After enjoying matcha dishes in Uji, we visited the tea specialty store "Sanshoen Kamirinzan Main Store" in Omotesando. It was a hot day, so I ordered the Uji Kinsho. It was labeled as the original Uji Kinsho. My wife ordered the matcha parfait. There were several irori (traditional Japanese sunken hearth) in the back of the tea shop, surrounded by seats. Most of the customers were foreigners. After a while, the Uji Kinsho arrived. It consisted of shaved ice topped with ice cream, red beans, and a generous amount of vibrant green matcha. They use premium Uji matcha that costs 80,000 yen per kilogram (I found out later on Tabelog). The matcha was indeed rich and flavorful, but the shaved ice was not the fine, fluffy texture I expected. It was more like roughly crushed ice, literally "shaved ice." They may intentionally use this traditional rough texture, but personally, I prefer shaved ice that is fine and melts gently in the mouth. The matcha and hojicha were delicious, but in terms of shaved ice, it was slightly disappointing. Nevertheless, we were able to sit and relax in the heat. Thank you for the meal.

Special matcha set with tea dumplings. You can choose from various types of matcha such as premium and top grade. The price of the set varies depending on the matcha chosen. The matcha is bitter yet has a refreshing aftertaste, with a subtle tea aroma and richness slowly coming through. It's very calming. The tea dumplings are coated with matcha mixed with coarse sugar, giving a chewy texture and interesting crunch. The aroma is delightful. There is also a course where you can experience grinding tea leaves, which caught the interest of inbound customers trying their hand at using the stone mill. Nearby, I enjoyed the aroma of tea wafting through the air. It's heartwarming and invigorating. This shop, located on the approach to Byodoin Temple, has a traditional atmosphere. Thank you for the delicious meal.

Today, taking advantage of the quiet period after Golden Week, three of us men visited the World Heritage Site Byodoin Temple and Ujigami Shrine in Uji. We were blessed with clear skies, and after touring Ujigami Shrine and Byodoin Temple, we were quite exhausted. We thought about taking a coffee break, but Uji is famous for its tea. Surrounded by matcha tea shops, we had no choice but to enter one. I tried the "Cold Matcha Zenzai for 990 yen," but the matcha was too high-class for me to appreciate its quality. Quite embarrassing! Thank you for the meal♪♪♪

A tea house along the approach to the Byodoin Temple in Uji, which is a designated tea house for the Shogun family. I tried the matcha warabi mochi and shiratama at this sweet shop, so I decided to stop by. I ordered a set of shiratama with matcha and a set of warabi mochi with matcha. The matcha comes in different grades, ranging from regular to about three levels higher, with the price increasing accordingly. I was told that the higher-priced matcha is sweeter, so I ordered the regular (lowest grade) and one level up. Even the lowest grade matcha was delicious. However, the higher grade one was noticeably sweeter. My elementary school-aged child loved the sweeter matcha and drank it all. Of course, the shiratama and warabi mochi were delicious as well, and I bought some warabi mochi as a souvenir. The staff at this shop, including a young boy, provided excellent service and explanations that were on par with those of adults. Their storytelling skills were so impressive that I wondered if he would become a storyteller in the future.

I once talked with my coworkers about how delicious Uji hojicha is. On our way back from visiting Byodoin Temple, we passed by a tea shop where a machine was roasting hojicha, creating a wonderful aroma. We decided to take a look and found out that it was the oldest tea shop in Uji, serving tea to the shogun family. The shopkeeper mentioned that "the tea drunk by Sen no Rikyu is our tea." We ended up buying a bag of freshly roasted hojicha. When we brewed the tea with plenty of leaves, it had a deliciously nutty flavor. It was easy to drink and very tasty. Hojicha is definitely a good choice.

