Lotus Root Turmeric Society Monthly Regular Meeting - August 2019 Part 1
A monthly drinking party with four drinking friends living near the Renkon Station on the Toei Mita Line. This month, on a certain Saturday in August, we decided to have our regular meeting near a station of the Toden Arakawa Line because one of our members, my partner, still has a strong desire to ride the Toden Arakawa Line. We made a reservation by phone the day before and visited this place in Otsuka.
Upon entering, the first impression was... it looks similar to "Kasuga" in Tobu Nerima where we visited in May! We were seated in the same area as well, giving us a strong sense of déjà vu.
First, as always, we all toasted with draft beer! The draft beer served in frosted mugs was excellent, especially on this extremely hot day.
We decided to order something unique to Hokkaido, as this place is a tavern specializing in Hokkaido cuisine. We ordered the "Hokkaido specialty roll (600 yen)" which included four different flavors: salmon salted roe, garlic, green chili miso, and crab miso. All of them were delicious, although the crab miso might not go well with vinegared rice. It was a nice accompaniment to sake.
The "Ezo deer hamburger (900 yen)" was prepared with various spices to eliminate the unique gamey smell. While I could taste the garlic, my friends mentioned the aroma of star anise. The hamburger itself was firm and the soup with mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley) had a deer-like taste, which might not suit everyone's palate.
The plump and juicy "Zangi" (fried chicken) and the whale sashimi in the sashimi platter were both enjoyable. The dishes were delicious and the drinks were plentiful.
Our group, the Lotus Root Turmeric Society, consists of a beer lover (myself), a highball enthusiast (my partner), and a sour drink fan (my friend). We all enjoyed our choices.
My partner, the highball lover, enjoyed the "Hokkaido Kiyosato potato highball (430 yen)" for its drinkability and natural sweetness. My friend and I, the sour drink fans, were impressed by the "Homemade plum wine soda (400 yen)" which had a unique deliciousness that even led us to eat the actual plum.
Lastly, I must mention the draft beer! Every time my partner ordered a refill, it was served in a frosty mug. I'm not sure if they freeze a considerable number of mugs or if there aren't many beer drinkers... By the third refill, the mug still had frost on it, but from the fourth refill onwards, the frost was gone, although the mug was still cold.
If I had to point out one thing, it would be that the service could use a little improvement. I'm not sure if it's a family-run business, but both the landlady and the two young female staff members in the hall lacked smiles... Not that they were unfriendly, but just the absence of smiles. It wouldn't bother me if I didn't pay attention, but I feel like the atmosphere of the place could be more pleasant with a few smiles added. (That's just my personal opinion, though, perhaps I'm being too nosy)... With that said, thank you for the meal! The overall satisfaction was above average.
