When it comes to Kyoto's obanzai, the image is usually of homely small dishes, but this place offers authentic obanzai made by professional chefs. From simple dishes to elaborate ones, everything is delicious, and considering the quality, the prices are very reasonable. It's great for entertaining guests or going with close friends, making it a versatile and cost-effective restaurant.

After a long time, I visited Ayatomi, a home-style Kyoto cuisine restaurant. It has a Kyoto-like atmosphere where you can casually enjoy obanzai dishes. The customers on this day were mostly international, enjoying the traditional Japanese atmosphere. The obanzai dishes are made with a gentle Kyoto-style dashi broth, creating a comforting and heartwarming experience. The service is also quick, which is great. The dishes we had (for 2 people) were:
- Eggplant simmered in dashi broth (600 yen)
- Happy rolled sushi (850 yen)
- Assorted sashimi platter (2900 yen)
- Tempura bamboo shoots (920 yen)
- Kyoto-style fried tofu (600 yen)
There were 18 types of sake available, with options for glass, small tokkuri, and large tokkuri sizes. The sakes we tried (for 2 people) were:
- Hanaya from Toyama Prefecture, special junmai
- Atago no Matsu from Miyagi Prefecture, junmai harukoi
- Hououbita from Tochigi Prefecture, arasashi oshikiri gaisen
- Kanazawaya from Fukushima Prefecture, junmai ginjo
- Hatsukame from Shizuoka Prefecture, special junmai muroka nama
- Tateyama from Toyama Prefecture, special junmai gaisen
- Kidou from Nara Prefecture, junmai daiginjo nama genshu

I made a reservation for Saturday and visited the restaurant. The appetizer was duck meatballs and simmered tofu, both very tasty. The sashimi platter had flounder, seared mackerel, tuna toro, swordtip squid, amberjack, and striped jack, all thick slices and delicious. The three side dishes were simmered eggplant, deep-fried chicken, and Kyoto green onion with tofu, all very tasty. The chigirifu tofu dish was fluffy and sweet like a dessert. The tempura included spring vegetables and oysters with seaweed, and the shrimp and potato gratin was delicious. The grilled fatty fish was also very good. For dessert, we had grilled mackerel sushi and a variety of pickles. Sitting at the counter was interesting because we could see the chefs at work. The green tea we had after paying was also delicious.

The group used the restaurant for a New Year's party this time, and all the dishes were delicious. The place and atmosphere make it seem like a hidden gem in the city, so I would like to bring a few people from other prefectures who are here for work next time.

On the day of our visit, we managed to get a reservation, but the restaurant was quite busy. The atmosphere was like a mix between an izakaya and a traditional Japanese restaurant, but sitting at the counter was quite relaxing. We started with a toast of draft beer and enjoyed a side dish of simmered greens and fried tofu. The appetizer platter included fried eggplant, thick fried tofu, and assorted fried foods, all with a distinct Kyoto flavor. The dishes were simple yet elegant, showcasing the traditional flavors of Kyoto. We paired our meal with sake, opting for a dry selection recommended by the chef. The sashimi platter featured striped jack, Spanish mackerel, and amberjack, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The crab miso was a delightful addition, perfect for pairing with our drinks. We also enjoyed grilled sea bream head, grilled goby, and salt-grilled saury, each dish showcasing the skill of the chef. Unfortunately, they were out of mackerel sushi, but they kindly offered us hand-pressed Spanish mackerel sushi instead. Despite eating and drinking well, we were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable price. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant.

I made a reservation and visited an izakaya in Kawaramachi, Kyoto on a weekday night. It was quite crowded but they seated us in a spacious area. The traditional Japanese house exterior was charming, and the food was delicious at a reasonable price. It seems like it would be well-received by visitors from overseas.

