Tsukigase has branches in Takashimaya and Gion, but the main store is located in Sakaimachi. It's a bit hidden away, so you might miss it if you don't know about it. However, once you step inside Tsukigase, you'll be greeted by a high ceiling, bright and quiet atmosphere that feels really nice. The customers seem to be mostly regulars from the neighborhood, but even if you're not a local, you'll be warmly welcomed. I visited to try their dim sum, which requires a reservation. The difference between the mini dim sum (which you can order without a reservation) and the regular dim sum is that the latter comes with fish and egg, and offers a wider selection of desserts. The dishes were beautifully arranged, with freshly grilled fish and fluffy egg that made me crave for some sake. For dessert, I had a tough time deciding but ended up choosing the Shiratama (with extra) Tsuki no Anmitsu. Tsukigase is famous for its anmitsu, and I can see why. The agar in the anmitsu was so smooth and melty, and the anko and mitsumame were elegant. I couldn't help but think if I've ever had such high-quality anmitsu before. The service was very friendly and the customers were mostly calm and composed (although I did notice a few things that made me opt for a masked dining experience). If I lived nearby, I would definitely be a regular at this place. The Azuki Zenzai is also outstanding, but the anmitsu is truly a top-notch delicacy.

I visited in the early afternoon on a weekday. The restaurant had about 10 seats and was half full. The agar jelly was soft and refreshing, and I finished it quickly. You can also exchange it for matcha syrup for 100 yen. The shaved ice that the person next to me was eating also looked delicious, haha.

I visited for the first time! While traveling, I wanted to eat something sweet, so I looked it up on Tabelog and visited this place. It's located deep in an alley, and it's a quiet and calming shop. The staff were all very friendly and I had a pleasant time. I ordered both the matcha anmitsu and vanilla anmitsu, which were highly rated in the reviews. Both were delicious with the agar jelly. The combination of agar jelly, ice cream, and sweet red bean paste was amazing. Thank you for the meal.

I arrived at "Tsukigase" located just a few minutes walk from Karasuma Oike Station. It's a bit hidden, so I almost missed it. I entered around 13:30 on a weekday. The high ceiling made the place feel surprisingly spacious. Local customers were relaxing there. The menu offers a wide range of options from meals to sweets. After some deliberation, I chose... ▪️Tsukigase Matcha Parfait (¥1,250). They even served tea in a teapot, which was a nice touch on such a hot day. The parfait arrived promptly. It was a perfect size, not too big. It had Yatsuhashi on top, giving it a Kyoto vibe! The cinnamon flavor paired well with everything. The shiratama was chewy and the agar was delicious. With agar, matcha ice cream, anko, shiratama, and Yatsuhashi, this parfait had a variety of textures to enjoy! While I was taking photos, the staff kindly made sure not to get in the way (sorry about that). I was impressed by their attention to detail. It was a great way to cool down in hot Kyoto. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal! ※Payment by card

This was my first time visiting Tsukigase. While the awa zenzai also caught my attention, this time I couldn't resist the limited-time cherry blossom matcha cream anmitsu. The atmosphere inside the shop was calm and quiet. The anmitsu that came out was cute in appearance, with toppings such as agar jelly, matcha ice cream, red beans, banana, strawberry, rice cake, chewy mochi, salted cherry leaves, and cherry blossom paste. It was topped with lightly sweet white syrup. Every bite from start to finish was delicious. The mild sweetness of the white syrup complemented each component perfectly. They also serve tea in a teapot. I will definitely come back next time to try the awa zenzai.

I used to go to a nice traditional townhouse restaurant in Shijo Kawaramachi since I was a child, but after a long time, I visited for the first time in over 10 years. This relatively new restaurant was my first visit. I had my favorite sweet red bean soup. It had been a while, but it tasted just like before and I enjoyed it. The smooth red bean paste was very good. The atmosphere might have changed, but the restaurant in Shijo Kawaramachi was really great.

One of the greatest pleasures when visiting Kyoto is going on a tour of sweet shops. Among them, the anmitsu at Mitsubachi is, in my opinion, the best in Japan in terms of quality. While you can enjoy famous sweets from all over the country in Tokyo, the quality of sweet shops in Kyoto is truly exceptional. However, lately it seems like Mitsubachi is the only option, so I decided to explore other shops this time. After leaving the Gion Manju factory, I took the subway at Higashiyama Sanjo Station and got off at Shiyakusho-mae Station. The Sakaimachi branch of Murasakino Wakuden, my next destination, was already closed. But no worries, there was another shop nearby that I wanted to try. I arrived at the shop just 10 minutes before closing time, but I decided to ask if they were still open, and luckily they were. This was a place I had been curious about for a while but never had the chance to visit until now. After contemplating the menu, I was torn between the seasonal limited edition "Awagenzai" and the "Chestnut Zenzai," but since I was in the mood for zenzai, I stuck to my original choice and ordered the "Chestnut Zenzai." When the long-awaited dish arrived, the chestnuts were standing tall. It was sweet but not sticky, a truly sophisticated zenzai. The chestnuts had a rich and flavorful taste. The combination of red beans and chestnuts can be likened to a top duo in the world of sweets. The mochi was crispy and fragrant, soft and irresistible. The kelp served as a palate cleanser was also delicious. The roasted green tea was refreshing and rich, simply delicious. Truly exceptional. And to think that I could enjoy all this for free. I left the shop completely satisfied, but it was just too amazing. I definitely plan to revisit next month when I go back to Kyoto. I want to try the anmitsu as well, but I also want to have zenzai and visit every day for a week. I'm already struggling with the choices.

