Kaniya, which had been closed for a long time, underwent a renovation in April 2014 and reopened with a new interior. I'm not sure if the owner is the same as before, but I decided to try their lunch menu. The restaurant is located along Route 39, so it's relatively easy to find. However, the parking lot was a bit hard to locate. They offer dishes like Okhotsk Sea crab sashimi and scallops, as well as other lunch options. I can't remember the prices, but I ordered the crab sashimi during my visit. Other menu items include: Special Gomeshi Donburi for 960 yen, Special Crab Ramen for 1200 yen, Special Gomeshi Udon for 860 yen, Special Seafood Bowl for 2800 yen, and more. Many customers seemed to prefer ordering ramen over seafood dishes. Perhaps the ramen is more recommended than the seafood dishes!笑

During my trip in Hokkaido, I visited this restaurant for breakfast because my hotel didn't provide breakfast. I ordered the seafood bowl which had sashimi, sea urchin, and salmon roe on top, all of which were fresh and delicious. The price was reasonable compared to the ones in town, but I wished there were more toppings to make it even more satisfying.

A store that also has a crab direct sales section. They offer seafood bowls, salmon roe bowls, and 3-meal bowls. I ordered a seafood bowl and a single item of hokke. The seafood bowl was delicious, but considering the thickness of the hokke and its fat content, the hokke took the prize.

This time in Hokkaido, we went to Mount Shari, and for the final lunch in Hokkaido, we ate at this restaurant in Abashiri. Hokkaido is known for its delicious food, but snow crab is quite expensive, so this time we decided to have a seafood bowl. It had sea urchin, shrimp, scallops, squid, crab meat, and salmon on top, with plenty of wasabi mixed with soy sauce to eat. This is my style. We also had jumbo crab dumplings. It was my first visit, but the food was delicious. Thank you for the meal. Thank you very much.

There are seafood bowls, seafood ramen, and other side dishes available. There are also many celebrity autographs. It is located across from Abashiri Prison, and it was impressive to see crab served on prison plates. There is a shop at the entrance where you can purchase crabs and other items.

Special seafood bowl + Large crab shumai + Sapporo Classic bottle 600 (It may be different from usual as it is during a tour bus journey). The taste was okay, not really impressive, more like for tourists. The amount of sea urchin was so little that it seemed like it was just there for show. Cash only.

I chose the seafood bowl. Unfortunately, all the dishes seemed to be pre-made, and the shumai was especially disappointing as it was cold and hard, not enjoyable to eat. The seafood bowl had soggy rice which ruined the sashimi. The miso soup was served hot, but the ingredients were cold so it quickly cooled down. Overall, it felt like the food was not freshly made. It might have been a different experience if it wasn't part of a tour.

I ordered the Special Seafood Bowl (2,800 yen) and Crab Shumai (300 yen). The Special Seafood Bowl had salmon, ikura, sea urchin, squid, scallops, shrimp, and crab on top. The amounts of ikura, sea urchin, and crab were just for show. This is a common thing with seafood bowls from Eastern Hokkaido, where the rice portion was also on the smaller side. The taste was average, not particularly outstanding. The rice was a bit mushy, and with the variety of ingredients, it was hard to distinguish the flavors. The Crab Shumai was also just okay. It was large, but at 300 yen per piece, it was quite expensive. Perhaps this place is more geared towards tourists? The staff were very friendly, so I'll give them a slightly higher rating.

The important mission of Abashiri is to send fresh seafood from the Okhotsk Sea as souvenirs to your home. Keeping that in mind, for breakfast at Gourmet Research Abashiri, at 8:30 am, there is "Okhotsk Direct Market Kaniya" in front of the prison. For breakfast, I had a salmon roe bowl and a Sapporo Classic. Looking around the store, there was plenty of seafood for souvenirs - lucky me! They also handle return gifts for hometown tax payments in Abashiri City. With that, I was able to get plenty of Okhotsk seafood! At this time of year, there are few options for shipping fresh products, so they were frozen. Snow crabs, salmon roe, scallops, Atka mackerel, Alfonsino, and more. The staff were all kind and friendly. With all that, I was able to find a wonderful breakfast and souvenirs.

