Inside Ikebukuro Station, inside the Tobu Department Store, I was looking for an early lunch as a little treat for myself. I had been passing by this place and was intrigued by their great value menu. When I entered, the staff greeted me with a lovely smile and offered me a table, but since I was dining alone, I asked if I could sit at the counter. The chef kindly gestured to a seat at the end of the counter where I could place my belongings. I ordered some tea and water, and the tea was a delicious roasted green tea. I opted for the value set menu and chose the spicy dipping sauce for my tempura. The set included pickles, seaweed salad, tempura dipping sauce, grated daikon radish, and a small dish of salt. The chef began preparing my meal, serving me rice and miso soup. I was delighted to learn that I could have seconds of both. The first dish was a tempura of three prawns and ginkgo nuts, which I enjoyed with both the salt and the dipping sauce. The prawns were juicy and the tempura batter was crispy. Next, I had tempura of Japanese yam and shiitake mushrooms, which I dipped in the sauce. The yam was slightly crunchy and the mushrooms were flavorful. Following that, I was served scallops with sea urchin and oysters in a crispy batter. The scallops were juicy, the sea urchin was mild in flavor, and the oysters were plump and delicious. I then had tempura of sand smelt and conger eel, which were both crispy and flavorful. Lastly, I added some eggplant tempura to my meal, which was juicy and flavorful. The meal was accompanied by perfectly cooked rice, delicious miso soup with clam broth, and a colorful and refreshing pickled side dish. After almost finishing my meal, I accidentally spilled my miso soup, but the staff were quick to clean it up.
