On Thursday at 18:30, I went to "Meijiya" in Tennoji. It opened in 1938 and has a retro Showa-era atmosphere. Due to redevelopment, it relocated but maintained the same interior and fixtures, making you feel like you've traveled back in time. I started with "kizushi" (550 yen) and "doteyaki" (400 yen). The "kizushi" soaked in soy sauce with daikon was delicious. The "doteyaki" was rich and sweet, perfect with sake. I also ordered "dashimaki" (250 yen) and "simmered sardines" (250 yen). The dashimaki had a strong dashi flavor and a chewy texture, while the simmered sardines had a gingery, rich taste. The dishes came out quickly, and the sake, like "Fukuda" (500 yen) and "Yamagata Masamune" (450 yen), were served hot and dry. The antique clock in the restaurant ticked away, reminding me of the importance of preserving this Japanese treasure. Thank you for the delicious meal.

I have been going to this place since before the days of Cue Mall being built. There was some development and relocation, but the atmosphere of the shops that have recreated the old days is just wonderful. It might feel a bit formal, but the traditional dishes are delicious with perfect flavors. You can't go wrong with their selection of sake, which is also abundant. Of course, I will visit again.

A very stylish retro Showa-era shop with a great atmosphere. The interior is off-limits for photography, so there are no pictures. The area around the counter exudes a sense of history. Did they bring it with them when they relocated? The counter table is spacious, and the spacing between seats is not cramped, making it a great spot for those who want to drink alone at a leisurely pace. The customers seem to be on the older side, maybe because it's a calm place to drink. Smokers will be pleased as smoking is allowed. I heard the food is delicious, but I only had one glass of sake and left, so I can't comment on the taste. The no photography rule didn't bother me, but the way it was communicated was a bit of a downer for me.

Kushikatsu Izakaya in Tennoji, a traditional restaurant that has been around for a long time. It is now located on the first floor of Q's Mall and continues to operate while maintaining the old atmosphere both inside and out. It is listed in Ota Kazuhiko's "Wandering Journey: Top 100 Izakayas". I finally visited this place as I have always wanted to go. - Hamo Otoshi Ume-Nikudare 450: A must-have in Osaka during the summer. Delicious! - Doteyaki: A classic izakaya dish. Sweet and flavorful miso! - Namabushi: Recommended by the landlady. A dish that lets you taste the freshness of bonito flakes. Goes really well with sake! I was impressed by the generosity of the restaurant. - Taruzake Atsukan: I usually have taruzake chilled, but this time I tried it warm. It transformed into a sake with a more pronounced barrel aroma. Truly a renowned establishment. I wish I could show you how amazing it was through photos, but please understand that this time I cannot.

I had a draft beer (530 yen), bonito sashimi (500 yen), sushi rolls (550 yen), shumai (350 yen), braised pork belly (400 yen), deep-fried young sardines (400 yen), cucumber and octopus vinegared dish (350 yen), boiled edamame (300 yen), mackerel roe (400 yen), and rolled omelette (300 yen). Although I couldn't take photos because it was not allowed, all the dishes were delicious and satisfying even in small portions. I ended up ordering quite a lot until I was full. The flavors were gentle and truly tasty. I would like to come back many times and try all the menu items. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I had some new government sake at the standing bar across the street, and when I came here for the second stop, they also had the No.6 R Type as a regular item. The hot tofu and shrimp dumplings were delicious too. It's impressive that there are two places in Abeno Walk that serve new government sake.

On the weekend, I went drinking in Tennoji. Today, I went drinking in Tennoji with my drinking buddies from Osaka! We started at "Stand Sonoda" for our first drink, then went to "Abeno Sakaba" for our second drink, and finally ended up at "Meijiya" for our third drink! This place has a nostalgic Showa era atmosphere since before they moved. We had Daikoku Masamune sake, and enjoyed dishes such as red snapper sashimi, simmered young burdock, hot tofu, and kizushi.

