On September 9, 2023, I visited a restaurant in Uzumasa, Kyoto, known as the birthplace of eating chili oil. I arrived around 12:30 pm and there was no wait. I ordered the homemade sesame tantan noodles set, which came with a choice of rice or special Hong Kong-style congee, salad, meat bun, pickled vegetables, and oolong tea jelly. I selected the special Hong Kong-style congee and it arrived promptly. The tantan noodles had thin noodles and a mildly spicy and easy-to-eat soup. The special Hong Kong-style congee was light and flavorful with a clam broth. The meat bun, which arrived a bit later, had a sweet crust and was a nice snack. I tried adding chili oil to the tantan noodles, congee, and even a bit on the meat bun. The garlic chips in the chili oil added a crunchy texture and depth of flavor, enhancing the dishes. I finished the meal with a refreshing oolong tea jelly. I also bought a bottle of their chili oil as a souvenir, making the total cost around 2,000 yen, which was quite reasonable. Overall, this restaurant in Uzumasa is a great choice for lunch when visiting the area.

Today, I was in Kyoto and wanted to have a local Kyoto lunch, but the place I wanted to go was unexpectedly closed. Since I was traveling by car, I decided to visit a Chinese restaurant called "菜館Wong" that I had been curious about. I ordered the tantanmen lunch and it arrived in less than 5 minutes. The meat bun that came with the set was steamed after I placed the order. This place seems to be the origin of eating chili oil with food, as many customers were seen putting it on congee, ramen, and rice. I also enjoyed sprinkling plenty of chili oil on my rice and ramen, and it was delicious with a satisfying spiciness. I was surprised by the delay in receiving the meat bun, but it was also tasty. It was a satisfying lunch experience. Thank you for the meal!

I went after a long time and got lost because the place had changed. I had a set of negi soba and porridge, which were as delicious and gentle as always! Many customers were eating tantanmen, so maybe that's the specialty. I like to change the flavor by adding chili oil to the porridge, but this time I added too much and choked, embarrassing... It seems you can make lunch reservations by phone on weekends and holidays. I thought I would make a reservation when I go on weekends and holidays.

Nestled in a corner of the Uzumasa Shopping Street is the shop where eating chili oil originated. I was able to enter without much of a wait since it was a weekday, but I heard it gets crowded on weekends. I had the tantanmen set for lunch, which had a nice balance of flavors, not too strong or too light. I added some eating chili oil for a bit of extra spice midway through, it was slightly spicy and added a nice crunch. Delicious! The dessert, Oolong tea jelly, was subtly sweet and the perfect way to end the meal.

Visited the restaurant with my family after a long time. We ordered daikon mochi, sesame dumplings, xiaolongbao, fried mochi, deep-fried shrimp toast with sesame flavor, bánh mì sandwich, tantanmen, and rice. Everything was delicious, but the most impressive was the original chili oil placed on the table. It was really tasty (^ ^) Since it's close to our home, we would like to come back again!

The taste is stable and reliable. The eggplant is delicious too! The famous spicy oil for eating has been upgraded to a spicier version and it tastes even better. I love putting the spicy oil in the porridge and eating it. The Oolong tea jelly dessert has a stronger bitterness now, and it is also delicious.

I arrived around 6:30 on a weekday and was able to be seated right away. This time, I had the homemade sesame tantan noodles, xiaolongbao, and pork bun. The homemade sesame tantan noodles were mild with a subtle spiciness. Adding the table's chili oil made it just right. Thank you for the meal. 134 people rated it 3.54 out of 5.

I went to the restaurant on a Saturday night before 8 pm without making a reservation. The sign at the restaurant said they were fully booked for the day. However, I decided to try my luck and asked the staff if they could accommodate me, even if it took some time. Luckily, they were able to seat me. All the dishes were delicious. I especially loved the chili oil they served, so I bought some to take home. It seems like you can only purchase it if you eat at the restaurant, so I look forward to going back to buy more.