Located a 5-7 minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station, you'll find the popular dessert shop Tsukigase Sakaimachi branch. Despite being a bit hidden in a small alley, this shop tends to have lines even on weekdays by early afternoon. The shop is small, and the service may take some time, so it's best to aim for less crowded hours. This time, I ordered the popular Tsukigase Matcha Parfait. This parfait is packed with traditional Japanese elements like red bean paste, agar jelly, shiratama mochi, matcha ice cream, and kinako (roasted soybean flour). It has a unique flavor with a hint of cinnamon, creating a well-balanced mix of the gentle sweetness of red bean paste and the slightly bitter taste of matcha. It's an easy-to-eat Japanese-style parfait! In addition to Japanese sweets, they also offer lunch menu items like obanzai (traditional Kyoto side dishes), making it a versatile spot for various occasions. Be sure to visit and enjoy! Bon appétit!

Today, I stopped by a traditional Japanese sweets shop near Karasuma Oike called Tsukigase. Established in the first year of the Showa era, this shop is known for its popular dishes like anmitsu and zenzai. Tsukigase has three locations in Kyoto, and the Sakaimachi branch where I visited is located just off Oike Street on Sakaimachi Street. The interior is modern with tables and chairs, and jazz music plays in the background creating a relaxed atmosphere. Looking at the menu, they offer various types of anmitsu including matcha and ice cream variations, as well as parfaits and "mitsumame." The staff recommended their signature dish, Tsukigase Anmitsu, which is a traditional dish with agar jelly, sweet red bean paste, red peas, mochi, and cherries topped with plenty of black syrup. The combination of the cold agar jelly and sweet toppings was delightful, and the chewy mochi added a nice texture. The smooth red bean paste paired well with the agar jelly, making it a delicious treat. I enjoyed the dish with a pot of green tea, and the generous portion of agar jelly left me feeling satisfied. It was a perfect dessert after a meal. Additionally, they offer takeout options for items like anmitsu and shiratama zenzai at a more affordable price than dining in.

Saturday 13:06 Sakaimachi Branch of Tsukigase One group of customers arrived before us. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is calm. We visited after lunch. Tsukigase Matcha Parfait 1,100 yen, and Mini Oshiruko Set 1,250 yen for me. My daughter ordered at 13:18. She was quite indecisive and ended up choosing a set where she could try two different items. This place seems to be a paradise for lovers of Japanese sweets. The staff kindly explained various things when we asked. Both items were shared and we were both very satisfied. The parfait had ice cream, sweet red bean paste, agar jelly, and other ingredients, making it enjoyable. Lately, I don't eat a lot of sweets, so my daughter ate most of it... There seems to be a parking space in front of the restaurant, as the customers who arrived later asked the staff and parked there. We had a table by the window, so having a quiet tea time was very pleasant. I don't come to this area often, so I had bookmarked this place for a long time, but I'm glad I finally came. I will visit again. Thank you for the meal.

Visited on a Saturday during opening hours. There were 4 other groups that arrived one after another right away. We entered and sat at an available table. We placed our order at the table, and then settled the bill at the counter after finishing our meal. This time, we came for the Matcha Awazenjai (1,200 yen). When it was served, the staff warned us that it was hot, as it was piping hot, so we didn't take too many photos. It had a rich and sticky matcha paste with chewy pieces of mochi. There was also some kelp tsukudani for a palate cleanser. It was delicious and we finished it in no time. The tea served was enough for 2-3 cups as well!

In Kyoto, there is a famous sweet shop called "Tsukigase." It is known for its delicious anmitsu and zenzai. In addition to the Sakaimachi store we visited, there are also stores in Gion and Kyoto Takashimaya. Tsukigase Sakaimachi store is located along Karasuma Street, a little down Sakaimachi Street. The shop is on the first floor of a building, slightly to the left from the street. Although the overall design is simple, there is a traditional Japanese atmosphere with noren curtains and potted plants. When we visited, it was close to closing time at 5 pm, so there were hardly any customers, and we were able to sit at a spacious table. The menu at Tsukigase Sakaimachi store offers a variety of items such as year-round anmitsu and sweet beans, as well as winter limited-time azuki zenzai. You can also order drinks as a set, and there are other set menus and special offers available. I ordered the azuki zenzai (1100 yen), which is a seasonal item. It was served in a white bowl with a lid, and there was a piece of kombu seaweed on the side. When I opened the lid, I found steamed millet inside with plenty of sweet red bean paste on top. The red bean paste was hot and sweet, while the millet was chewy and had a unique flavor. It was a delicious zenzai with an elegant and glossy appearance, which I enjoyed slowly with a slightly bitter green tea. In conclusion, the azuki zenzai was so delicious that I would like to have it again next winter. I plan to visit the Gion store as well, as I expect it to offer a different kind of goodness.

