This is an udon restaurant near Shimogamo Shrine. I visited during lunchtime and there was a line. They had child-sized chairs and dishes, which was convenient. The staff were friendly and polite. I ordered warm udon with sakura shrimp tempura. The udon came with sakura shrimp tempura, fried tofu, fish cake, and boiled egg. It was served with ginger and green onions as condiments. The broth was delicious! The udon was cooked perfectly and paired well with the broth. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal.

I visited the restaurant around 12pm on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. It was almost full, but I was seated at a counter seat that was available. I ordered zaru udon. Even though it was already the end of October, I wanted to eat warm/cold udon, so I chose this. I could choose either wasabi or ginger as a condiment, and I chose ginger. The udon was served in a few minutes, and it was beautifully handcrafted. It had a glossy appearance, similar to udon from Kagawa. It had a good texture and was delicious. The broth was Kansai-style, making it easy to eat. I could see why this place has a line outside. When I left the restaurant, there were already a few people in line.

You can enjoy delicious udon noodles here, both cold and hot versions are tasty at this restaurant. On this day, I had cold Niku Udon with tempura on top. The tempura was also excellent and delicious on its own. It had been a while since I last had it, but it was so delicious that I decided to visit again soon.

After visiting the serene Shimogamo Shrine near Kawai Shrine, we had lunch here. It was hot, so all three of us ordered bukkake udon. I had the bukkake udon with grated yam and a soft-boiled egg. The noodles, which are said to be imported from Kagawa, were chewy and had a nice texture, very delicious. The udon overall was good, but unfortunately, the service was disappointing as we had to wait outside despite the restaurant being empty and the water we were served was lukewarm.

Yesterday, I went to Bono-san on Shimogamo Hondori. I love curry udon, so I usually order curry udon. The udon was a medium-thick and chewy Sanuki udon, and the spicy curry paired perfectly with the broth. The crispy and juicy tempura chicken was delicious when dipped in the curry broth, and I enjoyed it with rice. Thank you for the meal.

The broth is delicious! I had the bukkake udon, so I couldn't really taste it, but when I tried my partner's, it was really delicious. Next time, I will try the warm udon. By the way, I had the kashiwa tempura with grated daikon bukkake. The kashiwa tempura was large and satisfying to eat. The udon noodles were firm.

I had the tempura with grated daikon udon. The tempura was delicious, crispy and the broth poured over the udon was flavorful. The udon noodles were chewy and satisfying. I understand why some people were expressing how delicious it was at the register. I will definitely go back!

I had been interested in this restaurant "Bono" for a while. I thought it would be crowded on weekends because it's close to Shimogamo Shrine, but luckily I was able to sit down easily (there was a line outside right after). I ordered the "Kashiwa Tempura Oroshi Bukkake" with extra shrimp tempura on top. The udon noodles had a good texture, not too firm, with a nice chewiness. They were delicious. The chicken tempura and shrimp tempura were crispy and tasty as expected. However, I felt like the broth was a bit weak compared to the noodles. It's not imbalanced, but I prefer a stronger dashi flavor. I read other reviews and noticed that not many people mention the broth, maybe because it lacks a distinctive flavor? Maybe the balance was off because I ordered extra noodles for the bukkake dish? I think I need to try other menu items to make a final judgment. The restaurant seems lively even at night with "udon-mae" (pre-udon) dining, so I plan to visit at night next time. If I were to rate just the noodles and tempura, it would be around 3.6 to 3.7.

The kitsune udon has a slightly rich broth with a hint of sweetness from the fried tofu. The broth is flavorful thanks to the dashi, making it delicious. Adding ginger enhances the flavor surprisingly well. The curry udon has a thick texture and just the right amount of spiciness, making it tasty. The noodles have decent chewiness, which is good.

We visited the restaurant for lunch with our family. It was our first time there. We arrived a little past the opening time of 11 AM. There was one group of 2 customers already seated, and another customer arrived after us. The restaurant operates with limited seating to maintain social distance. Despite being a popular spot, we were impressed by their efforts. We ordered the "oroshi bukkake," "Yamato potato tororo onsen tamago bukkake," and "soy sauce-spicy! Karashi tsukudani." Based on reviews, we also ordered the "tempura assortment" for 2 people. After waiting for about 5 minutes, the udon was served. We tried the noodles without adding the broth first. The smooth noodles had a refreshing texture and gently soothed our overheated bodies. Simply delicious! There are no other words to describe it. Each dish comes with different condiments, all of which enhance the flavors perfectly. The tempura assortment was equally impressive. Seeing is believing, so I highly recommend experiencing it in person at the restaurant. For the soy sauce udon, you can choose between black vinegar soy sauce or bonito dashi soy sauce. The restaurant also operates as an udon izakaya at night. I look forward to visiting again in the evening.

