I visited "Toraya Iwataya Honten" on a whim on this day.
◇Exterior and Interior
Located in the new building on the 2nd basement floor of the large department store Iwataya Honten in Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, this traditional Japanese confectionery shop is well-known for its name "Toraya" alone, almost as if it is ingrained in the DNA of the Japanese people.

◇Menu Structure
When it comes to Toraya, one thinks of yokan (sweet bean jelly). In addition, they offer mochi, dried sweets, and most importantly... sweet bean paste! The items I ordered are as follows:
- Small Yokan (292 yen) → Including tax
When I visited Toraya and saw the summer yokan, it made me feel like it was really summer, but now, it seems like a thing of the distant past. (laughs) The small yokan comes in five flavors: honey, black sugar, red tea, matcha, etc. The packaging includes a summer-themed blue case, which also adds to the seasonal feel. A while ago, many traditional Japanese confectionery shops were selling products shaped like sweetfish, similar to this. Today, I chose the fresh green matcha flavor. When asked what I like about Toraya's yokan, I would say it's the texture. It's not unnecessarily smooth, nor does it have a texture that doesn't dissolve in your mouth. It has a natural texture that feels just right. The matcha flavor is not overpowering, but rather subtle, as if it's hiding in the background, or quietly standing by your side. It's a yokan that I can truly appreciate for its deliciousness.
◆Strong Point
When it comes to yokan, Toraya is probably number one!

◆Conclusion
I can almost hear someone shouting, "Review Kitakyushu before buying in Tenjin!"... but let's just ignore that. (laughs) I've been to Toraya in my local Kitakyushu many times. I just haven't reviewed it yet. (bitter smile) Thank you for the meal. ^ ^
