Adjacent to Hakata Station, "KITTE Hakata" opened on October 4th in the underground area, commonly known as "Umaito," a sushi izakaya originating from Osaka. This is the second branch in Fukuoka following the popular one in Tenjin, although I have not visited the latter due to the inability to make reservations. Fortunately, I happened to pass by the restaurant and found a vacant seat at the counter, so I decided to have dinner alone. The restaurant offers both counter and table seating, and I felt comfortable dining alone as there were other solo female customers as well.
Upon being seated, I was served "gari" (pickled ginger) which is complimentary and refillable. I ordered a regular lemon sour drink (319 yen including tax), which was light and easy to drink. Since there were no assorted sushi options available, I chose the "Honmaguro Sanmai" (572 yen including tax) and "Ebi Sanmai" (638 yen including tax) which each consisted of three types of sushi. Each piece of sushi had a slightly larger portion of rice seasoned with vinegar.
The "Honmaguro Sanmai" included akami (lean tuna), chu-toro (medium fatty tuna), and marinated tuna. The appearance was appealing and the chu-toro had a refined fattiness that was delicious, along with the other two pieces. The "Ebi Sanmai" featured amaebi (sweet shrimp), akami ebi (red shrimp), and botan ebi (botan shrimp), with the shrimp heads served as deep-fried. The botan ebi was particularly enjoyable for me.
I also ordered the "Shirako Tempura" (550 yen including tax) without realizing it was actually made from tuna milt until after ordering. The batter was well-seasoned, but the texture of the shirako was firmer than expected, which was not quite to my liking.
Overall, the tuna sushi was surprisingly delicious, and although I wished there were more variety in the sushi selection, the 6 pieces along with the tempura left me satisfied. If there were an option for an 8-piece assortment, it would be more convenient for solo diners. With a variety of appetizers available as well, I believe this restaurant is suitable for those looking for a casual sushi dining experience. The convenient location next to Hakata Station and the reasonable prices make it a place I would consider visiting again. The total bill, including drinks, came to 2,079 yen (tax included, credit cards accepted), and a detailed receipt was provided at the time of payment.
