As a fan of white rice, I always wanted to visit the famous restaurant, Gekotei, in Sakai. The master rice cooker, Mr. Murashima, is known for his incredibly delicious rice, and the restaurant was very popular as a casual dining spot. Unfortunately, he has retired now, and a major chain has taken over. However, a year ago, a Gekotei branch opened in Daimaru Shinsaibashi, and I finally had the chance to visit.
Gekotei at Daimaru Shinsaibashi offers a luxurious seasonal meal with a variety of dishes. The restaurant is located on the 10th floor of Daimaru Shinsaibashi. You can choose a main dish for your one soup and eight side dishes set meal. The options include fried dishes, sashimi, and fish that go well with rice.
I chose the Teriyaki Yellowtail Set Meal for 1,880 yen, which came with a variety of side dishes such as white radish kimpira, simmered burdock and fried tofu, salmon fry, sweet potato simmered in syrup, eggplant with minced meat sauce, spinach with sesame dressing, and rolled omelet. Each dish had a homemade taste and was very comforting.
The main dish, the teriyaki yellowtail, was thick and juicy, and very flavorful. The rice was perfectly cooked with a nice stickiness to it. Even though I planned to have seconds, I ended up getting full from the side dishes alone, which was a bit frustrating.
The service was excellent, with the staff being very cheerful and attentive. They promptly refilled my tea and paid attention to small details, creating a bright atmosphere in the restaurant.
I hope to visit the original Gekotei in Sakai someday and make sure to go on an empty stomach next time. Thank you for the delicious meal.
