ITHK
If you walk a little towards Temma Bridge from Kitahama Station, you will find a building called Grunier Kitahama that is not easily visible from the outside but intriguing enough to not pass by. I initially stopped by to try their pastries after seeing them through the window, but I was surprised when I saw the word "Mille-feuille" at the counter. Even more surprising was the fact that they offered a portable Mille-feuille (pictured is the Sakura Mille-feuille). I had always thought of Mille-feuille as a delicate pastry that you have to break apart with a fork to eat, so I was impressed. First of all, it's huge. I've never had such a big Mille-feuille before. And it's not just filled with cream inside, as you might expect. That would be a cream puff. It is properly layered, with flavors changing as you progress through it, including sakura cream, pickled sakura, custard, and more. It was a complete taste experience, even though I couldn't quite understand all the flavors. They also have the princess of cakes, the strawberry Mille-feuille, and a brulee Mille-feuille where the top is caramelized like a creme brulee. The prices range from 1000 to 1500 yen (for those using high-quality fruits), so it's not cheap, but considering the thought put into the dough, fruits, cream, and the texture, I don't think it's expensive at all. This place is not a gimmick; they have put effort into creating these pastries. I like to call them "transformer dishes" because they transform the traditional form into something different, and often the traditional version is better (like pre-folded crepes or short, individually wrapped churros). This Mille-feuille was truly revolutionary for me. It felt like a childhood dream come true for a little extra money as an adult. The taste, the size, everything about it was just perfect. There is no seating inside the store (there's only one bench outside), so it's more of a grab-and-go experience. While cakes are often associated with a leisurely atmosphere, this place offers a different experience, so be prepared for that. Enjoying a Mille-feuille on the go is totally fine, but if you have the chance to sit and savor it, I highly recommend it.