After visiting the shrine in Uji and enjoying the scenery, it was around 5:00 PM and I couldn't find any shops open for a break. Thankfully, a shop owner kindly invited me in. I compared the offerings of matcha between the regular and the premium, and found that the regular one had a richer aroma and flavor. So, I recommend pairing it with sweet treats like zenzai. The premium one has a refreshing aftertaste, so it's a good choice for those who don't like bitterness!

This is the oldest tea shop in Japan. The 16th generation owner gave us detailed explanations. We tried their recommended set of high-quality matcha and sweet red bean soup. The sweet red bean soup was delicious, and the matcha had a deep flavor with a balance of bitterness and sweetness that paired perfectly with the red bean soup.

This year's first visit to a shrine was in Uji, and I was led to this shop while enjoying the sightseeing at Byodoin Temple. This was my first time trying matcha, so my taste review may not be helpful. I often order matcha desserts and drinks like coffee, so I was already interested and my wish came true. This shop has a calming atmosphere with a traditional Japanese exterior and interior. You can also see the matcha-making machine, making it visually enjoyable, and there are opportunities for matcha-making experiences and other fun activities. - Ordered the Top Grade Matcha Warabi Mochi Set for 1540 yen. Since it was a special occasion, the price was high, but I tried the top-grade matcha. I had the preconception that high-grade matcha would be bitter before tasting it. In reality, it was not bitter at all. It was smooth with fine foam. It paired perfectly with the matcha warabi mochi. I look forward to trying different types of matcha in the future to learn more about the taste.

After enjoying the beautiful Byodo-in Temple in Uji, I stumbled upon a restaurant with its lights on at 5:20 PM! Of course, I went in. I had already made a reservation for New Year's Eve soba for dinner... Here, I enjoyed some sweets - ice cream sandwich and a special treat. They were so delicious! I couldn't be happier on this New Year's Eve. 3.57 stars out of 133 reviews.

I visited the sweet shop "Sansuien Kamibayashi Sannyu Honten" located in Uji City, which is home to various world cultural heritage sites and cafes. The shop has been featured in many media outlets and is described on its website as a historic establishment with a legacy dating back to the Tensho era, serving as the official tea supplier to the shogunate family. The shop is located about a 10-minute walk from Uji Station, which is accessible via the Keihan Uji Line and JR Nara Line. The shop's sign also bears the inscription "Official Supplier to the Shogunate Family." The interior is warm and inviting, with abundant use of wooden materials. In addition to regular table seating, there are also traditional sunken hearth table seats, adding to the nostalgic ambiance. Old wooden tea boxes are displayed throughout the shop. Visitors can learn about the history of tea and even participate in making matcha. Today, I tried the following menu items: - Warabi mochi: A delightfully chewy warabi mochi with a great texture and delicious matcha flavor. - Kenjo Hatsukashi (limited quantity): This dish has a wonderful aroma and a deep, sweet taste that is truly delicious. I would definitely like to visit again in the future. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Matcha can be chosen from two types. The price varies. I chose the more expensive matcha (forgot the name) and it had a creamy taste without the typical bitter flavor of matcha. The warabi mochi was also easy to eat with a mild sweetness. The entrance of the shop and the inside were crowded with tourists (including myself, haha), which made it a bit hectic. There are many tea shops in Uji, so it might be fun to try different ones and find your favorite.

After seeing the Byodoin Temple, which is depicted on the 10 yen coin, I headed back to the approach to visit another World Heritage site, Uji Shrine. There are many tea houses along the way, so I decided to take a break at one of them. The entrance area was for selling tea and other items, while the seating area for dining was further inside. The tables were arranged around a sunken hearth, giving it a cozy atmosphere that seemed appealing to foreigners. In fact, there were foreign customers and the staff were Western men. Since I wasn't hungry, I just ordered matcha tea. I didn't know much about it, but I chose the one with "most superior" in its name. The matcha was served in a black bowl and looked very vibrant green. I took a sip of the roasted green tea that came with it before savoring the matcha. Hmm, it had a smooth bitterness, or should I say, not sweet at all. Is this really how it's supposed to taste? Maybe I've only had sweetened matcha before. I started imagining how good it would be with shaved ice... But at 770 yen, you could have a set meal or two bowls of beef bowl instead. Whether it's worth that much is beyond the understanding of ordinary people, but I'm sure those who know would appreciate it.

