Title "2022 Railway Day Commemorative Ticket Journey #6, this time it was really delicious, half-sized okonomiyaki"
On the second day of the railway day commemorative ticket journey with my friend K on October 2022, we enjoyed the Night ZOO at Tennoji Zoo in the evening, and on our way to Nishinari Kitchen U-chan, we made a stop. We decided to have a light meal at U-chan to save some money. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:43 PM on Saturday, with about 3 other customers already seated at the outdoor tables. There were also quite a few customers getting takeout, and the place seemed to have a steady stream of customers coming in. The staff was the same elderly gentleman as last time. This time, I decided to try the cheapest menu item, the pork and egg okonomiyaki for 100 yen. Here is my rating out of 10 points:
Pork and Egg Okonomiyaki (100 yen): 10/10! Last time, I had this dish after drinking at U-chan, so I was quite full and a bit drunk, and couldn't really appreciate it. This time, I had only had one strong canned drink 1.5 hours prior, so I was sober. When I tried it this time, I noticed that the pork was actually in there and it was delicious! The dough part may feel a bit powdery because there is more dough than ingredients, but the sauce and bonito flakes give it the authentic okonomiyaki flavor. It had cabbage, egg, and pork (likely pork belly), and the texture and umami of the pork really stood out. The size was about half to one-third of a regular okonomiyaki, making it a perfect snack. Many customers were buying two or three to take home. It's similar to cabbage yakisoba, but the dough is thicker and closer to okonomiyaki. It was delicious! Next time, I want to try the large pancake or pork okonomiyaki during a less busy time.
~Afterwards~
There is an arcade right next to the restaurant, and at the end of the arcade is the izakaya Nishinari Kitchen U-chan. It was great last time, but how was it this time? Let's go inside. (2022.10.15)