One of Japan's three major bars is currently operating inside a commercial facility, maintaining the atmosphere of the original location by moving everything as it was from Hiroshima to welcome Sen-chan who came all the way here. The second place chosen to entertain Sen-chan is this shop. Personally, it's my third visit in about 5 years, and it's a somewhat controversial and confusing shop. Looking at the menu... it seems that taking photos inside the shop is prohibited, which immediately lowers my excitement. *There was no such rule 5 years ago. *Let's eat and go. First, cheers! Hot sake - 370 yen per cup (tax included). *I asked if there were different brands available, but it seems there is only one. This shop was recently featured on a TV show called "Magic Restaurant" for its Showa retro-style hot sake machine. *Well, I don't really understand how it works, but it was brought to us. By the way, Sen-chan said the taste of the alcohol reminded him of a school festival. *It's good, a safe choice to stick with one cup. A little bit of food to go with the alcohol. Doteyaki - 450 yen (tax included) Spicy Nameko mushrooms - 200 yen (tax included) The food is delicious in my opinion. Doteyaki is thick and suits my taste. It's a place where you can sit comfortably, but there are no appetizers and it's a good place for those who want to keep their own pace. *By the way, the age group here is on the older side. Thank you for the meal. Side note 1: The table seats have integrated seats and tables. We sat at a 2-person table, which was as compact as a Shinkansen table. Side note 2: It was quite empty, so we were asked to move because we were sitting too close to the front. *The new seat was uncomfortably close to the neighboring customer. Side note 3: When the next customer arrived and wanted to see the menu, we noticed that there was only one copy. Sen-chan had to call the staff to hand over the menu. *There was a menu on the wall inside the restaurant. Side note 4: When taking orders, the staff immediately recommended the bonito sashimi as if assuming we would order it. I already knew that it was a leftover item. *Last time I visited, there was a second round of recommendations, which was unexpected. Side note 5: The customer who sat next to us started smoking, so we immediately left the shop. *The close proximity made it unbearable. Side note 6: If you like these old-fashioned public bars, then be sure to visit!

Kishidaya, Choukyu Sakaba, and Meijiya are known as the three great bars in Japan, and Meijiya stands out as the best. I first learned about the taste of Osaka's home cooking here, so I prefer Japanese cuisine over okonomiyaki and kushikatsu. Being in Kansai, Meijiya serves delicious dishes such as sword-shaped taro, kizushi (pickled mackerel), shumai, squid dumplings, dotenabe, and yudofu with gentle seasoning. Oh, how I miss Meijiya... Finally achieved the conquest of the three great bars!! Yay!

One of the three major izakayas in Japan. It seems to have relocated to its current location, on the first floor of a commercial facility called Abeno Walk. Photography is prohibited, so I will list the items ordered and their prices below. The restaurant has table seating, an L-shaped counter, and private rooms. The food menu is mainly Japanese, with a variety of sake available for drinks. The cozy atmosphere of this famous izakaya gives off a relaxing feeling similar to a hidden hot spring, making it perfect for solo drinking. However, there were more groups of 2-4 people at the table seats than I expected. Tuna kushikatsu 250 yen, onion and nanohana (rapeseed flower) 300 yen, slightly sweet oden with potatoes, konjac, and daikon, 130 yen each, delicious and gentle simmered dishes, 3 for 350 yen, yudofu (hot tofu) 350 yen, a recommended dish of the restaurant. The broth is delicious and it has a perfect touch of yuzu. Shrimp dumplings 400 yen, another recommended dish. Braised pork belly 400 yen for a small portion, 530 yen for a large portion, and 580 yen for a big bottle of sake, 460 yen for a small bottle. It was an extremely blissful time.

