On a certain day in December 2018, my favorite musician was performing in Osaka, so I made a trip from Hiroshima in a light car. Originally, I planned to go alone, but unexpectedly my partner decided to join me! The trip was partly related to work, as I had met someone through a side job who owned a similar genre shop in Osaka, so it became a one-night business trip.
We arrived at 3:30 and wandered around the America-mura area before having dinner before the live show. We left the parking lot at 10 pm. Osaka charges 300 yen for 30 minutes, but for some reason, there was a 1500 yen limit until midnight, which was convenient.
We ended up at "Kushikatsu Tanaka" in America-mura, which was quite noticeable. It was my first time there, so I didn't mind that it was a chain restaurant. It was 5 pm, and there were already four couples and two groups of girls as customers. Since my partner was driving, I had to make do with wandering around. We received our food and it became our "dinner".
We ordered a 5-piece assortment with beef, pork, shrimp, onion, and lotus root on one plate, and additional beef, pork, pickled ginger x2. My partner ordered quail, while I ordered liver cutlet, tomato, and ginkgo nuts. After a short wait, all the dishes arrived at once.
The sauce was different from what I had at Osaka Station before. It had a hint of acidity and was light in texture. It didn't taste spicy and had a hint of dashi. To me, it tasted best with the classic "pork". My partner ended up taking four pieces of meat without sharing! The liver cutlet had a slight smell to it, probably due to its thickness. I would have preferred if the liver was thinly sliced and fried flat.
The ginger pickles unique to Osaka were large and thinly sliced. My partner loved them, but I found the acidity a bit too much for my taste. However, they tasted great when eaten with the meat! My favorite was the cherry tomato, which was delicious. It was crunchy and juicy, making it a delight to eat. The ginkgo nuts were lacking in flavor compared to the fried batter. The boiled lotus root and sweet onion were also tasty.
The vegetable fry was delicious, with a fine and chewy batter. The batter is a key component of Osaka's kushikatsu and adds to the overall experience. The light sauce was also a nice touch. Overall, we enjoyed the meal. We had to keep it light as we were going to a live show, and my partner planned to have beer at the hotel later. The total cost for the two of us was slightly over 3500 yen. It felt a bit expensive for the amount of food we received. Without drinks, it would have been around 840 yen, which is the price of a lunch set. Dinner was pricey, but we still had a good time.
