In the center of Kyoto, when it comes to shopping streets, Nishiki Shopping Street is famous for tourists, but for a strong local flavor and close proximity to the city center, Sanjo Shopping Street is well-known as a relatively large shopping street of about 1 kilometer in length. While there are many shops catering to local customers from the middle of the Showa era, new shops have been established and especially gourmet shops have been increasing. One of them is the Sasa Yakigashi Koubou bakery. Despite being relatively new, it has been around for almost 40 years. Western-style pastry shops are concentrated east of Horikawa Street, and surprisingly few are found on the west side. Among the few, bakery shops are rare and offer a wide variety, which is why I keep coming back. This time, I bought:
- Pumpkin Loaf (550 yen): It looks like a pound cake, but it is more moist and goes well with tea. It is topped with a firm cheese cream, which serves as an accent to the relatively sweet cake below. Although it is moist, it is quite substantial, and half of it is enough.
- Rum Fruit Cake (550 yen): As a fan of cakes with alcohol, this is a must-try. Although it contains alcohol, it is not overpowering, so it is not like a savarin soaked in alcohol. It contains various dried fruits, and the cake itself is firmer than the aforementioned Pumpkin Loaf, but it is not lumpy. The white topping is sugar. This cake is not always available for sale, so it's lucky if you find it.
- Raspberry White Chocolate Brownie (400 yen): This time, I bought it as a souvenir for an acquaintance, so I didn't eat it, but I remember that the sweetness of white chocolate and the acidity of raspberries matched well. It is smaller in size compared to the previous two, making it just right for one person. This area is densely populated with residential buildings, making it convenient to bring as a souvenir to acquaintances or to buy 2-3 varieties to share with family and enjoy. All of them go well with black tea.