I parked my car at a nearby coin parking and visited the restaurant around 8pm. Upon entering, I noticed that the compact interior had tables and a counter, with private rooms in the back. Since the counter was full, I sat at an available table and ordered the "Homemade Sesame Tantanmen" (900 yen) and "White Rice" (180 yen), which were my main purpose for visiting. The dish came in a white bowl with bean sprouts, minced meat, and chopped green onions, topped with a yellow sesame-colored soup that had a clear broth base. The soup had a tangy and light umami flavor with a fragrant sesame aroma, along with a good balance of richness and sharpness. It had a slight spicy kick, but even those who are not fans of spicy food could enjoy it. The noodles were thin and straight, with a stretchy and chewy texture that complemented the soup well. I also tried the white rice with the restaurant's famous "eating chili oil," which was incredibly flavorful and far superior to store-bought versions. The restaurant was adorned with posters of various movies and dramas, giving it a charming cinematic vibe that seemed to be beloved by locals and entertainment industry professionals. With a variety of appealing menu options, including lunch and set menus, I look forward to visiting again.

On the way back from hanami in Arashiyama, we were looking for a place to have lunch and found a few people lining up in front of a restaurant. Since the reviews on Tabelog were good, we decided to wait and ordered the tantanmen set. After reading other people's posts later, I realized that the tantanmen was much lighter than I had imagined. It was like a regular noodle soup base with sesame paste and a little bit of spiciness added, so I felt it was a bit lacking in richness... If I go again next time, I would like to try the other types of noodles. The set comes with a choice of rice or porridge, and the porridge is really delicious ✨✨ It seems to be loved by the locals, with quite a few regular customers, and the set costs 1100 yen including noodles, porridge or rice, salad, pickled vegetables, and oolong tea jelly, so it's a nice place to visit if you're nearby. Thank you for the meal.

This is a restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Cantonese cuisine prepared by a chef from Hong Kong. It is said to be the original creator of "eating chili oil." I ordered the "Weekly Service Lunch" (11:30-14:00) which includes a choice of three dishes: "Fried chicken," "Stir-fried bean sprouts and pork," and "Tender chicken in sweet and sour sauce." You can also choose between "Rice + Soup" or "Special Hong Kong Congee." On this day, I chose "Tender chicken in sweet and sour sauce" with "Rice + Soup." The set also includes salad, meat bun, pickled vegetables, and oolong tea jelly. The light and flavorful taste made it easy to keep eating. When I drizzled the "eating chili oil" on my rice, I couldn't stop eating. I finished my meal quickly. The "eating chili oil" is available for purchase as a souvenir for those who dine in the restaurant. In addition to this, the menu includes "Handmade Hong Kong Dim Sum Set," various noodle dishes, rice dishes, and more.

Located near Arashiyama-Dentetsu Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, at the entrance of the Daiei Street shopping arcade, is "Saikan Wong", a popular Cantonese cuisine restaurant known for its healthy Chinese lunches at reasonable prices. It has been featured in the media frequently and is often crowded during lunchtime and weekends. It is also said to be the birthplace of "eating chili oil". I stopped by "Saikan Wong" while visiting the Sagano Onsen Tenzan no Yu hot spring to have lunch. [Saikan Wong's Lunch] *Comments are included in the photos ◆Homemade sesame tantan noodles set ◎Comes with Hong Kong congee, salad, meat bun, pickled vegetables, and oolong tea jelly ◉The sesame tantan noodles had a rich soup with a sesame aroma and sweetness, not too spicy with just the right amount of acidity. Adding chili oil to the Hong Kong congee made it extremely delicious. Thank you for the meal.

The feeling of being a great deal like it used to be has faded, but it is still delicious and good value for money. I think I've just gotten used to the taste (lol). I've tried almost all the lunch menu items and they were all delicious and satisfying. Maybe the price of the chili oil has gone up, so I don't feel the same great deal as before. I even saw a famous actress inside the restaurant (of course, I didn't approach her, lol). The waitresses and Mr. Wong are all cheerful and the atmosphere is bright. I definitely want to go back.

It's been a while since I visited Nakan Won. This Chinese restaurant is located on the Oeido Street in Uzumasa, and they serve delicious dishes with an option to add eating chili oil. I recommend pouring plenty of chili oil on the rice or porridge that comes with the set meal. On this day, I decided to indulge and ordered the Pork and Bean Sprout Soup Noodles Set for 1000 yen (with rice). The eating chili oil became popular after being introduced by Yuki Amami on TV. The staff from Momoya even came here for research. I personally prefer the soup noodles or green onion noodles, but they also have great options like tantanmen, fried noodles, and regular set meals. Everything is delicious and this place is the best! I look forward to trying other types of noodles next time.