I came for lunch because I wanted to eat crab. I had the small size of live hairy crab set meal for 6,800 yen. It was delicious, but I think the extra-large size is recommended even though it's more expensive! The golden eye snapper was also delicious with a perfect amount of fat! And the salted squid that came with the set meal was unexpectedly the most delicious I've ever had. I bought some as a souvenir right away! Thank you very much!

I ordered the special seafood bowl. The seafood bowl was delicious, but the rice portion was a bit small, which was disappointing. The famous shumai was warm and tasty. There were few people inside the restaurant, and the older men working there were chatting outside. The glasses had a slightly musty smell.

First visit. Only one local group was eating leisurely before us. The lady who seemed to be the owner and the man cooking in the back both casually chatted with us. The food was delicious and good value for money! The crab shumai was also fluffy and delicious!

I used this restaurant for lunch during my trip to Hokkaido. As a big fan of crab, I must say the hair crab was incredibly delicious...freshly boiled crab just tastes different from frozen! The crab meat was firm and juicy, with no watery or mushy texture, and it was sweet and delicious. The miso ramen topped with half a crab was also amazing, with rich miso broth and chewy noodles that would surely attract long lines if it were in Tokyo. It's probably a good thing that it's not so easy to visit this restaurant in the remote corner of Hokkaido, or else I might become a regular customer!

I wanted to have breakfast, so I came to this restaurant! The seafood bowl from the fish market. It's definitely delicious! Salmon, salmon roe, and scallops \(^o^)/ so tasty! I couldn't help but gobble it up (^_^;) There was also someone eating crab ramen, and I wanted to try that too (ᗒᗩᗕ) Looking forward to it again (^^)

On the second day of my visit on March 15, after checking out of the hotel, I had some time to kill before my afternoon visit. I decided to take a drive to a different area that I didn't visit yesterday. I ended up at a different roadside station, but unfortunately, the entrance to the park was closed and covered in snow. The park is closed until mid-May, so I had to change my plans. I then went to Cape Notsuke, where the temperature was 0 degrees Celsius, and it was extremely cold due to the strong wind. However, the view of the Okhotsk Sea in front of me was truly amazing.
Afterwards, I went back to the roadside station I visited yesterday to look for souvenirs. It was time for lunch, and although I had breakfast at the hotel, my junior colleague was already hungry as he usually doesn't eat breakfast. So, we decided to have lunch at a seafood restaurant called "Okhotsk Sanchoku Ichiba Kaniya." When in Hokkaido, seafood is a must, and my colleague was eager to try some sea urchin. However, to our disappointment, they were not serving sea urchin at the time as it is in season from June to August. I made a mistake not knowing the seasonality of sea urchin.
My colleague ordered the Special Seafood Bowl for 2,800 yen, while I ordered the Salmon Roe Bowl for 1,800 yen. We also added the "Jumbo Crab Shumai" from the coupon on Tabelog. The dishes arrived in about 5 minutes. My colleague's Special Seafood Bowl was impressive with plenty of fresh seafood including whole shrimp. He was satisfied with his choice. My Salmon Roe Bowl had a lot of delicious salmon roe, but half of it was seaweed. The salmon roe was tasty, but I realized it was not in season during this time. The Jumbo Crab Shumai was good, but it had a processed taste to it.
Overall, our visit during this season didn't allow us to fully enjoy the seafood, but I advised my colleague to visit again during the summer to autumn season. It was still a satisfying meal.

Visited in the morning on a day passing through Hokkaido. I walked from the hotel to the restaurant for some exercise. The "open" sign was not lit up, but when I entered, the staff kindly guided me. I chose the Special Seafood Bowl at Kaniya due to budget constraints. It arrived in about 10 minutes. The ingredients were sparkling, fresh, sweet, and had a perfect firmness. I also received a complimentary crab shumai with a coupon. It was different from regular shumai, with the skin wrapped around like a spring roll. It was quite filling for just one piece. I was expecting the miso soup to have a seafood flavor, but it didn't stand out. Hokkaido is known for its high-quality restaurants, and this one was no exception. However, it could be a bit more affordable considering the difficult access and limited variety of ingredients. Thank you for the meal.

