Located near Namba Grand Kagetsu and along Sennichimae Street, this okonomiyaki restaurant was recommended to me for its Osaka-style dishes. I was told that it is a popular chain with a history of almost 50 years. The first floor, which mainly consists of a counter, was closed, so we were seated on the second floor. It was a weekday evening after 7 pm, and the restaurant was not crowded but had a steady flow of customers. The system was such that the food was cooked for us and served, instead of us cooking it ourselves. If you sit at the counter on the first floor, you can watch the food being cooked right in front of you on the iron griddle. We ordered the following dishes:
- "Dotombori-yaki (¥1820)"
- "Mix Fuwatoro-yaki (¥1480)"
- "Tonpei-yaki (¥600)"
- "Crispy Teppan Gyoza (¥550)"
- "Negi Salad (¥720)"
After waiting for about 8 minutes, the salad dishes arrived, followed by the okonomiyaki dishes after another 10 minutes. The waitress asked if we wanted mayonnaise on top, and she added it beautifully. The "Dotombori-yaki" was a mix of pork, squid, beef tendon, shrimp, cheese, and more. The fluffy texture of the batter allowed the individual ingredients to stand out. The sauce was sweet and had a strong presence, but it blended well with the dish. The "Fuwatoro-yaki" had a batter base of yam, giving it an even fluffier texture. It had a Japanese touch with seaweed, but since the regular batter was already fluffy, it didn't leave a strong impression. The "Tonpei-yaki" was a moist and fluffy omelet with pork inside. It was quick to cook compared to okonomiyaki and served as a great side dish. The "Crispy Gyoza" had a crispy texture, especially on the edges, similar to a wonton. It had a light amount of filling, making it an easy-to-eat appetizer. The "Negi Salad" was a salad consisting mostly of small green onions, with a slight spiciness and a firm texture similar to Shimonita onions. It was served with sesame dressing and okonomiyaki sauce, a unique dish that can only be found at a specialty restaurant. For drinks, we had:
- "Sapporo Draft Beer (¥660)"
- "Senbou Special Highball (¥570)"
The "Special Highball" was made with black tea and topped with lemon. It had a unique taste that may take some getting used to at first, but it was quite enjoyable. While it can be fun to cook your own food, leaving it to the professionals is also a great choice. This restaurant is definitely a safe bet for delicious okonomiyaki.
