On this day, I had some errands to run in Kyoto and decided to have lunch around Kyoto Station. As I was exploring options other than ramen, I came across this restaurant that caught my eye, so I decided to visit. It is located on the basement floor of the Westin Miyako Kyoto hotel on the south side of Kyoto Station. Being inside a top-class hotel, the luxury ambiance was undeniable. I felt a bit out of place, but I informed the reception that I didn't have a reservation and they kindly guided me to a table in the back. The atmosphere inside the restaurant made me feel even more out of place (laughs), and I was even given a transparent bag to store my mask. What a thoughtful gesture! I was handed the menu, but my order was already decided - the "Mapo Tofu Lunch" was my only choice. However, I decided to check out the recommended lunch options as well. Since I couldn't choose the Mapo Tofu I wanted, I stuck to my original order. I chose the spiciness level at the maximum of 4 and selected the "Stir-Fried Pork Fillet with Chili" as my side dish. It seems like I really enjoy spicy food (laughs). Additionally, I was informed that I would receive complimentary Oolong tea, and I was asked if I preferred it hot or cold. I chose cold. Looking at the other menu options, it was clear that this was a super high-end Chinese restaurant (laughs). The Mapo Tofu alone would cost over ¥2000 if ordered separately. While waiting, I observed the course meal of the person next to me, which seemed to be the recommended lunch set. If I wasn't set on the Mapo Tofu, I might have gone for that despite the higher price, as it seemed to offer a variety of dishes. The manager came over to greet me, and I initially thought they were being overly polite to a regular customer, but then I remembered where I had seen her before. She was a well-known gourmet writer. No wonder she was writing notes in a small notebook after each dish. That seems like quite a job. Finally, my order arrived. The first impression was that each dish was served in a cute size. It was just the right amount for me, but some might find it lacking. However, given the price at this restaurant, this portion size may be expected. Nevertheless, the quality was exceptional. First, I tasted the soup. Oh, I haven't had such delicious soup in a long time. The carefully crafted broth was amazing, and it was filled with plenty of crab. The consistency of the egg was also perfect. Next was the main dish, the Mapo Tofu. The spiciness level was not a problem for me, and it was incredibly delicious. The spiciness wasn't overpowering but rather mild and enjoyable. It's hard to describe, but I believe they used excellent spices. The miso added a fantastic richness to the dish, truly a flavorful Mapo Tofu. I really wanted a second helping of rice (laughs). Lastly, the side dish of Stir-Fried Pork Fillet with Chili was also delicious. It was a hit. Although the portion was a bit small (laughs), the tender pork, well-prepared vegetables, such as shishito peppers, eggplant, enoki mushrooms, and chili, were all cooked to perfection and matched perfectly with the sauce. I must mention the pickled mustard greens - I've mentioned before that I'm not a fan of them. However, the pickled mustard greens here were not only edible but actually delicious. I couldn't stop eating them. Why do the flavors of pickled mustard greens vary so much? That's something I've been wondering about lately (laughs). In conclusion, the total cost, including tax and service charge, was ¥1978, which is not cheap, but considering the quality, it's definitely worth it. However, I don't think it's a place you would go out of your way to visit just for a meal. Nevertheless, I was able to immerse myself in the satisfaction of the exceptional hospitality. Thank you for the wonderful meal. Based on a rating scale of 4.0, this is an overall evaluation including taste and service.
