I heard that there is a shop called vege eats in Sakaisuji Hommachi that uses hydroponically grown lettuce to make voluminous sandwiches. They offer a variety of sandwiches packed with vegetables, luxurious hot dog sandwiches, a salad bar with 20 different vegetables and ham, and even bento boxes for just one coin with 10 options! It's a perfect place to get your vegetable fix. The shop is located on the south side of Sakaisuji Hommachi in a simple building with a display of sandwich and bento box menus. As you enter, you'll find a salad bar corner right away, followed by a showcase of sandwiches and the cashier. It gets quite crowded around 12:30 on weekdays, showing its popularity. The voluminous sandwiches include options like Egg Sandwich (420 yen), Homemade Tuna Sandwich (420 yen), VEGE Sandwich (420 yen), Shrimp Fry with Special Egg Tartar (500 yen), Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich (540 yen), and B.L.T. Sandwich (540 yen). The hot dog sandwich options include B.L.T. Dog Sandwich (460 yen), Smoked Salmon (650 yen), Avocado Shrimp (650 yen), Ham and Mozzarella Cheese (650 yen), and Roast Beef (700 yen). They also offer hot menu items like Cheese Tortilla (250 yen), Keema Curry Cheese Tortilla (350 yen), Mortadella & Cheese Panini (420 yen), and Fresh Tomato Italian Panini (470 yen). Additionally, they have a salad bar (S: 500 yen, L: 800 yen), 6 types of chopped salads, homemade pudding, and scones. The bento boxes are very popular and tend to sell out by around 1 pm. They offer a variety of options including Hamburger Steak with Colorful Vegetables, Keema Curry, Omelette Rice & Shrimp Fry, as well as chilled options like Chilled Chinese Noodles & Inari Sushi. I decided to try the voluminous sandwich this time. You can add a cup salad and daily soup (consomme) for an additional 120 yen with any sandwich or bento box order. The sandwich was filled with plenty of vegetables and the one I chose was the Shrimp Fry with Special Egg Tartar for 500 yen. The sandwich was very thick with shrimp fry and special egg tartar on the top half, and a variety of vegetables packed below. The shrimp cutlet was large, but the shrimp flavor was subtle. The special tartar sauce with chunks of boiled eggs provided a satisfying texture. The coleslaw at the bottom added a refreshing touch. The bottom half was filled with crunchy vegetables like shredded carrots, purple cabbage, and fresh lettuce, along with ham and cheddar cheese. The sandwich was not only filled with vegetables but also had a good balance of saltiness and umami, making it a luxurious treat. The bread was slightly sweet with a good thickness, which held all the fillings well and was easy to eat. The sandwich was so packed with ingredients that it didn't feel like just one sandwich, providing a very filling meal. The voluminous sandwiches at this shop allow you to enjoy a wide variety of vegetables and main ingredients, all at a great value. I am already looking forward to trying the Egg Sandwich with chunky boiled eggs for 420 yen, the Homemade Tuna Sandwich for 420 yen, and the thick bacon B.L.T. Sandwich for 540 yen! Before they sell out, I recommend choosing a one-coin bento box and adding a cup salad and soup for a well-balanced meal. The shop also offers a spacious dining area at the back with bright lights illuminating the hydroponic lettuce growing area. They provide self-service water and 6 types of dressings for the salad bar and chopped salads. The voluminous sandwich I tried was amazing and I'll definitely be returning to this shop for more healthy and satisfying meals in the future. It was a delicious experience!