Long, long ago, in ancient times, "millet" was a staple food for farmers, but now it has been elevated to a superfood. I tried a warm zenzai made with millet, and it was surprisingly delicious! It's similar to ohagi, but even tastier. I must go back and have it again soon!

After lunch, I wasn't really in the mood for shaved ice, but I wanted some tea and happened to pass by this place without knowing that Tsukigase was there. I decided to go in. The atmosphere inside was calm, and perhaps because it was a weekday afternoon, the age group was a bit older (lol). I debated between anmitsu and shaved ice, but ended up choosing the black honey shaved ice. I added vanilla ice cream and red bean paste as toppings, and it came with white balls and black sugar jelly. It was my first time adding red bean paste to shaved ice, but it went really well with the black honey shaved ice. The black sugar jelly and white balls were delicious, and it was nice that the white balls were served separately. I would like to come back again next year.

This is a dessert shop located in the Karasuma-Oike area. It is a well-established store with roots dating back to 1924. I visited around 4 pm on a Sunday and was able to get in without waiting in line. I tried the Tsukigase Mitsumame (¥850). The agar jelly was delicious, with a delicate texture that melts in your mouth. However, I found the red bean paste to be mediocre. It was a moist paste, but I prefer a chunkier paste with a stronger red bean flavor. The sweetness was also quite strong, overpowering the black syrup. I would have preferred a less sweet option. Overall, it wasn't really to my liking. However, the agar jelly was really delicious, so I would like to try the Mitsumame next time. Thank you for the meal.

I came to Kyoto after a long time. Whenever I come to Kyoto, I always want to visit Tsukigase here. It's located between Karasuma and Kawaramachi, a little off Sanjo Street. There is a sweets shop where the entrance is not facing the street, so it's a bit hard to find and feels like a shop known only to locals, which is nice because it's not too crowded. I also go during weekday afternoons, so I've never had to wait or been turned away. I was tempted by the shaved ice, but I thought it would be too cold, so I chose the cream anmitsu instead. It comes with banana, vanilla ice cream, cherries, mochi, agar jelly, and sweet red bean paste. The presentation is perfect! I start with the vanilla ice cream because it melts, but even when it melts, it's still delicious. The sweetness of the black syrup is not too heavy, it's refreshing and I always end up finishing it in no time. They also offer various options like adding shiratama or extra ice cream, typical of a sweets shop. They will be serving shaved ice until the end of this month. Tsukigase also has a branch in a department store, but the relaxed atmosphere of this shop always makes me feel at ease... I'll definitely come back! Thank you for the meal.

I went to Kyoto Zoo and felt like having shaved ice, so I took a bus to go. I wanted to go to Isehan in Demachiyanagi, but I couldn't remember the name for some reason, and when I searched for it, it didn't come up, so I looked for a different shop. I found two locations for Tsukigase, and I chose this one because I thought the Gion store might be too crowded. The shop is located next to a parking lot of an apartment building along the street, and I entered the shop after passing by it a little. The interior of the shop is not very spacious, with one group of customers already there. I was seated at a table across from them, considering the current situation with COVID, and the door at the entrance was left open, letting in a nice breeze. It feels comfortable. I don't like shaved ice when it's too cold, so it's nice that the air conditioning isn't too strong. I ordered Uji Kinmokusei without hesitation. My partner ordered matcha. A tall shaved ice dessert arrived. Uji Kinmokusei comes with three shiratama balls on the side to prevent them from getting too hard. Uji flavor is delicious, but the syrup is a bit too sweet. The sweet red beans are just right and tasty, but I personally prefer them to be inside the ice as well. The presentation is beautiful with attention to detail. The plates with ice, plates with shiratama, serving tray, teapot, and coaster for the teapot are all lovely. The tea is also delicious. The pattern on the plates and coasters match. Each item is carefully arranged, and the staff is polite, which is very appealing. Ah, I feel refreshed now. Thank you for the meal. Thank you.

Taking a break at Tsukigase in Sakaimachi Street. Tried the Cream Shiratama Mitsumame (1100 yen)♪ You can choose between vanilla or matcha ice cream. Opted for "matcha" to keep it Kyoto-style. The Mitsumame looks like a jewel box. It's filled with plenty of fruits like pineapple, mandarin, and banana♪ Topped with rich black honey, it's delicious♪ Felt like experiencing an early summer in Kyoto♪
