I visited this restaurant, which has been in business for about 80 years, located along Kiyamachi Street, which runs north to south through the city like the Kamo River. I made a reservation in advance and arrived at 7:00 pm on a weekday. The exterior has a traditional Kyoto-style appearance, and the first floor of the restaurant has counter seats, tables in the back, and sunken table seats, creating a calm atmosphere. The third-generation female owner seemed to be managing the place with the help of a male student-looking part-time staff, indicating a possible shortage of staff. This restaurant only serves bottled beer, so we started with a toast with beer and ordered a variety of dishes: a selection of 5 obanzai dishes, assorted sashimi, shirako tempura, fresh yuba spring rolls, grilled mackerel with miso, duck and kujo green onion hot pot, okara, a salad of chrysanthemum greens and nameko mushrooms with sesame dressing, assorted pickles, and grilled rice balls as a finale. For drinks, we had sake after the beer, enjoying local sake brands such as "Kyoto no Haru," "Tokujirou," and "Nobutoshi" served warm. The highlights were the fresh yuba spring rolls and the seasonal specialty duck and kujo green onion hot pot. The spring rolls had a crispy texture from the fried yuba skin, complemented by the savory pork and crunchy bamboo shoots. The duck and kujo green onion hot pot had a sweet soy sauce-based broth that paired well with the tender duck and crispy fresh kujo green onions, providing a comforting warmth. The total bill for two people came to slightly over 20,000 yen, which seemed reasonable considering the location, atmosphere, quality of food, and the fact that the restaurant caters to tourists as well. I also appreciated the attention to detail in the tableware and sake vessels. When I asked the female owner about the restaurant's name, she explained that it was named after her grandmother, who was the founder and had the name "Nami." They added the honorific "me" to create the name "Menami." Without going into detail, I learned that this restaurant was founded by the mother of a certain Kondo, making it a well-known longstanding establishment in Kyoto. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience.
