◉Genre: Japanese sweets ◉Area: Inside the main building of Iwataya Hakata store in Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City ◉Access: 3 minutes on foot from Tenjin Station on the Fukuoka City Subway ◉Parking: Not available (there is a partnership) ◉Credit card payment: Not available ◉Number of visits: First visit ◉Number of reviews: 1st review I visited "Toraya Iwataya Honten" on a whim on this day. ◇Exterior and Interior Located in the new building on the 2nd basement floor of the large department store Iwataya Honten in Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, this traditional Japanese confectionery shop is well-known for its name "Toraya" alone, almost as if it is ingrained in the DNA of the Japanese people. ◇Seating: Not available ◇Menu Structure When it comes to Toraya, one thinks of yokan (sweet bean jelly). In addition, they offer mochi, dried sweets, and most importantly... sweet bean paste! The items I ordered are as follows: - Small Yokan (292 yen) → Including tax When I visited Toraya and saw the summer yokan, it made me feel like it was really summer, but now, it seems like a thing of the distant past. (laughs) The small yokan comes in five flavors: honey, black sugar, red tea, matcha, etc. The packaging includes a summer-themed blue case, which also adds to the seasonal feel. A while ago, many traditional Japanese confectionery shops were selling products shaped like sweetfish, similar to this. Today, I chose the fresh green matcha flavor. When asked what I like about Toraya's yokan, I would say it's the texture. It's not unnecessarily smooth, nor does it have a texture that doesn't dissolve in your mouth. It has a natural texture that feels just right. The matcha flavor is not overpowering, but rather subtle, as if it's hiding in the background, or quietly standing by your side. It's a yokan that I can truly appreciate for its deliciousness. ◆Strong Point When it comes to yokan, Toraya is probably number one! ◆Customer Service Average ◆Conclusion I can almost hear someone shouting, "Review Kitakyushu before buying in Tenjin!"... but let's just ignore that. (laughs) I've been to Toraya in my local Kitakyushu many times. I just haven't reviewed it yet. (bitter smile) Thank you for the meal. ^ ^

I like red bean paste, so I went to Yasaka. It has 90kcal per piece. I ate it! Okay, time to sleep! The bad energy has been removed, thank you. When it comes to yokan, I always think that Toraya's red bean paste is really sweet. It's properly sweet. A sweetness that lingers. It feels like sweetness is justice, waving its sweetness around... It's like a violence of sweetness. This is top-notch Japanese confectionery. Toraya Iwataya Store 092-721-1111 2-5-35 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Iwataya Main Building B2F.

When you go to Iwataya underground, the shop that catches your eye is the Western confectionery shop, but for a few years now, I have been occasionally buying small packs of yokan that are slightly larger than bite-size and easy to eat at Toraya. This year, at the end of the year, I decided to try the larger yokan, which looked delicious. They also recently started offering half sizes, which are more affordable. This time, I bought the half size. I slowly enjoyed this year's "Tobizaru". I couldn't eat a lot at once, so I had them cut it into pieces about 5mm each. There are shops at Iwataya and Mitsukoshi. The noren at places like Tokyo Midtown are quite impressive! I also gave some as a souvenir to my parents' house for the New Year... Even though I'm not a fan of yokan or traditional Japanese sweets, I highly recommend Toraya's yokan. Please give it a try.