■Visit Date: November 16, 2019■Items Received・Atsukake Tempura Assortment (6 kinds) with Vegetable Rice・Atsukake Yuba Tempura (Shippoku) with Salted Shrimp Tempura Rice■MEMOVisited on November 16, 2019. The restaurant is located along Shimogamo Hon-dori, close to Shimogamo Shrine. We arrived at 11:00 am when the restaurant opened. There are 17 seats available, including table and counter seats. We chose a table towards the back, where there were baskets to store our belongings, which was convenient. From the menu, we ordered the Atsukake Tempura Assortment with Vegetable Rice, and my wife chose the Atsukake Yuba Tempura (Shippoku) with Salted Shrimp Tempura Rice. The udon had a refined taste with a rich dashi flavor, and the handcrafted noodles had a perfect texture. We enjoyed the piping hot udon and tempura, finishing everything despite feeling full. The tempura was crispy and delicious, whether eaten on its own or dipped in the udon broth. The vegetable rice was also a tasty dish, with a harmonious blend of burdock root, shiitake mushrooms, and carrots. My wife was very satisfied with her lunch. The attentive service from the staff left a positive impression. Thank you for the wonderful meal.■Blog (Japanese): https://ay-style.net/?s=%E3%81%BC%E3%81%AE

It was crowded, but the shop's service was good and the food was delicious. The warm udon with broth was a bit too strong in flavor for me. It was a shame that my family's udon came out at different times, probably because they were made carefully. The tempura was also delicious!

I decided to eat udon and found this place nearby. Despite the heat, I ordered pork cutlet curry udon! It came with a side of shrimp tempura and rice. Let's dig in. The udon was chewy and very delicious! The curry broth was just right and tasty! My favorite part was the shrimp tempura! It was so plump and delicious. If only they had a parking lot, I would come more often. I heard you can get a coin for parking in the parking lot across the street.

Visited for lunch before the Mitarashi Festival, a festival at Shimogamo Shrine. I had the Black Wagyu Beef Sweet Udon and Egg Rice Bowl. My partner had the Kitsune Udon and Tororo Rice. The broth is delicious! The soy sauce for the egg rice bowl is also great, and the rice is tasty. However, the beef in the beef udon had too much fat.

On a scorching hot midsummer day, sweating profusely, I arrived at this place - Udonya Bono!! A friend recommended it, saying "The tempura is delicious!" so I decided to check it out. It was around 1 pm on a weekday, and there was no line, so I was able to be seated quickly. I ordered the Oroshi Bukkake Udon for 690 yen, Tempura Assortment for 790 yen, and Tori Gomoku Gohan (mixed rice with chicken) for 280 yen. The kitchen was run by what seemed to be the master and another person, working efficiently. Before I knew it, my food arrived! The tempura looked really hearty and delicious. Although I wanted to start with the tempura, since I was at an udon shop, I decided to start with the udon. The noodles were chewy yet had a good texture, and the broth was flavorful without being too heavy. The Tori Gomoku Gohan had a subtle chicken flavor and a nice dashi taste, making it a satisfying choice. The tempura was crispy and fried perfectly, and serving it with matcha salt was a nice touch. It was surprisingly light and crunchy. The udon, rice, and tempura - all three were delicious! I will definitely come back here when I'm in the area again.

If you walk from the south to the north of the Shimogamo Shrine grounds, you will reach the main hall. On this day, it was very crowded due to the Kemari (Japanese ancient football) starting event. More to come later... After visiting the shrine, we headed to a nearby udon restaurant. It was quite popular, with 12-3 people lining up. Come to think of it, there are many ramen restaurants in Kyoto, but it seems like udon restaurants are fewer. Maybe ramen restaurants are more flashy and catch the eye? The Yamamoto restaurant near the Heian Shrine always has a long line, so I have not been able to go there yet. Since there was not much time before closing, I went in to check if it was okay to line up. It seemed very busy, but when I asked, a friendly female staff member came out to check the number of people waiting. She was very cheerful and pleasant. I realize that I am always impressed by the Kansai hospitality when I am used to the reserved and high-minded customer service in Tokyo. After waiting for about 20 minutes, we were seated at the counter. - Oroshi Bukkake Udon 690 yen (excluding tax) Toppings: Kashiwa Tempura 230 yen, Chikuwa Tempura 160 yen Since there was no combination of tempura toppings that I wanted, I ordered them separately. This turned out to be a great choice. The tempura chicken (called Kashiwa in Kansai) was fried crisply and served on a separate plate, which made it even more delicious. The Sanuki-style udon, sourced from a flour mill in Kagawa, was smooth and had a pleasant chewy texture. - Kama-age Shirasu Oroshi Bukkake Udon (warm) 940 yen My companion ordered this and said it was delicious. ------ Now back to Shimogamo Shrine... We had seen the Kemari event a long time ago, so we decided to skip it today. As we were lining up to visit the main hall for Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year), we noticed that there was a ritual taking place before the Kemari event where people were visiting the main hall. Lucky us! We were able to take close-up photos of the beautiful costumes of the Heian nobility. I remembered being asked if I could take a photo while wearing a kimono when I visited before. It was a visiting kimono, not a fancy furisode, but... In recent years, there are fewer women in kimono during the New Year, which is a bit sad.
