This is Kyoto. In Kyoto, there is a shop located at the southwest corner of Kamigyo Ward, Horikawa Street and Shimotachiuri. My friend bought me Mizuki here for the Nagoshi-no-Harae. Mizuki comes in three varieties: white, matcha, and brown sugar. I asked if they also bought Kuriake-meshi, but they only bought Mizuki. Unfortunately. The Mizuki here has a slightly firm exterior, not as chewy as I would have liked, more solid than soft. The amount of red beans was just right though. Anyway, I guess the purification for the first half of this year is done.

Today is May 5th, Children's Day in Japan. I remembered seeing Kenji Moriwaki on TV eating red rice from this shop, so I came to buy kashiwa mochi. They offer kashiwa mochi with miso, smooth red bean paste, chunky red bean paste, and chunky red bean paste with mugwort. This time, I chose miso filling. It was delicious!

I like red rice and often buy it at convenience stores. However, this is a different kind... I purchased it at a nearby Isetan. It's been a while since I last ate it. I couldn't get a ticket at the previous Kyoto exhibition... so I couldn't buy it. When I tried it, it had a perfect texture and flavor, and I finished it in no time. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal. What I ate: Red rice 388 yen *Used a discount at Mitsukoshi Isetan

Chocolate Daifuku for 200 yen + consumption tax, Strawberry Daifuku (white bean paste) for 240 yen + consumption tax, Uguisu Mochi for 160 yen + consumption tax. Considering the price and taste, I think this is a very cost-effective shop. Any of the traditional Japanese sweets are delicious, and the red bean rice is also tasty.

I bought some cute Japanese sweets for Setsubun. I tried Otafuku-san (sweet bean paste) for 180 yen and Mameonikun (sweet bean paste) for 250 yen. Both were delicious. The mitarashi dango was 80 yen per stick. The strawberry daifuku comes in two types: with sweet red bean paste and with white bean paste. It's nice to have a choice depending on your mood. Both are delicious.

Daifuku with black beans is said to be available only in winter, so I decided to visit. The store looked quite large from the bus, and since they also have a branch at Takashimaya in Kyoto, I thought it might be a high-end shop. However, upon entering, I found that it had a rather down-to-earth atmosphere, with local customers constantly coming in to make purchases. The main products they sell are mochi-based sweets, with about 20 varieties including dango, uguisu mochi, and daifuku, all priced at 200 yen or less. Of course, they also had rice cake products. I couldn't find regular daifuku, but they had black bean daifuku. The texture is quite different between green peas and black beans, but oh well. Let's buy just one and have it in the eat-in corner. The eat-in corner is quite simple, with just a few sets of basic chairs and tables. Since it's an eat-in area, there is no self-service for tea. The old locals were drinking coffee and chatting, while a family with children was enjoying mitarashi dango. It's heartwarming to see the kids being so lively. The thin wooden knife they gave us, like the one that comes with ice cream, was a relief. The black bean daifuku cost 183 yen. The size is small. The skin is thin and firm, a sign of authentic mochi. I prefer it firm rather than too soft. The sweet red bean paste is on the sweeter side and smooth. The black beans are a bit on the dry side, as expected.

The shop opens early in the morning, which is convenient. I went to "Mochi wa Mochiya" to buy mochi. They are famous for their red rice and seasonal sweets, so you can't go wrong with any choice. You can even purchase Kyoto Maru Mochi through mail order. It is truly delicious mochi.

A 147-year-old mochi shop known for their red rice and traditional Japanese sweets. They accept cash, cards, electronic money, QR code payments, and also offer UberEATS delivery service. We visited on Friday morning at 9:30 am with two people. We initially planned to eat the red rice there, but ended up getting everything to go!
Items purchased:
- Persimmon (Japanese sweet) 183 yen
- Chestnut mochi 216 yen
- Chestnut ohagi 226 yen
- Red rice 432 yen
- Chestnut red rice 475 yen
- Mountain vegetable rice ball 410 yen
- Shirako mochi 97 yen x 4
- Bean mochi 85 yen x 3
We brought home the items made with Tanba chestnuts and traditional Japanese sweets. The red rice we were looking forward to was slightly warm when we bought it, but it seemed to shine even more when it cooled down! The plump and shiny mochi rice with large chestnuts made it very satisfying. The mochi was also used in the finishing porridge at a famous Kyoto restaurant, so we wanted to buy it from the main store and try baking it ourselves. The result was a finely textured and soft baked mochi that was amazing. We wished we had bought more mochi... The Japanese sweets were visually appealing and had an elegant sweetness. Especially the chestnut ohagi. The carefully filtered chestnut paste had a rich flavor and was delicious. We often see them in department stores, so we would like to purchase them there as well. We were glad to finally visit the main store this time. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Today, I went to the Nishijin area and visited the main store of Narumi Mochi. The store was established in the 8th year of the Meiji era and is a mochi shop located in Shimodachiuri. At this main store, you can enjoy red rice in the eat-in area. In addition, during the autumn season, they also offer red rice made with chestnuts. So, I decided to try the red rice in the eat-in area.
Chestnut Red Rice Set:
This set includes chestnut red rice, red miso soup, and Nara pickles. The chestnuts used in the red rice are from Tanba. The rice grains are large and have a chewy texture. The sweetness of the new chestnuts used in the rice is wonderful. The Nara pickles were strong in flavor, giving a nice contrast. I had some more tea and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. The portion was perfect for a snack. It's nice that you can enjoy it at an affordable price!

