party. I tried the Ratomato Darbar for 1300 yen and a Nepalese Arna beer for 550 yen. The Darbar is served in a Nepalese red clay dish called Ratomato. The Dal curry was light and tasty, with options like chicken curry and mutton curry which had a nice level of spiciness. Putting ghee on the rice and eating it with Murako Achar and side dishes made it even more delicious. Although rice and curry were refillable, the portion was generous so I had to pass on seconds. Personally, my favorite Darbars are Aragan and Sansar, but Ratomato Darbar lived up to my expectations. The fact that almost all the customers were Nepalese also added to the high rating. Thank you for the meal.

I was invited by a Nepalese friend who has been living in Japan for a long time to go eat delicious Nepalese cuisine at "Rato Mato" in Okubo. According to him, it is actually Newari cuisine (the cuisine of the Newar people living in Kathmandu). It is just a 2-minute walk from Okubo Station. Along the way, there are many Asian shops, including Korean ones. Rato Mato is located on the 7th floor of a mixed-use building. When taking the elevator up, I felt a bit anxious about what kind of place it would be, but once inside, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is simple and very stylish. You can see a beautiful night view of the high-rise buildings from the window, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Since I have hardly eaten Nepalese cuisine before, my friend who knows it well ordered the following menu for us: - Mutton chili sukuti (dried mutton dish) - Chicken chili (chicken dish) - Sadheko momo (a dish of momo dumplings) - Mix bara (bean pancakes) - Chicken wings - Aloo jeera (spiced potatoes) - Mix chow mein (stir-fried noodles) - Lal mohan (sweet yogurt) Perhaps because there were many Nepalese customers, the dishes tasted very authentic and flavorful, with a good amount of spices. We naturally enjoyed some drinks as well, including Everest beer, Old Durbar (Nepalese whiskey), and finally, Matka chai (milk tea). We were satisfied with both the taste and portion sizes, and the cost was very reasonable at around 4000 yen per person (including tax). Although we didn't order curry this time, they also offer lunch/dinner sets with curry, so I definitely want to come back again. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

On Saturday, a little past 12 o'clock, I visited a Nepalese restaurant on a high floor. The restaurant was about half full, and the prices were reasonable for Okubo area. I enjoyed a Nepalese vodka highball starting with a beer. We had a great time snacking on Sa Deco while ordering dishes like mutton chili, buffalo choila, and steamed momo. The food was delicious with strong spices, but it would have been better to order some rice dishes as well for balance. The prices were around 500-600 yen per dish, which was very good. The atmosphere was nice, and overall, I thought it was a great restaurant.

In the Shin-Okubo area, there is a place called Ratmato where you can get a dal bhat set with a drink for only 600 yen, which is quite cost-effective. Initially, you could also choose mutton curry, but it seems like that option is no longer available. However, even considering that, you can still enjoy a delicious dal bhat at a great value!

A friend from Hokkaido came to visit, so we had dinner with kids at the Nepalese restaurant Rato Mato in Okubo. We had only been there during the day before, but the night view was beautiful. We tried the Nepalese version of doburoku called Chan, which was poured from a high place with a high level of performance. It was low in alcohol content and easy to drink, similar to makgeolli. We also had Panipuri as a snack, which was a bit tricky to fill on our own. The combination of acidity, spiciness, and the creamy texture of potatoes was perfect. We ordered Pork Sekuwa, which was garlicky and not too spicy, so it was okay for the kids. We shared a Kaja Set, with the mutton being quite spicy and flavorful. The dried rice Chiura, crunchy soybeans, boiled eggs, and other items were also kid-friendly. The fermented bamboo shoot curry might be a hit or miss for some people due to its authentic taste. I love the Soup Momo, but it was too spicy for the kids, so I regret not ordering steamed momo instead. We also ordered Paratha for the kids, but they found it too spicy, so we should have gone with Chow Mein (Tibetan-style fried noodles). We had a light meal and drinks, and the total bill for two adults and two kids was around 6000 yen.

Nepalese restaurants are quite common, but it's hard to find a Nepalese cuisine specialty store. This restaurant uses dishes baked with red clay, which are traditionally used in ceremonies and such. It's great to experience this culture.
- Pot-baked mutton biryani
It looks cute. The surface of the bread is quite firm, and has a crispy texture when cut with a knife. While wild biryani is good, this biryani is very elegant in its presentation.
- Buffalo grill
When I ordered buffalo choila, the waiter said, "We can prepare buffalo grill today." I didn't know the difference, so I agreed. The buffalo grill that arrived was a slightly smaller, spiced meat. It had a strong chewy texture and a gradually expanding flavor.
- Lal Mohan
It's like a doughnut ball dipped in honey. It's delicious on its own, but it's also refreshing and tasty with yogurt. However, it's quite sweet, so it may be categorized as very sweet for most people. There are many other items on the menu, and I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal.

Rato Mato in Okubo ✨Buffalo Choila and Chicken Biryani. The perfect amount of spices, just like in the textbook. Water buffalo is delicious! The Biryani was so good, even the bread on top was edible and made me happy. It was perfect for a Christmas Eve celebration. I was surprised by the perfect balance of spiciness and sweetness in the Chai, it's the best (о´∀`о)

Baked Dish Restaurant Rato Mato - A Nepalese restaurant that uses dishes made from red clay in Nepal. In the past, there were many one-coin Dal Bhat restaurants in the area, but the strong yen depreciation has hit each restaurant with price increases. This place offers a rare budget menu with a drink included for 600 yen. I chose the Pork Matkati, which was served in about 4 minutes. The mutton on the menu was painted black, probably due to the price. However, the pork was delicious enough, and the loose, hot dal was irresistible. They didn't ask if I wanted seconds, but the rice was made with Indica rice, and it was nice to have two types of sag and achar included for this price. The Matkati was a proud dish with a good balance of sweetness from cardamom and cinnamon. They accept QR code payments, but the content is so fulfilling and cheap that I felt it was more appropriate to pay in cash. (3.46⇒3.45)
