A bakery located just east of Funayama Mountain in Anma-kuchi Street. It's a small shop that you might easily pass by. I happened to stop by just after lunch and couldn't resist asking for a recommendation. They had a variety of delicious deli-style breads, and I felt like buying them all because I was so hungry. I ended up buying an apple and chestnut French bread. It's rare to find sweet fillings in French bread. Thank you for the meal!

I purchased a Camembert cheese and roast ham sandwich for 350 yen and a lemon cream for 270 yen. The Camembert sandwich had olives inside which added a nice touch. The bread was just the right level of firmness. The lemon cream was not too sweet, making it easy to eat.

When I visited Funoka Onsen, I visited this bakery. The small shop had a variety of breads, making it hard to choose. All the breads were good, but the highlights were:
- Hot Dog: The sausage was delicious and the sauce was great.
- Cheese Croissant: The balance between the crispy texture and the cheese was perfect.
- Curry Bread: The crispy outer layer was excellent. Funoka Onsen has now become the "Golden Route of Bread".

Sausage croissant for 240 yen. When I visited, the food log rated it 3.55. There is no parking lot, and since it's in a back alley, there weren't many coin parking spots nearby. I was hoping to get a sandwich, but they were out, so that was disappointing. However, the sausage croissant was delicious.

The katsu sandwich is heavy with a ketchup and mayonnaise sauce. The curry bread has a crispy exterior and a filling of keema curry. Both are large in size and delicious. The cream pastries are not too sweet and easy to eat despite their size. The lemon cream is perfect for lemon cake lovers. The pain au chocolat has a bitter taste that I enjoy. The cream danish is just the right balance of lightness. The mini cupcakes and tea cookies have a homemade taste, although the mini cupcakes tasted a bit commercial, maybe due to the aluminum packaging. The cookies are crispy on the outside and moist inside. Overall, I will definitely come back for more bread.

Tom Sawyer Bakery is a popular bakery located a 20-25 minute walk from Kurama-kou Station. It is a cozy local bakery loved by the community. They open early in the morning, making it a perfect spot to grab breakfast. Since it's quite a distance from the station, taking a taxi if you're coming by subway might be more convenient. This time, I purchased their popular Vegetable Pizzetta. Topped with luxurious sausage, broccoli, bell peppers, and potatoes, the toppings were delicious. But what stood out the most was the sweet Bechamel sauce that tied everything together perfectly. The balance with the cheese and bread was impeccable, elevating the quality of the bread to the next level! They also had seasonal menu items like chestnut bread, so be sure to visit. Bon appétit!

After getting breakfast and sweets in Kitayama, I decided to stroll along Kuramaguchi Street today. I was lured by the delicious smell of bread and visited "Tom Sawyer," a familiar local bakery. I purchased their new products: yuzu bean paste bread, salted caramel chocolate, walnut chestnut, and apple rustic bread. The yuzu bean paste bread had plenty of filling with a thin crust and chewy texture, which was delicious. Before I knew it, there was a line forming. I'm glad I went early!

*An Butter France ¥200 *Mozzarella Pizza ¥190
I always buy An Butter when I find it at a bakery. The bread is hard and crunchy, perfect for those who like hard textures. It's crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, offering a variety of textures with each bite. I usually wouldn't eat solid butter on its own, but when it's in An Butter, I can enjoy it without feeling guilty. The Mozzarella Pizza had diced bacon, tomatoes, and basil on top. It would have been even more delicious if I had reheated it to melt the cheese, but I was too hungry and ate it as is. It was still delicious. The bakery is small, but they offer a wide variety of bread, and there were many other items I wanted to try. The prices are reasonable, which is a plus! ☺️

This is my favorite bakery. Everything they make is delicious, so I highly recommend it. There is always a steady stream of customers coming in from early in the morning. On this day, I had a large baguette sandwich filled with chicken steak and plenty of tartar sauce. I also tried a pizza-style bread, both of which were delicious. Although I didn't buy any that day, their curry bread is also very tasty.

Located at the foot of Mt. Funaokayama in Kyoto, there is a historic public bathhouse on Kurama-guchi Street. It is a small bakery, but it is packed with a variety of breads. It seems to be popular among locals and has become a bakery rooted in the community. I bought a Wiener Cheese France sandwich with a pizza-like bread, a fragrant Garlic France with garlic, and two croissants. I had them for breakfast the next morning. I warmed them up a bit, and the croissant had a crispy buttery aroma, the Garlic France was soft and fragrant, and the Wiener Cheese France with sausage was delicious. All of them were tasty. This bakery is so close by that I might become a regular customer. Thank you for the meal!

Bacon Epi: The dough filled with plenty of bacon is unique yet not too overpowering, making it delicious.
Chocolate Corone: A reliable tasty treat with a milky bread and a not overly sweet cream that go well together.
Chocolate Bagel: A cocoa-based bagel dough filled with plenty of chocolate chips.
Hard Toast: Another delicious item with a soft yet firm texture.
I love this shop, as always.

