The streets of the ancient capital city are gradually becoming more impersonal, which makes me feel lonely. New buildings made of modern materials are standing out here and there in Kyoto. In this area, near Kyoto City Hall Station on the Tozai Subway Line, you can find the essence of Kyoto. Get off at the station and walk through the long underground shopping street. When you emerge at the desired exit, you will find yourself at the intersection of Imadegawa Street and Fuyacho Street, on the south side. The Higashiyama Ryokan and Tawaraya Ryokan face each other here. The name Fuyacho Street has such a lovely ring to it. I had a reservation for 7:30 pm. I walked further south along the darkened street, and after a few minutes, I saw a small floor lantern with the characters "Tenmoku." Ah, this is it! Oh my, the entrance looks like the home of a calligraphy master. I walked down a small path towards the back. The entrance door creaked open, and there was an elevator. Suddenly, I was back in the Reiwa era. I was guided to the counter seats on the second floor. There were ten seats arranged in an L-shape around the frying area. It was very spacious. Oh my, except for one straw seat, the place was fully booked. Half of the customers were foreigners. It's Kyoto, after all. The menu here only offers set courses. There are appetizers, tempura, and a tempura main course. As it is a tempura restaurant, I ordered the tempura main course. I started with a highball for my drink. The first dish was sesame tofu. It had a rich sesame aroma and a smooth texture from the kudzu starch. The tempura started with a tiny shrimp. It was like a peeled jumbo shrimp. Hmm, a bit disappointing. Next was green beans. The batter was slightly burnt in some places. Oh no, the mood started to feel a bit heavy. There was also a tomato-wrapped conger eel with shiso, raw wheat gluten, and another small shrimp. The chef explained that the shrimp was small tonight. Hmm, I don't think increasing the quantity is the solution. After that, there were corn, conger eel, and various other items, followed by a choice between tempura rice bowl or tempura tea, with pickled mountain pepper and white rice. I chose the tempura rice bowl with white rice. The atmosphere of the restaurant and the personality of the chef were very nice, and the view of the greenery through the front glass window from my seat was calming. However, the tempura itself was a bit underwhelming for the price. Still, I enjoyed the leisurely time spent in this nostalgic setting and felt glad to have visited. Thank you for the meal.