Gourmet Trip Part 7 - Crossing Hokkaido (Shiretoko, where brown bears are common)
In the morning, I visited a restaurant near the Shiretoko area, close to the Memanbetsu Airport. The airport has limited flights, so I chose a morning arrival to have breakfast nearby. I went to this restaurant in Abashiri, right next to the airport. I ordered the Special Hairy Crab Ramen for 1,500 yen. There were other menu options like seafood bowls, but since I had plans to eat various seafood dishes later, I decided to go for something unique to Hokkaido. The ramen was basically miso ramen with boiled hairy crab on top. It was quite a sight, but also quite messy and challenging to eat since you had to pick the crab meat out yourself. The combination of ramen and difficult-to-eat ingredients was not the best. It was a big disappointment, as there wasn't much meat in the crab either. I felt like I paid a high price for a stressful meal. The only saving grace was that the miso ramen itself was tasty, although it didn't have a distinct Shiretoko flavor. It seemed like there was a hint of seafood broth in it. Maybe my brain was just playing tricks on me, trying to justify the experience. Overall, the restaurant seemed to cater to those who wanted to have seafood one last time before leaving the Memanbetsu Airport area.

On the way to Memanbetsu Airport, I was running and saying, "I haven't had sea urchin yet." At first, I went to the second floor of the large store next door, but they said they didn't have sea urchin in stock and only had crab tempura, which was disappointing. With the flight time approaching, I was debating whether to give up or not, and then I decided to try "Kaniya" here. They had sea urchin! But I was also interested in the hairy crab! I ordered both! I prefer steamed crab, but they recommended live hairy crab as it tastes completely different! I tried it! The smallest one (6500 yen) came with legs still moving! It was surprising! Gross! I couldn't watch! Raw hairy crab sashimi! However, it was delicious! Sweet! Rich! They also boiled the miso and finer parts for me. With little time left for the flight, I quickly put a few legs in a bag and rushed to pay. When I got into the rental car, the owner handed me a wet towel from the window to prevent injuring my hands (while eating the crab legs). Kind... The female staff was also kind. If they do things like this, I have to write about it. Of course, it was delicious. I'm not sure about the cost performance because I don't know the market price, but kindness is important, right?

If you go to the Okhotsk region, the seafood should be reasonably priced, right? But if you think it's like Sapporo's off-market prices, you'll get burned, haha. Is it worth it considering the freshness? Recommended seafood bowl. Actually, you have to try it if you're there. I'm not sure if it's fresh, but it's just a regular seafood bowl, haha.

On May 2, 2019, at lunchtime, be prepared for days like this when it's crowded. Waited in line for an hour before being seated on the second floor. Unfortunately, there was no staff present on the second floor, and my partner's order was forgotten, so they ended up missing out on their meal. The seafood bowl looked different from the menu photo, please refer to the image. The price was the same, but personally, I felt the freshness was lacking. Using this place during busy times can lead to unexpected situations! It became a memorable experience of our trip! LOL

Upon arrival at Memanbetsu Airport, I rented a car and headed to Abashiri for sightseeing. I visited Abashiri Station and the prison, and then went to the Okhotsk Direct Market Kaniyasan located in front of the current Abashiri Prison. The market has a clean and cozy atmosphere, and offers a variety of seafood dishes. I ordered the Special Seafood Bowl for 2800 yen, the Rausu Shiretoko Atka Mackerel Set Meal for 1800 yen, Steamed Oysters for 600 yen, and received complimentary Shumai. The Special Seafood Bowl was delicious, with fresh ingredients like salmon, sea urchin, and scallops. The Atka Mackerel in the set meal was very fresh and flavorful. The Oysters were cooked right in front of me and tasted creamy and delicious. The Shumai was generously sized and juicy. The wooden bowls used in the restaurant were made at the Abashiri Prison, adding a local touch to the dining experience. The staff were polite and attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant and would love to visit again in the future.