Taking a break at a tea shop that has been around for 500 years in Uji, the holy land of matcha. Inside the shop, they grind tea using a stone mill, which is amazing. The hardcore Uji Kintoki has firm ice that crunches when you bite into it, just like it was in the past. The sweetness is also subtle. Since I'm here, I also ordered matcha. This will surely become popular. It was a perfect little break. Thank you for the meal ☆

I love matcha, so I stopped by on my way back from a nearby campsite ✩⡱ I checked in advance because I saw on Tabelog that pets are allowed. They confirmed that my small dog could come and be in a carrier. There were parking spaces for about 2 cars next to the shop, and when I looked around, the staff came out and guided me, which was very helpful. It was hot, so I ordered shaved ice ¨̮♡︎ Mmm! The matcha flavor was rich and delicious! The shiratama and red bean were also delicious. This is what I wanted to eat! The staff were all very kind and I was very satisfied. I will definitely come back.

A tea shop in Uji called Sanjoen Kamibayashi Sannyu Honten. There is a dining area in the back with tables around a hearth where we were served a special warabi mochi matcha set. The matcha had a strong bitterness and was very rich, although the taste was a bit hard to discern. The warabi mochi was average. This tea shop has a long history and offers experiences like making matcha, so if you're interested, be sure to check it out!

I visited around 13:50 on Sunday. I was able to purchase quickly. The green tea was very delicious, with a great aroma and taste, and a strong presence of caffeine. It dissolved cleanly in water without any lumps.

I visited the restaurant around 13:15 on Sunday. I was seated right away. - Assorted two flavors for 800 yen: The matcha ice cream was delicious, but it didn't have a very strong matcha flavor. I thought it might be better if it was vanilla ice cream with matcha or strong green tea on top. - Roasted green tea sherbet: Since it's sherbet, it's hard and difficult to eat with a thick wooden spoon. Also, tea leaves are left in the mouth. Besides the tea leaves, the white part tastes like a light condensed milk flavor, or maybe it's a sugar flavor.

This shop not only sells authentic Uji tea, but also offers a matcha making experience where you can learn about the taste and history of tea. Located a 10-minute walk from Kyoto/Saga JR Uji Station, it is inside the approach to Byodoin Temple. There is a parking lot near the south gate of Byodoin Temple. As a long-established shop with a tradition and history of being a tea master for the shogunate family, they do not have branches or sell in supermarkets or department stores, so you can only taste their tea here. During this visit, I tried their special Premium Sanshoen parfait. It uses high-quality Uji matcha ground in a stone mill, and is served with a rich matcha sauce. Pouring the sauce enhances the rich flavor. The tea that comes with it is warm, so drinking it after the cold parfait can warm you up a bit.

I went to Uji and felt like having tea somewhere, but I didn't know where to go. I ended up at this place because I suddenly decided to go out. It seems to be mainly a tea shop (dealing with tea leaves, matcha, etc.). There was a small sign for the tea room section in front of the store, saying that they have some light snacks. There was also a request to wear a mask, and since there was no one else there, I felt relieved. The summer limited ice menu is popular, but I ordered white dumplings and my friend ordered ice cream. The white dumplings were made after we ordered, slightly warm. The matcha was as expected from a tea shop. The ice cream was an old-fashioned type, quite different from what we are used to these days, so it felt a bit lacking. Hojicha was also included, but since I always compare it with my favorite place, I didn't end up buying any to take home. I checked their website later and found out that they are a long-established store with a history and tradition dating back to the Tensho era, serving as the official tea master for the shogun family. Thank you for the meal.