In the past, there was a shop in the shopping street of Abeno. I probably went there back when I worked nearby. The interior of the shop had a nostalgic Showa era vibe. The menu on the wall was very reasonable, with items like yellowtail sashimi for 450 yen. If you're dining alone, this is probably enough. The braised pork had little fat but was tender. The dumplings had the skin placed on top of the meat, which was a new experience for me. It's an old-fashioned drinking establishment with a wide variety of alcohol. I ordered some cloudy sake (Satoyama) after beer, and it was not cloudy at all. I didn't know what kind of sake it was, but it was delicious in its own way. I don't visit Tennoji often, but if I have the chance, I'll definitely come back.

Meiji-ya, the first time after relocation. I had never been there before the move, but the interior is very Showa era! It has a nostalgic feel. The dishes are all cheap, but the portions are on the smaller side. It's a good place to try a variety of dishes at a low cost if dining alone. If you eat a lot, it will end up being a normal price. The drinks are quite cheap, especially the sake which offers great value for money. I had potato salad, assorted sashimi, and dashimaki with a large bottle of beer. The potato salad had a homemade taste, but the portion was a bit small. The sashimi was thinly sliced. The dashimaki had too much starch (to prevent moisture loss) and was not to my liking. It's a good place for drinking with small dishes. The main customers seem to be elderly people.

Visited for the first time at around 14:50 on a Saturday in July 2022. "Meijiya" here is a long-established izakaya founded in 1936, one of the top izakayas in Osaka. When I entered, about 80-90% of the customers were there. There were seats available at the L-shaped counter, and I was guided to a seat near the center by the female owner. The menu is easy to read. It was a very hot day, so I felt like having beer rather than sake. I ordered a draft beer for 500 yen. For food, I ordered chilled tofu for 250 yen, shumai for 350 yen, and tuna skewers for 250 yen in order. First, I enjoyed the draft beer. It was delicious. The female owner in front of me also said, "It's delicious, right?" The chilled tofu was the perfect snack for a hot summer day with beer. The famous shumai was also delicious. I felt happy. The tuna skewers were average, but the beer went well with them. However, I had already had quite a bit to drink by this point, so I decided to end it here. It was a short stay of about 23 minutes, but I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of this long-established place. Thank you for the meal! I would like to stop by again sometime.

It was better than the last time I visited. (Last time, the restaurant was very quiet due to the pandemic.) This time, there was normal conversation and I could enjoy the atmosphere. The food was delicious, especially the edamame and takoyaki. The portion sizes were just right (small), and it was great to be able to order a variety of dishes. Thank you for the meal. ☺️

This was the main target restaurant for the Osaka drinking tour this time! It is said to be one of Japan's top three bars. The store opens at 1:00 PM, so we waited a bit in front of the store a little early. First, the curtain!! The word "sake" struck my heart. The interior of the store has been renovated, but the atmosphere is still alive. As soon as we entered the store and tried to take a photo of the recommended menu, we were warned by the mothers of the store! It was a surprise that photography was prohibited in the store. We toasted with bottled beer. It was KIRIN Lager. The menu is not very extensive, but it has a cool selection of dishes and the prices are quite reasonable. We ordered kizushi and dashimaki. The kizushi was much less sour than the shime saba in Kanto, making it very refreshing and easy to eat! It was the best. The dashimaki was juicy and the dashi was perfectly effective. It was so delicious that we ordered seconds! We also tried the new bamboo shoots simmered dish, which was also delicious! It's a real shame that photography was prohibited!! It will be etched in my heart.

This is said to be one of the top three izakayas in Japan. The other two are Kishidaya in Tsukiji and Chokyu in Shirahama. I have been to both of those, but unfortunately missed this one. There were about five women running the place. The menu is very appealing with a wide variety of options. Since I was just stopping by for a quick drink, I kept it light, but they have a great selection of sake and affordable dishes in a lovely atmosphere. The portions are just right and the flavors are delicious and comforting. Despite being located in a large commercial building, the restaurant has a traditional old-fashioned feel. It's truly impressive.

