(Recorded on June 30, 2021) On a holiday in late May, I decided to extend my trip to Monbetsu from Abashiri where I had been staying. For lunch, I chose a seafood restaurant near Monbetsu that seemed to have a good reputation. The exterior of the restaurant is shown here. It is located a bit off the main road, so it can be a little tricky to find. Despite it being a holiday, when we arrived around 1:30 pm, the restaurant was not crowded. The interior of the restaurant mainly consists of 4-seater tables, with some additional 4-seater booths. There is also a counter seat area, which seems more peaceful for smaller groups. As for the menu, seafood dishes are the highlight. Among the many rice bowl options, I came across a limited quantity dish called "Monbetsu-style drift ice special rice bowl" featuring crab, scallops, and salmon roe. However, what caught my eye the most was the "Snow Crab Special Rice Bowl (2530 yen)" among various rice bowl options. It was clearly a generous serving with a large amount of crab meat, including 2 claws and 2 cleaned legs, truly a special treat. Although it was double the price of a regular snow crab rice bowl priced around 1300 yen, I decided to give it a try. My companion ordered the "Snow Crab and Salmon Roe Rice Bowl (1540 yen)" and we also added the "Grilled Atka Mackerel (270 yen)". After a wait of about 10 minutes, our dishes arrived. The moment the rice bowls were served, we were overwhelmed by the generous portions. Here is the "Snow Crab Special Rice Bowl". In addition to the rice bowl, it came with wasabi, pickled squid, and crab miso soup as side dishes. The snow crab special rice bowl itself looked like a mobile suit from Gundam, with an impressive amount of crab meat. The sheer quantity of crab meat made it difficult to reach the rice underneath. If you didn't eat carefully, a crab meat avalanche could occur due to the overwhelming amount of crab meat. It seemed like there were about 3 cans of crab meat that you would commonly see in a supermarket. The taste was also remarkable, without the typical watery texture or bland flavor of thawed crab meat. It had a good balance of saltiness and the distinctive flavor of crab. The salmon roe topping was also flavorful, with a nice texture and rich taste that made you want to keep eating. Here is the "Snow Crab and Salmon Roe Rice Bowl". This rice bowl also had a generous amount of crab meat and salmon roe spread on top, with the crab meat seeming more voluminous. We also ordered the "Grilled Atka Mackerel". The ample-sized mackerel, about 20 centimeters long, was juicy and perfectly fried. The flavorful mackerel and the light saltiness balanced well, refreshing the palate after the rich flavors of the crab and salmon roe. The restaurant offers high-quality seafood rice bowls at relatively reasonable prices, and it seems that the management is related to a seafood processing company. Previously, it operated under the name "Matsumoto Shoten," which explains the quality. There is also a space in the restaurant where crab and other items are sold as souvenirs, so you can buy some to take home after enjoying a delicious rice bowl.
