I came to Kyoto wearing a kimono. Today, I visited Gion after a long time. It seems that even at a later hour, the shops are still open and there are more people around. But wearing a kimono, I feel that the cold season is approaching. On nights like this, I crave warm food. In Gion, there is a restaurant called Jyuhdan-ya, which is said to be where Japanese shabu-shabu originated. The unique name of the restaurant comes from the first owner, Seinosuke, who was a Kabuki fan and his favorite play was "Chushingura," which has eleven acts. For tourists visiting Kyoto, the restaurant was named with the idea of "After watching Chushingura at the nearby Minami-za theater, enjoy a meal at Jyuhdan-ya." I just learned about this story for the first time (lol). Jyuhdan-ya has always been a place I admired because I love shabu-shabu. However, it is a bit high-end and the threshold is a bit high. But I heard that at the Hanamikoji store, you can enjoy shabu-shabu at a reasonable price even at night. The restaurant is located near the main store, facing Hanamikoji as the name suggests, with a large, elegant machiya building. When you open the sliding door and enter, you can smell the good aroma of the hot pot steam. The interior is calm with a folk art wooden framework. I sat at the table and, of course, ordered the shabu-shabu set meal, which costs 2,800 yen (including tax). Soon, it was brought to me on a tray - a small pot with tofu simmering and black-haired Wagyu sirloin marbled meat to dip in. When the color changes, dip it in sesame sauce and put it in your mouth - the meat is thick, soft, and melts in your mouth. The sesame sauce is made with deeply roasted sesame seeds, giving it a fragrant taste. It also has a slight spiciness from the chili pepper. The rice and pickles were also delicious, and my stomach was full. I was worried that the sesame sauce would run out, but the staff kindly reassured me, saying, "There is plenty of sauce, but if it runs out, we will refill it for you." (In reality, it was more than enough). The restaurant caught the attention of young female customers who came in one after another, and even though it is located right in the heart of Gion, it exudes a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere with the charm of a long-established restaurant.