It seems like it's too late now, as there are no customers and it's completely empty. In the past, this famous restaurant used to be packed, but once customers leave, it's hard to bring them back. However, if they keep trying, I believe the day of revival will come again. #Abeno Ward #Abeno #Izakaya #Meijiya

In the midst of Abeno Q's Mall in Tennoji stands a unique shop that exudes a nostalgic atmosphere from the Showa era. It is the long-established casual izakaya "Meiji-ya," founded in 1936. Upon entering the shop, you can feel a sense of nostalgia in the air. With wooden counters, tables, and menu on the blackboard, it truly embodies the Showa era. This time, I ordered beer, oden, and dashimaki tamago, among other dishes. These are the kind of dishes that remind you of your mother's cooking. The flavors are gentle and comforting. The menu offers classic, reliable dishes in a nostalgic and cozy atmosphere. Photography inside the shop is prohibited, so I only managed to take a photo of the exterior. There were some customers who tried to take photos inside unconsciously, but they were politely declined. This shows that the shop maintains a sense of propriety. Whether dining alone or in a group, it is a welcoming place where regulars gather but newcomers are warmly received. If you're curious, I recommend giving it a try. Thank you for the meal.

I finished my business in Osaka. Even though it was in the opposite direction of my way home, I felt like stretching my back and having a drink, so I went to Meijiya in Tennoji, which is known as one of Japan's top three izakayas, for the first time in 25 years. I enjoyed two warm sake from the barrel and the famous shumai and yudofu! The warm sake is poured from a copper sake warmer into a glass tokkuri, giving it a charming touch. The shumai was delicious without a doubt. The yudofu, made with cotton tofu, oboro kelp, garnished with green onion and yuzu peel, paired well with the warm sake. It was my first visit since they moved, but the atmosphere of this long-established izakaya remains the same, with a sense of tradition. Drinking sake at the counter of such an izakaya, while stretching my back, brought back the feeling of being a grown-up from my younger days. It was a delicious drink that reminded me of those times, even as I enter middle age. Thank you for the meal.

I obtained permission to take photos in front of JR Tennoji Station before, but considering the regular customers, staff, and the atmosphere of the restaurant, I will respect the restaurant's request to refrain from taking photos and only focus on the exterior of the shop. I entered around 1 pm and the counter was full, with about 80% occupancy at the table seats. The average age seemed to be around 70, with senior customers leisurely enjoying their drinks. I started with a Kirin beer and then carefully selected two dishes from the menu, "Deep-fried sand lance" and "Amberjack sashimi." The counter had proper safety measures with acrylic boards on both sides, providing a sense of security. The dishes arrived just as my beer ran out, and I also ordered "Kamenoishi Junmai Ginjo sake from Saitama," which had a rich body and went well with the tempura. Next, I tried "Kikuhime Hiyaroshi from Ishikawa," which had unexpectedly great freshness and aroma, pairing perfectly with the refreshing amberjack sashimi. The occasional interactions and recommendations from the staff added a nice touch to the experience. I enjoyed my drinks and food thoroughly. This is how it should be at a long-established sake bar.

The conversation with the manager of the sake shop was lively, and it felt natural to hang out there. I settled at the counter, took a deep breath through my mask, and enjoyed the serene atmosphere of this long-established bar. I ordered a barrel sake and chose myouga amazu-zuke (pickled ginger) for 200 yen and anago tempura (conger eel tempura) recommended by the landlady for 500 yen. The leisurely flow of time in this space made me forget about the pandemic, with many elderly customers relaxing and enjoying themselves. I then ordered a chilled junmai sake from Tateyama-gawa and another dish, fuyu-kabu nabe (winter melon stew) for 250 yen, which was excellent. The rich and calming atmosphere of this long-established bar made me realize its greatness once again. I finished with a rock glass of their recommended sweet potato shochu. I truly felt that Meiji-ya is a magnificent drinking spot. I can't wait to go back as soon as the restrictions are lifted. *I received special permission to take photos.
