Local gourmet food exploration! In Kyoto City, Nakagyo-ku, Karasuma, I visited the popular restaurant "Setsubai Hana Saikon Tan" for the first time to enjoy the famous Chinese home-cooked dish made with seasonal Kyoto vegetables, the medicinal Tai Chi hot pot! On a weekend trip to visit my daughter and her husband in Osaka, I decided to explore the local gourmet food scene. On the second day of my trip, I had lunch in Shichijo and then wandered around Kyoto, visiting places like Nanzen-ji Temple and Heian Shrine. By chance, I met a friend in Kyoto and had dinner together in Karasuma. Just a 5-minute walk from Shijo-Karasuma Station, we arrived at a historic and elegant 100-year-old Kyoto townhouse. Inside, there was a stylish and modern Japanese-style room. Established in 2004 and operating for 18 years in this location, the popular and well-reviewed restaurant "Setsubai Hana Saikon Tan" is part of the SAI Group, serving Chinese home-cooked dishes made with Kyoto vegetables and root vegetables. At my friend's recommendation, we ordered the Medicinal Hot Pot Course for ¥6000. We started with a refreshing sparkling drink and waited for our meal. After about 5 minutes, we were served three cold appetizers, including Bang Bang Chicken and dried tofu, as well as a lettuce salad. Everything was delicious and exquisite. Next, we enjoyed two types of dim sum: chive buns and shrimp chive buns. The chive buns were filled with tender pork and had a delightful chive flavor, while the shrimp chive buns had a crunchy texture and were incredibly tasty. Soon, the hot pot arrived with spicy Sichuan soup on one side and a rich medicinal chicken broth on the other. We cooked pork, beef, chicken, red shrimp, red snapper, scallops, yuba, enoki mushrooms, Kyoto vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, mochi, and chives in the two different broths, alternating between the two for a delicious experience. The mild and comforting taste of the chicken broth combined with the spicy kick of the Sichuan soup was exceptional. We couldn't stop eating the flavorful and addictive hot pot dishes. For dessert, we had a silky smooth almond tofu that was perfectly sweet. The outstanding and delicious dishes, with their unique medicinal flavors, enjoyed in the historic Kyoto townhouse, left a lasting impression. I can't wait to come back for more of this addictive and delicious food!
