In June 2015, I stopped by a roadside station located along Route 5 in Morishichiri, which is a bit off the beaten path. The unique H-shaped building houses a restaurant, local product sales area, and an observation lounge. Behind the building, there is a well-maintained park called Oniushi Park. There is a large parking lot for about 100 cars in front of the building. Initially, I only planned to take a restroom break, but ended up checking out the local product sales area as well. The sales area is located on the right side of the first floor, with shelves displaying various products, including seafood processed goods which seemed to be the specialty. I was drawn to the sign saying "Exclusive in-store sales, popular products!" and bought "Salmon Jerky (250g) for 1,350 yen" for myself, while my companion who loves octopus bought "Octopus Tonbi (150g) for 648 yen" from Maruwa Octopus Shop. The salmon jerky, which I enjoyed with a midday beer at the inn I was staying at, was from Richwell and according to the Fresh Direct Net website, it is exclusively sold online. The sign saying "Exclusive in-store sales, popular products!" seemed to be true, as the jerky was indeed delicious. The stick-shaped jerky was easy to eat, skinless, slightly tough, with a simple salt seasoning. It lacked a bit of initial impact, but had a refreshing aftertaste and a gradual umami flavor from the salmon. I quite liked it and even enjoyed the remaining jerky lightly grilled at home, which made it tender and fragrant, perfect with beer. I would definitely purchase it again if I stop by this roadside station.
