I came here while sightseeing in Shimizu and stumbled upon it. The cafe on the second floor is spacious and not crowded, a hidden gem. I had pilaf and mitarashi dango. The pilaf had a gentle homemade flavor and was delicious, and the mitarashi dango was generous in portion and tasty! I will buy some souvenirs before leaving.

There are so many flavors of uirou that it's difficult for me, a sweet tooth, to choose which one to get. I was tempted by the mitarashi dango and warabi mochi flavors as well. However, since it was my first time trying uirou from Kyoto, I decided to go with the "shiro" (white) flavor. When I got home, I cut it into the thickness I wanted (3cm x 2 pieces) and had a bite with green tea. So sweet!! It's the sweetest uirou I've ever had among all the ones I've tried. Is Goken Uiro the sweetest in the uirou industry? The texture is good and it tastes delicious, but it's just so sweet! Maybe it's because I ate it at room temperature right after returning from Kyoto. It might calm down if I chill it in the fridge, so the next morning, I cut the chilled uirou into 3cm thickness again and had a bite. Even when chilled, it's still so sweet! It might be because of the 3cm thickness... From the next day onwards, I cut it into 0.5cm thickness and enjoyed it little by little.

I love the mitarashi dango from my favorite Japanese sweets shop. It's so big, yet has a chewy texture and the sauce is not too overpowering. I could easily eat 100 of these. Normally, I have to go to the main store in Kyoto to buy them, but in July, they had a limited-time pop-up shop at Seibu Ikebukuro, so I was able to get them there. They also have limited pop-up shops at places like Odakyu and Ginza, and I always make sure to buy some when they do. It's so delicious!

I tried a different traditional Japanese sweet at a Kyoto store called Goen Uiro. The Daigyu Mitarashi was delicious with its large and chewy texture. The Warabi Mochi had a smooth and bouncy texture, served with kinako powder on the side. I definitely want to try their signature Uiro next time.

This place itself is so nostalgic ⭐️ The middle school I used to attend seems to be gone now ⤵⤵... During this season, I always crave uiro ❤️ It's so soft and gooey (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) Delicious ✨ Also, the black sugar uiro is amazing❕❕❕ The chestnut yokan was a bit different than I expected... Is it less sweet!? Thank you for the meal (^人^)

Living in Kyoto, I realized that I haven't actually tried many traditional Kyoto sweets. This "Goken Uiro" might be one of them. I bought the "Nama Uiro" which comes in five flavors: red bean, black sugar, chestnut red bean, matcha red bean, and black bean. Overall, I found them to be quite sweet. I know there is a similar sweet called "Minazuki" which also features red bean on top of Uiro. But compared to other shops, this Uiro seems to be on the sweeter side. I also noticed that they sell "Minazuki" at this shop, so I wonder how it differs from the red bean Uiro. It's starting to get confusing...

The "Oodama Mitarashi" is a giant Mitarashi dango that is incredibly soft and chewy. It has a unique texture and is very delicious. The "Warabi mochi" is a jelly-like mochi that you can cut into your preferred size and sprinkle with kinako powder. It has a refreshing taste and a lingering aftertaste that is addictive.

The other day, I saw these skewers at a department store and said I would buy them next time I saw them. And sure enough, I found them at Isetan Shinjuku the other day. Each skewer is as big as a seasoned egg. You get three skewers per order, and I bought two orders. They are huge! I also bought some traditional Japanese sweets, and when I wondered if I could finish them all, my friend said, "I want you to praise me for not buying three skewers." What a feast! Each skewer is equivalent to three regular ones. The texture is like a bigger version of regular skewers, so you have to stuff your mouth full. I felt like a glutton. Well, I guess I was a glutton. The taste of the skewers is very standard, for better or for worse.

Purchased at a department store popup shop (March 2023, Urawa Isetan B1F). I was approached and told that it's only available during this season, so I decided to buy it. It's called "domyoji" not sakuramochi. The balance of saltiness and sweet red bean paste was delicious! The elegant sweetness of the three-color uiro. It looks cute too! The chewy large dango with a unique mitarashi flavor. I'm not a big fan of mitarashi, but this one was quite to my liking. It had a mild taste with a slightly sweet soy sauce flavor. It was very easy to eat, more on the sweet side like a sweetened soy sauce. (I apologize for my lack of expressive skills...) Thank you for the meal!

After shopping, I found a special event at the Matsuya department store basement! At Goken Uiro Honpo, I tried their large-sized Mitarashi dango with a gentle sweetness and chewy texture. The dango had a satisfying Kyoto-style texture with a delicious sweet potato starch filling. I also bought their first-ever Kyoto-style warabi mochi with fresh fu and yomogi. The mochi was soft and moist, with a guilt-free taste of traditional Japanese sweets. Today's dessert after dinner was a comforting Japanese sweet. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, there is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop. The shop has a historical feel to it, and there is a cafe on the second floor. I bought white and brown sugar flavored uiro. It wasn't exceptionally delicious, but it wasn't bad either. Uiros are just uiros. The advantage is that you can buy them in Kyoto, not just in Nagoya.