I revisited this restaurant in response to a request for a Kyoto-like place for guests from Tokyo. The quality is as reliable as ever... Everything I eat here is delicious. This time, I had the following items:
- Assorted sashimi (3 types)
- Assorted obanzai (3 types)
- Deep-fried shrimp and taro
- Namerou (minced fish)
- Sake-kasudako cheese
- Seared mackerel sushi
Everything was delicious as usual, but the sashimi stood out with its firm texture. I had amberjack, sea bream, and squid, all of which were incredibly fresh. The deep-fried shrimp and taro is a personal favorite of mine. The namerou has a stronger taste of condiments compared to other places, which may be a hit or miss for some, but I personally like the slightly stronger flavor. As for the seared mackerel sushi, it speaks for itself. You can't leave Ayatomi without having it, and once you try it, your taste buds will be amazed.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I couldn't visit for a while, but finally went back after a long time. The appetizers were still delicious as ever, and the drinks went down smoothly. I enjoyed a fulfilling time savoring the food. The seared mackerel sushi at the end was exquisite. I will definitely come back. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Located at the corner of Ayanokoji and Tomikoji streets, just one block south of Shijo Street in Kyoto, this restaurant is where I decided to satisfy my craving for conger eel. When it comes to conger eel in Kyoto, the options are endless, but I chose this place. They serve conger eel sushi as well. I dropped by right after they opened without a reservation, so I was seated at the end of the counter. I ordered a variety of dishes, focusing mainly on conger eel. The conger eel with plum paste was delightful. The sashimi of striped jack and fatty tuna were delicious, and the miso-glazed dish was comforting. The atmosphere of the restaurant was quiet and relaxing, which I appreciated. The chef was calm and welcoming. I also got a chance to see the second floor, which had private rooms with sunken kotatsu tables, perfect for a cozy winter hot pot meal. Overall, I had a delicious meal and a pleasant dining experience.

Unexpectedly, the second visit of the week! This is the first installment of the revisiting series before the end of my stay in Kyoto. I was able to enjoy a relaxing time at the counter and had a satisfying experience this time. There are many other places I want to visit again, but I have narrowed it down to two choices based on availability, including tomorrow. The delicious food and cozy atmosphere remain the same! I will keep coming back until they remember me!

Every year at the end of the year, I visit this famous restaurant. The atmosphere, the taste, everything is amazing! I had a wonderful time again this year. The must-try dishes are the rolled omelette, beef tendon daikon, salt-grilled duck, and seared mackerel sushi. It's truly a serene atmosphere where you can fully enjoy your meal. Tonight, there was a group of four loud and immature individuals who were quite annoying with their childish conversations, but I still managed to have a good time! They claimed to be from Kanazawa, but they seemed quite ignorant. And one of them, who is from Kyoto, didn't even know the difference between cloud ear fungus and shirako (milt) and loudly mispronounced it, which was quite uncool.

Delicious, happy. The restaurant seems a bit intimidating from the outside, but the staff is very friendly and the service is excellent. The food is delicious. The majority of customers were in their late 30s or older. They have a wide variety of sake. Compared to nearby izakayas, the prices may be a bit higher, but the atmosphere, customer base, and level of business make it a worthwhile place to visit.

Ayakoji-dori - Tomiokoji-dori intersection near a Japanese restaurant. The large sunken kotatsu counter is comfortable. The Kyoto-like atmosphere is also lovely~(o^^o)We had○ Sashimi 3 kinds (from 1790 yen)○ Obanzai 3 kinds assortment (1090 yen)○ Tempura assortmentThe food was delicious and carefully prepared. The ingredients for sashimi were also good. They have a variety of rare national brand sake such as Juyondai and Isojiman, recommended for sake lovers. More than an izakaya, less than a traditional Japanese restaurant, it has a Kyoto-like atmosphere where you can easily enjoy Japanese cuisine. It's like a "home-style traditional Japanese restaurant" The balance of food, sake, price range, and atmosphere is very good(o^^o) You can casually visit alone, so I would like to find the opportunity to revisit again.

On Friday night, I made a reservation and visited this restaurant. The dishes were all elegant and delicious. The sashimi was outstanding! The atmosphere of the restaurant was also nice, with a spacious counter and a traditional Japanese-style interior. I would like to bring friends here. The only downside is that the cost performance is a bit high. The customers were mostly in their 30s and 40s. But I would like to visit this restaurant again.

