Unagi no Juuyoshi in Shingu: On the day of the Ox in midsummer... Saturday is the day of the Ox in midsummer, so I decided to visit Unagi no Juuyoshi in Shingu (although personally I don't really care about that). This is a newly opened restaurant known for its generous portion of eel. I started with a cold beer. The menu offers half a portion of eel for 1848 yen, and a whole eel for 2838 yen. I opted for the half portion. I expected it to be small, but to my surprise, it was huge and thick. They also offer free extra rice. I ordered the grilled eel on its own for 2750 yen. This size seems to be the standard. The eel had a nice glaze and thickness. It came with wasabi, green onions, seaweed, and sauce. Overall, while I wished for a softer texture, the cost performance was great. I recommend this place for those who want to eat a lot of eel.

I visited a new eel restaurant that opened in my usual area. It used to be an izakaya before. The restaurant serves eel dishes at night, along with izakaya menu, but during the day it seems to only offer eel rice bowls. The restaurant was empty when I went, and I was seated at the counter near the entrance, instead of the private room in the back. I could see into the kitchen through a gap in the curtain in front of the counter. I watched as they grilled the eel on a net that sandwiched the eel between the top and bottom. However, when the eel rice bowl was served, it looked very delicious but lacked the crispy grilled texture and aroma. The eel was very soft but lacked the satisfying crispiness. The gelatinous texture near the skin was also too soft, making it feel like a slightly higher quality supermarket eel. It wasn't bad, but considering the price, there are other places where you can get tastier eel for a better value. The eel rice bowl came with two pieces of yellow pickled radish, green onions, and chopped seaweed as condiments, which was a bit unusual for eel dishes. Perhaps it was meant to be like unadon? The pickled radish was the typical cheap yellow kind, without any special twist, which was a bit disappointing. I regret not going to Takemarutei next to the McDonald's on Route 3, where I could have had a better experience. I wanted to share my personal opinion to help others avoid similar regrets.

This is a restaurant that opened near the Shitafu intersection along Route 496. On this day, my wife and I had a day off together, so we decided to have lunch here in Shingu. The restaurant has private rooms, a counter, and even a spacious tatami seating area at the back. Although it was just the two of us, we were seated in the tatami area for lunch. We both ordered the Unagi (eel) rice bowl. After a while, our order of two Unagi rice bowls for a total of 2838 yen arrived. The Unagi was steamed once at high temperature and then grilled over charcoal, making it tender and delicious. The meal came with condiments and soup. You can also get a free extra serving of rice or a refill. The restaurant is located on the first floor of Shingu Plaza. Unagi no Ju Yoshi Address: 3-1-1 Misaki, Shingu-cho, Kasuya-gun, Fukuoka Phone: 092-405-0656 Business Hours: 11:00-14:00, 17:00-21:00 (Please note that prices, business hours, and holidays are based on the time of visit, so please confirm with the store before visiting.)

I thought there might be less because it was half portion, but it was just right. The soup didn't have liver in it, maybe because it was a half portion. But at this price, it's excellent.