◎Panini Heaven! The combination of rich cheddar cheese and spicy mustard is a match made in bread heaven! ◎Whether it's the rich milk French bread or the simple custard, everything is delicious!! When you travel, you often come across unexpected encounters. Mr. Tom Sawyer here is one of those encounters. I stumbled upon this place during my trip to Kyoto. I decided to venture off the beaten path and ended up at Funaoke Onsen, a public bathhouse designated as an important cultural property. The onsen was truly a magnificent building with hinoki cypress baths and outdoor baths, all at a reasonable price for a local bathhouse experience (note: despite being called "onsen," it is a common practice in Kansai to use the term for public bathhouses, not natural hot springs). After a relaxing bath, I continued my stroll and stumbled upon a charming bakery. Intrigued by the delicious-looking pastries, I decided to step inside. The bread here was truly exceptional. ★Panini I don't usually eat paninis, but this one looked too good to resist. And my gut feeling was right. It was exquisite. The rich cheddar cheese paired with a generous amount of spicy mustard was perfectly balanced. The bread itself had a strong wheat flavor and a satisfying chewy texture. It was a delight. ・Milk French Bread The milk flavor was rich, like condensed milk, but not overly cloying. It had a satisfying sweetness that was simply delicious! The French bread was also excellent! ★Chocolate Danish The chocolate was high-quality, not your average bakery chocolate, with a rich cocoa content for a more adult taste. Yet, it was still sweet enough to be a pastry. The balance was exceptional. The crispy croissant dough added a delightful nutty aroma. ・Custard Pudding A small and cute pudding. Despite its size, it was a serious pudding with a strong eggy flavor. The caramel sauce had a strong bitterness, giving it an adult taste. The way it balanced the adult flavors with a childish sweetness was remarkable. Perhaps that's why it's called "Tom Sawyer" bakery...

Today, I visited a popular bakery in Kyoto's Kita-ku, located at Kenkon Shrine. Tom Sawyer is known for baking a variety of bread little by little, resembling a traditional French bakery. The bakery had a wide selection of bread, even though I visited during a slightly dark time of day. They also had seasonal baked goods like Christmas stollen made with dried fruits and nuts. I bought three types of bread: Petit Boule with ham and onion sandwich, An Butter France, and Chestnut Danish. The ham and onion sandwich was delicious with mayonnaise blending well with the bread. The An Butter France had sweet red bean paste and butter that melted together nicely. The Chestnut Danish had chestnuts with their skins on top, providing a crunchy and crispy texture. Overall, it was a delightful bakery experience, and I wish there was a bakery like this near me.

After dining at a nearby restaurant called Itou-san, I couldn't resist checking out another shop that I had saved. The small shop was filled with various tempting breads, which got me really excited! I decided to limit myself to buying only three items to avoid overindulging, but then I found myself struggling with the decision. I wandered around the cramped shop like an excited dog, unsure of what to choose. Eventually, I settled on three items, thinking I could always come back for more later. I bought an egg sandwich for 230 yen, a baked cheese curry bread for 330 yen, and a large peanut bread for 120 yen. Although I initially thought the curry bread was a bit pricey, it turned out to be incredibly delicious, showcasing the shop's high quality. The crunchy texture of the peanut cream was also excellent. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience!

Chocolate orange dice with plenty of chocolate, accented with orange, is lovely. Branches of edamame, bacon, and cheese make it luxurious. The apple chestnut with cinnamon aroma is delicious, with soft-cooked chestnuts. There is a slightly generous amount of mentaiko mayonnaise in the creamy filling.

Tom Sawyer loves hard toast! There was a delicious bread with chocolate dough and orange flavor that he received as a gift, but unfortunately he doesn't know the name of it. He forgot to take a picture of the plain bagel, made of wheat or other ingredients, with a soft and chewy texture that spreads sweetness in the mouth. It is delicious on its own. It has a similarity with hard toast, making it a great choice!

I visited this bakery on September 16, 2019. On this day, my wife and I went for a stroll up north in Kyoto under the theme of "Let's Walk Kyoto". We planned to visit places like Kenkun Shrine and Daitoku-ji Temple. Now, we visited this bakery first thing in the morning. I purchased four different types of bread: Hard Toast, Sweet Potato Black Sesame Bread, Burdock and Shiso Sesame Bread, and Croissant. Each bread was delicious with a perfect balance of flavors. The Hard Toast had a great aroma and texture, and paired well with jam, making it a good choice for breakfast. The Burdock and Shiso Sesame Bread had a wonderful texture and the flavor of shiso was a perfect match for the bread. I would love to try other varieties on my next visit. It was a delightful bakery experience.

Kyoto has a lot of bakeries, but there are not many that I repeat visit. Just a handful. Since there are many individually owned bakeries in Kyoto, there are a lot of unique bakeries (with extremely limited selection or quirky staff, haha). This bakery is one of the few that I find ideal and keep going back to. However, it's located far from the station, so I can't visit frequently, which is a shame. This was my third visit. I went on a calm, sunny Friday around noon, perfect for cherry blossom viewing. The weather must have been nice because the bread was selling out like crazy, even though it was only noon on a weekday. Here are the items I bought (prices excluding tax): Hot Dog - ¥300, Petit Boule Ham and Onion Sandwich - ¥160, Coconut Quignon Amand - ¥160 (a big hit!), Potato Butter Fougas - ¥140, Cranberry and Cream Cheese French Bread - ¥140, Sakura Anpan - ¥160, Salt Bread - ¥90. All the bread I bought this time was delicious! They are all reasonably priced, and Tom Sawyer is the best! Even though I want to shout out that this is my favorite bakery in Kyoto, I'm indecisive. But among the many bakeries in Kyoto, it's undeniable that this bakery is one of the few that I want to keep coming back to.

I stopped by this bakery on a whim and found that they have a wide variety of delicious bread. Despite the bad weather, I entered in the early afternoon and everything looked so tasty. The burdock bread is packed full of burdock, and I can't wait to try the other breads too! There are many expensive bakeries out there, but this one is highly recommended!