Located in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, this small restaurant exudes a traditional Japanese atmosphere with its quaint building. The exterior exudes a sense of elegance, and stepping inside, you'll find a dimly lit, atmospheric setting. The two-story building we visited had a brighter second floor, where we were seated. The regular menu booklet was charming and well-designed, and the daily specials were handwritten, showcasing the attention to detail at this establishment. With a wide variety of dishes to choose from, we opted for a sashimi platter, shrimp tempura, yuba gratin, and grilled duck.
- Sashimi Platter: Fresh and delicious, each type of sashimi was flavorful and not at all fishy, with a satisfying texture and depth of umami.
- Shrimp Tempura: Lightly battered with a delicate crunch and a fragrant aroma, the shrimp tempura was a delightful combination of juicy shrimp and crispy coating.
- Yuba Gratin: A hot and creamy gratin made with yuba, offering a lighter twist on the classic dish. The balance of flavors and textures was excellent, showcasing the unique qualities of yuba.
- Grilled Duck: Each bite of the salt-grilled duck released a burst of the meat's distinctive aroma and richness, with a crispy exterior and juicy interior. The simple preparation allowed the delicious flavor of the duck to shine through.
The Japanese sake served was delicious, complementing the dishes perfectly. This restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience where you can enjoy both the ambiance and the exquisite cuisine that Kyoto is known for.

I happened to find this restaurant while looking for a place to eat. The atmosphere outside the restaurant was inviting, and luckily there was an open seat at the counter. They had a great selection of Japanese sake that I liked, and the food was delicious and paired well with the drinks. I will definitely be coming back again. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

During my visit to Kyoto, I was drawn to a restaurant in the Kawaramachi area with a sunken kotatsu-style counter. I left my shoes at the entrance and sat at the sunken counter, similar to a sushi bar. The atmosphere was bright with high ceilings, giving a sense of cleanliness. The proximity to the chef was nice, making it suitable for a date.
I ordered a 7-piece sashimi platter, shrimp skewers, dashimaki tamago (rolled omelette with broth), simmered eggplant, and grilled duck as à la carte items. The sashimi included fatty amberjack which was delicious. The dashimaki tamago was fluffy with a rich broth flavor. The shrimp skewers featured large shrimp with a simple salt seasoning. Each dish was meticulously seasoned and simply delicious.
The concept of "home-style cuisine elevated to the level of traditional Japanese haute cuisine" was evident in their dishes. I enjoyed several glasses of sake, and the total cost was 8500 yen per person. I would definitely revisit this restaurant when I want to have a leisurely meal in Kyoto again.

After enjoying delicious oysters, we decided to visit this second restaurant. Since the first place was a Western-style restaurant, we opted for a Japanese-style one for the second. We arrived a bit late for our reservation, but we were warmly welcomed. Thank you very much. The restaurant has a large sunken kotatsu counter surrounding the kitchen, private rooms, and tables on the second floor. There were three of us, so we were seated at the counter. The counter is recommended. Since we were already full, we ordered light dishes such as Kyoto-style tempura, sliced horse mackerel with green onions, sashimi of horse mackerel, simmered daikon with yuzu, and minced raw fish. We also ordered Kenhachi sake. It has a unique aroma and taste like roasted barley, which I like. My friend ordered Yamanoue sake. The sliced horse mackerel with green onions had a nice acidity that paired well with the sake. It was very comforting. The sashimi of horse mackerel was thick and fatty. The simmered daikon with yuzu had a refreshing yuzu flavor that spread in the mouth. It was also tender. The minced raw fish was made with amberjack. The myoga added a nice touch, making it easy to enjoy with sake. Before we knew it, we finished the Kenhachi sake, so we ordered Eikun for our second round. It's a sake from Kyoto. I was starting to feel a bit tipsy, haha. I felt that it would be a waste to only visit this restaurant as the second one. It's a place where you can enjoy a hearty meal and drinks after visiting the first place. I can't stress enough how great the sunken kotatsu counter is. You can enjoy your meal while watching the chef prepare the dishes. The counter is spacious, allowing you to dine comfortably. We discovered a great restaurant. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

It is a restaurant located at the corner of Ayakoji and Tomikoji streets. The atmosphere is very inviting from the entrance, and it builds up expectations. The counter and sunken kotatsu tables are spacious and comfortable. The traditional Japanese cuisine is refined and delicious. Personally, I especially liked the slightly innovative mackerel sushi. This restaurant is always a top choice when craving Japanese food.
