I had lunch at this restaurant today (as of May 3, 2021) and gave it a rating of 3.01. When I think of Tonkatsu Wako, I remember the first time I ate it when I was in high school, it was at a station building. Wako now has expanded beyond station buildings and office buildings to include roadside shops. This particular shop is one of those roadside shops. It is located about a 5-6 minute walk from Keio Horinouchi Station on the Keio Sagamihara Line, along the Tama Newtown street. Since it's a roadside shop, there is ample parking available, making it convenient for those coming by car. The entrance to the shop is step-free, allowing for smooth access. I later found out that this shop is equipped with a toilet, making it barrier-free. Upon entering the shop, there is a reception machine where you input the number of people in your group and then wait for a server to come out and guide you to your table. They also offer takeout, which can be ordered at the counter for payment or at an outside window. The seating mainly consists of table seating, with some counter seating available as well. Depending on the number of customers, the atmosphere can vary between lively and quiet. As I was dining alone, I was seated in the quieter section. I placed my order promptly upon being seated. The menu offers lunch specials as well as regular menu items. The lunch specials include the classic Wako Rice (Rosu Katsu), W Wako Rice (with 2 pieces of katsu), One-Bite Hirekatsu Rice (small), and Karin (One-Bite Hirekatsu, Squid Fry, Cheese-filled Menchi Katsu), with a few daily specials available. On this day, the daily specials were Sumire and Katsu Nitsuke. Of course, rice, miso soup, and cabbage refills are complimentary. After some consideration, I decided to order the Karin from the lunch menu. It was served in about 5 minutes. The One-Bite Hirekatsu was as delicious as always, with tender and juicy meat. The Squid Fry was an interesting shape but also tender and paired well with the sauce. The Cheese-filled Menchi Katsu had the classic Wako flavor that goes well with rice and even with alcohol. The cabbage was plentiful and satisfying. The rice, cooked in a feather pot, was unique and tasty. The feather pot rice is served in individual portions. The overall quality and taste of the food were consistent and satisfying, which is commendable. Due to the current circumstances with COVID-19, the shop is operating with takeout service only. Despite that, it's a place I would definitely visit whenever I crave tonkatsu.
