This izakaya is located about a 5-minute walk north from the west exit of JR Shinjuku Station. I visited to update my stamp on a smartphone app (lol). Since the app had changed, I needed to visit to update it, otherwise the previous information would disappear. I visited around 4:30 pm on a holiday, so I was able to enter without a reservation. As I was alone, I was seated at the counter, and upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted with a loud "Irasshaimase." I've been to another branch a few times before, but this was my first time at this one, and it had the same lively atmosphere. I ordered a "Premium Malt's Aroma Ale" (tax included 638 yen) first. A small glass and salted kombu cabbage were served across the counter. When I asked how big the glass was when ordering, they said "about 500ml," but it was definitely a mistake and closer to 350ml. The kombu cabbage was a standard appetizer and it's nice that it's free. Next, I ordered the "Assorted Oden" (tax included 528 yen) and the "Iron Pot Gyoza for 2" (tax included 638 yen). The oden arrived immediately after ordering. It included 6 items: Atsuage (thick fried tofu), hanpen (fish cake), chikuwa (tube-shaped fish cake), tamago (egg), daikon (radish), and mochi kinchaku (mochi-filled tofu pouch). The overall taste of the broth was a bit weak and disappointing. The daikon was not cooked enough and lacked flavor and tenderness, making convenience store oden seem better in comparison. However, the tamago was surprisingly delicious. The Iron Pot Gyoza took about 10 minutes to arrive. You must order a minimum of 2 servings, which makes sense considering the size of the iron pot. It had a thick skin, more crunchy than crispy, and the filling was flavorful. It would be better if the gyoza were larger with more filling, as it felt like you were mostly eating the skin when you eat a lot. While eating, I ordered the "Salt Lemon Sour in a Huge Glass" (tax included 418 yen, apparently a VIP member price). It arrived quickly in a large glass, but more than half of it was ice, so the quantity was not that much. It was quite salty, with the salt overpowering the lemon flavor. It was a bit too salty for my taste, so I decided to try the Sour Lemon next time. Overall, I enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the restaurant, but as a beer lover, the high price of beer and the fact that they only had Premium Malt's Aroma Ale, which is not my preference, was a drawback. If I were to drink at this restaurant again, I would go for a highball or lemon sour for better value. Nevertheless, I would like to visit this restaurant and its affiliated branches again. Perhaps next time, I'll visit during the birthday gyoza giveaway period (lol). Thank you for the meal.