The food at the Mitsukoshi pop-up in Ginza was delicious, so I wanted to visit the main store as well. The atmosphere of the store was calm and I couldn't imagine the long lines at Mitsukoshi. Along with the large mitarashi dango and nama-fu manju I was looking for, I also tried the uiro made with wheat gluten. The mitarashi dango I ate in the car on the way back was delicious. I want to eat more in the future! It was delicious, thank you for the meal!

"Go Ken Uiro" is a specialty store for "uiro" located in Gojo, founded in the second year of Ansei (1855) with a traditional recipe passed down through generations. The store has a dignified, old-fashioned appearance, with a display of delicious Japanese sweets inside. They offer various sizes, including easy-to-eat stick types such as the classic "azuki bean," "matcha," "white," "black sugar," "chestnut azuki bean," "matcha azuki bean," and "black bean." I purchased the chestnut azuki bean (194 yen). It has a chewy texture, a gentle sweetness that is soothing. The chestnut and azuki bean are soft and create a perfect harmony. I would love to try other flavors as well.

After checking in and resting in the hotel room for a while, I met up with a friend at Shimizu Gojo Station and headed to Famille de Tchie Harise. I bought some baked goods there. Since we had a hearty breakfast earlier, we decided to enjoy a cafe and shopping instead of having lunch. I had checked some shops in Shimizu Gojo in advance, but many were closed for the Golden Week holidays. So, we ended up choosing this place without any prior research. It was a spacious cafe with seats available right away. The first floor was for buying sweets, while the second floor was the seating area. The menu was extensive with various sweets, tea, and even light meals like udon and sandwiches. We ordered a tea and sweets set. I'm not a fan of traditional Japanese sweets like uiro and yokan, so I opted for a Japanese-style cookie sandwich with cream. The matcha had a strong aroma and bitterness, and the thick sandwich cookie was as expected. After this, we decided to visit a shop in Miyagawa-cho and left the cafe. It was a pleasant experience!

I visited Uiro Uiro main store. I went to the cafe on the 2nd floor after a long time. It was lunchtime, so there were quite a few customers. I ordered a hot lemon tea and an iced lemonade. The taste was average. Payment was cash only, and although the menu stated 450 yen, I was told the iced lemonade was 500 yen and paid accordingly. I didn't receive a receipt, and the menu didn't list prices, which left a bad impression. I decided to buy some sweets from the store downstairs. Uiro - 194 yen (tax included) for 3 pieces, Chagayaki - 184 yen (tax included) for 2 pieces, Akamochi - 184 yen (tax included) for 2 pieces. Again, I didn't receive a receipt. There was no price listed for the uiro. What's going on? It's a shame because the uiro is delicious. I'll buy it from Isetan next time.

Located a 3-5 minute walk from Shimizu Gojo Station is the popular Japanese confectionery store Goken Uiro Main Store. Known for their delicious uiro and mitarashi dango, this shop also has a cozy cafe space on the second floor where you can relax and enjoy your treats. The atmosphere is spacious and welcoming, with friendly service that makes you want to buy lots of sweets. I ordered the popular jumbo mitarashi dango, which was surprisingly soft and chewy, with a rich and thick honey sauce coating it perfectly. The size of the dango allows for just the right amount of sauce, so you can fully enjoy the texture and flavor of the mochi. If you're looking for a Japanese confectionery shop around Shimizu Gojo, I highly recommend visiting this place. Bon appétit!

Uiro Goken in Kyoto✨ Enjoyed a large mitarashi dango and a uiro with fresh fu inside as a snack✔ Established in the second year of Ansei, this long-standing shop is known for its delicious uiro✔ The dango was light and fluffy. The uiro with fresh fu inside had a wonderfully chewy texture, even more so than regular uiro. I would love to eat this again. It's great that you can enjoy the taste of Kyoto even without traveling there. I love visiting events and pop-up shops like this shop( ´艸`) By the way, "uiro" is written as "外郎" in kanji. Why such complicated characters...

On the way to Tohuku-ji Temple, I suddenly spotted a tempting bun-like treat. It seemed to be a special stall by Goken-san. The steam rising from it was inviting, so I couldn't resist and bought one right away. My buddy, who was with me that day, mentioned that they had tried it before and found it nostalgic. This made me even more excited to try it. The warm bun had a piece of chestnut on top, and inside was red bean paste mixed with rice. The combination of carbohydrates was surprisingly delicious. It filled a little bit of my stomach and we headed to Tohuku-ji Temple to enjoy the autumn leaves.
