This is a road trip to the eastern part of Hokkaido. We are heading from Sapporo with the aim of visiting mixed-gender outdoor hot springs at Kotan Onsen and Karamatsu no Yu, and if possible, the day trip to the Riverside outdoor hot spring at Yunomoto Daiichi. This time, our accommodation is at Oshidori at Kawayu Onsen. The exterior looks a bit old, but the entrance has been renovated with a modern dark color tone. A staff member guided us from the parking lot to the room. Once in the room, our attendant brought us a welcome manju (steamed bun) and tea. They explained the room, confirmed dinner time, and discussed breakfast time. We opted for in-room dining. Breakfast is served in a private room at the dining area. The room is spacious with a separate living room and bedroom. The door has soundproofing, but it is not completely soundproof, so you can hear conversations from neighboring rooms. Before dinner, we visited Kotan Onsen, a mixed-gender outdoor hot spring near a campsite, about a 20-minute drive away. Bathing naked is prohibited, so we wore bathing suits or towels. The hot spring has a unique smell similar to petroleum, but it was enjoyable. The dinner was traditional hot spring cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. The crab was frozen, but the sashimi was fresh. While not the most delicious meal, it was satisfying. The hot spring water is colorless, odorless, and slightly slimy. The outdoor bath blends well with the natural surroundings. The water temperature was perfect for a long soak. The bedding was comfortable, and we had a good night's sleep. For breakfast, we chose grilled fish, either hokke or herring. It was a traditional Japanese meal that was enjoyable. The rice was a bit disappointing, but overall, we left the table satisfied. It's rare to stay in the Kawayu area, with many inns closed, so it's impressive that Oshidori has managed to survive and renovate its rooms for a comfortable stay. Hopefully, it will continue to be a good inn in the future.
