The "Vege Don" series from Yoshinoya, which first appeared in May last year, has been renewed as of March 3rd. The new "Vege Don" (480 yen), new "Vege Gyudon" (590 yen), and new "Vege Curry" (590 yen) are now available. The previous Vege Don had not been tried, but the new series offers a generous serving of vegetables, equivalent to half a day's worth, in a more mellow and healthier way with the addition of onion sauce containing quercetin from one whole onion (about 150g). The previous version featured 11 types of warm vegetables seasoned with a sesame oil-flavored special "umashio" sauce. The calorie count for the previous version was 415kcal for a regular size, while the new version has been reduced to 399kcal, with one of the vegetables, chives, being omitted. The warm vegetables included baby corn, okra, broccoli, sweet potato, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, green beans, carrot, cabbage, scallion, and onion, with the skin-on sweet potato resembling pineapple at the bottom left. It's healthy and delicious, but being a meatless dish, it may feel a bit lacking. The onion sauce is so mild that it made me want to add a little soy sauce from the condiment tray, but that would go against the healthy eating concept, so I refrained from doing so. It's a menu that can be enjoyed daily, but having chicken in it would provide the necessary protein intake, which would be even better. However, that might affect the brand identity of a beef bowl chain, so it may not be possible even if desired.