Today, I went to Nakihamochi Honten as per my mother-in-law's request. There was no line, but there were constantly people coming in to buy. I also bought chestnut steamed yokan and chestnut mochi. People in Kyoto seem to enjoy these autumn treats (unlike in Osaka where we don't really buy chestnut rice just because it's autumn). I had the chestnut steamed yokan as a snack, and it was delicious with a refined sweetness. I think I want to go buy chestnut red rice again.

Rumored red rice♪ I realized I may have never tried it before, so I got the limited edition chestnut red rice for this season. As expected, the customers were bustling in the morning looking for red rice. It was sold in unusual units like "1.5 go". I purchased 1.5 go. It had big chestnuts in it with a slightly bitter skin that added a nice aroma. The red rice was delicious as well! Although it's hard to go buy it often, I've decided to come back for more! The moon-viewing dumplings were also delicious. Thank you for the meal♡

After participating in the stamp rally at "Deaimon Stamp Rally," I had lunch. I ordered two red rice sets with Nara pickles. It was a heartwarming moment. "Itk-chan was so cute (lol)."

Elegant sweetness and refreshing taste that seems easy to drink, Narumi Mochi Honten (Japanese sweets, Nijo Castle). On the way back from the Tenjin-san on the 25th, I passed by Narumi Mochi Honten on Horikawa Street. In this season, of course... I was drawn in and entered the shop. It was in the evening, so the chestnut red rice I was looking for was sold out. Oh, it's popular after all. I didn't want to go home empty-handed, so I got a kinako and anko ohagi. It's just around the equinox, after all. I'll have it at home. This simplicity is nice. The anko is glossy. It's juicy and fresh. The sweetness is mild with a hint of saltiness, and it's very delicious. The mochi rice is still grainy but moist, and it goes down smoothly. I could eat as many as I want. It's more like something you can drink than eat, that's the kind of ohagi it was. Thank you for the meal. Next time, I definitely want to try the red rice.

I bought it at Shinjuku Takashimaya, the national famous confectionery section, where they were selling Kyoto air-freighted sweets on the same day. I purchased it around 7:00 p.m. on a Saturday. I had the chestnut red rice for 660 yen. The chewy and firm red rice was delicious. There were a decent amount of chestnuts, and they had a natural sweetness (not like candied chestnuts). Since it's not from a chestnut specialist, I didn't have high expectations, but I still felt a bit unsatisfied, so I thought maybe I should have just bought the red rice from the start. I would consider revisiting, but I'm not sure if I would buy the same thing again.

This shop is famous for its rice cakes and red rice. I made a reservation for just the red rice and took various items to go. The red rice is filled with plenty of Tanba Dainagon red beans, giving it a sweet and fluffy taste. The sticky rice is also delicious. It has an elegant and polite flavor. The red and white colors of the Red Rice Manju make it a festive dish. Both the skin of the steamed bun and the red rice are delicious. The dorayaki comes in two flavors, chestnut and sweet potato. The chestnut has large chestnuts and sweet bean paste that are delicious, while the sweet potato has a gentle and comforting taste with sweet potato and white bean paste. The dorayaki skin is also fluffy and moist. I recommend the chestnut red rice as well. Thank you for the delicious meal.

During my student days, I lived close by and they were my neighbors, but despite that, I never bought anything from this traditional Japanese sweets store and just went through my student days. Now, after several decades, they have a branch in the department store and this store is famous for its red rice. So, I decided to buy from the main store to reminisce about the past. The red rice and water-no-mizu red rice were perfect in color, stickiness of the rice, and the texture of the azuki beans. The water-no-mizu was made with white and black sugar bought from other stores, but it's something to enjoy in its simplicity. A casual and everyday use of a great store with understated customer service.

On the last day in Kyoto, I visited the main store to buy souvenirs. There are a couple of parking spaces next to the store. I bought 3 servings of red rice and 2 servings in the morning. We had it for dinner at home and it was very delicious. I would like to visit again during the chestnut season! I also discovered another delicious souvenir along with Ajari mochi.
