...but it's still Kitakata Ramen, a franchise. However, once you taste this flavor, you'll become captivated by it even if you don't know the taste of the original. The owner of the noodle shop Yu, which I often visit, is also fascinated by this taste. Although it's already October, the hot weather continues during the weekday lunch. I feel like enjoying that "special" taste of Kitakata Ramen after a long time. It's a bit of a journey, but let's stretch our legs to PePe near Seibu Shinjuku Station, on the outskirts of Kabukicho. Let's think about the closest route to the store. It seems better to turn at the Nakano Shinjuku Hyakunincho intersection and head towards Seibu Shinjuku Station from the Shokuan street rather than entering PePe from the Oogado on Kotaki Bridge Street. Once you reach Yasukuni Street, enter the alley immediately to find the store. The impressive white and black exterior gives off a flashy vibe despite the plain colors. When I entered the store, there were quite a few people, and there were two customers waiting. Since I've come this far, there's no turning back. The store was cool with the air conditioning, but I started sweating instantly. Surprisingly, the turnover was fast, and I was able to sit at the counter seat without waiting for more than 5 minutes. First, I quickly checked the menu. I'm interested in the set with grilled pork rice and ramen, but since I'm here, I want to have plenty of juicy chashu and extra noodles. I don't need to order rice separately since it should come as a service. I immediately ordered the "Chashu Noodle Large" with thick noodles. Of course, I'll ask for the lunch service rice as well. Looking at the menu, I thought that even here in Sakauchi, the impact of high prices was significantly reflected. Comparing it to when I used the store in Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho 4 years ago, it felt like the prices had increased considerably. The food was served in less than 10 minutes, so there was hardly any waiting stress. The chashu piled on the bowl was so much that the noodles were not visible, which was a relief. I took a piece of chashu and took a bite... and then another piece. It may be just a coincidence, but the taste of the chashu I enjoyed before was different. It wasn't the chashu I imagined from Sakauchi... It was a flavorful braised pork with plenty of fat, tender and juicy meat, and every bite spread deliciousness in my mouth. It was not tough and juicy, to say the least. The balance and deliciousness between the flat curly noodles and the soup remained unchanged from before. I was able to enjoy the service rice and pickles alternately. It was delicious, but the chashu, braised pork, was not satisfying, which was disappointing. It might be due to the high prices that they changed the cut to a cheaper arm meat. As I stepped outside, a heatwave that didn't feel like October enveloped my body. Now, I have 10 minutes until the afternoon work... If I run at full speed, it seems just right for burning calories.
