I visited a highly rated motsunabe (tripe hot pot) restaurant in Kyoto. I had tried to visit a few times before, but failed each time. So, this time I made a reservation and planned my visit. They were open for dinner at 5 pm, 7:15 pm, and 9 pm with a rotation system. Due to the current self-restraint measures, they were only open at 5 pm and 7:15 pm. The restaurant is located in Pontocho and just the exterior gives off a Kyoto vibe. Upon entering, the first floor had counter seats and the second floor had table seats. To go upstairs, you had to take off your shoes and climb a wooden staircase, adding a nice touch of antiquity. The motsunabe was priced at 1500 yen per person. Considering the location and the ambiance of the restaurant, I thought it was reasonably priced. The motsunabe was made with white miso, not the soy sauce I had expected. The condiments included ground sesame, bonito flakes, shichimi pepper, Korean chili, and yuzu pepper. The ingredients included tripe, onions, garlic chives, watercress, burdock root, thick fried tofu, bean sprouts, cabbage, and more. The tripe was large, chewy, and had little odor, making it delicious! The broth was initially sweet and had a very light taste. I enjoyed it with the various condiments provided. I also tried the oboro tofu, which was sweet and rich, and the vinegar motsu, which was a spicy ponzu flavor that I personally didn't enjoy due to its odor. The restaurant also had a wide variety of shochu and sake. The staff were attentive and made the motsunabe from start to finish, which was reassuring. The service was excellent, and overall, I think it's a great restaurant. Thank you for the meal.