Located near Kyo-Tanabe Station in Ukyo Ward, Uzumasa, this Chinese restaurant is famous for its spicy chili oil. They offer a lunch set for 1000 yen, which is quite reasonable. I chose the mapo tofu lunch set. You can choose between regular white rice and congee, and this time I chose white rice. When the lunch arrived, they mentioned that the meat bun would come later. I started eating without it and completely forgot about it. When the meat bun finally arrived, I had already finished my meal and put away my camera, so unfortunately, I don't have a photo of it. It was a cute meat bun that could be eaten in one bite. The taste was good, and the service by the friendly wife-like staff was sufficient. However, it seems like there may be some issues with the kitchen's organization.

I stopped by this restaurant on a weekday after work. It's a place that an actor who often visits when he comes to Uzumasa and was featured on TV as having delicious food during the time when eating spicy chili oil was popular. Normally, I would just pass by because I'm not a fan of oily Chinese food or spicy dishes, but on this day, I was looking for a meal to lift my spirits after a tiring day at work. I also heard from a girl who had been to a drinking party at her part-time job that the food was delicious. I ordered the Weekday Dinner Set (1,850 yen) which included a healthy vegetable salad, Hong Kong wonton soup, handmade dim sum, and a main dish (I chose the shrimp and radish stew from this week's main dishes). It also came with pickled vegetables and a choice of white rice, Hong Kong congee, lo mein, or Jajangmyeon. I chose the Hong Kong congee because I like it. The dessert was beyond my expectations and worth the price! Everything was delicious. But actually, my favorite part was the restaurant's original chili oil that was placed on the table! Some customers even came just to buy the chili oil, and despite choosing Hong Kong congee instead of white rice, I kept asking for more of the chili oil (laughs). It's oily, but... I want to eat it again. I will definitely come back when I crave it and buy the chili oil!

This restaurant may be perceived as having a mild flavor by some people. On the contrary, its gentle seasoning is well received by children and elderly customers. In my 40s, when I visit this restaurant, I always order by saying, "Please season it more strongly." The owner and chef, Wong, who rigidly adheres to the basics of cooking, easily accommodates such requests. The specialty congee lacks saltiness. However, when you add their proud eating chili oil, it becomes 500 million times more delicious. Wong, a first-class chef who skillfully balances flavors, is like the right-hand man of the famous Hong Kong chef, Tsubono Tsuji. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Wong is the right-hand man of Tsubono Tsuji at Heishi-no-Tsuji.

I stopped by before going to Tenzan no Yu. I visited the restaurant "Nakan Wong" which was featured on the TV show "Sekkaku Gourmet" by Banana Man. It was just before lunchtime, but there was one seat available so I went in. The restaurant isn't very big, but it seemed like there were rooms in the back as well. I didn't want lunch, so I ordered the Sesame Tantanmen (¥850 tax included) on its own. On TV, they introduced the Sesame Tantanmen set for ¥1,000 (tax included), which seemed like a better deal, but I didn't think I could finish it... The Sesame Tantanmen was a bit sweet and the portion of noodles was small. It could have used a bit more kick for a Tantanmen. In that case, they had their famous "eating chili oil" on the table which you can enjoy with the dish. If you go, I recommend getting the set as it's a better deal.

WongKUMA Chinese restaurant Survey (Daily Use) (100: Supreme 80 Excellent: 60: Good 50 Pass 40: Pass) (Taste: 60%: Others 40%) ■ Overall rating 38 points (Taste: 40 points) A popular Chinese restaurant representing the region! There is still room for improvement in the evaluation, and expectations are high for the future. I came to the movie village, so I looked for a well-rated restaurant for lunch and visited this place. When I arrived at the restaurant, there were about 2 groups waiting in line at the entrance. After waiting for about 10 minutes, I entered the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant was made in a Chinese style, with all decorations being Chinese. I ordered the weekly set meal and waited for about 10 minutes, while the man who shared the table with me ordered at the same time and was served 3 minutes later. ■ Usage Scene Family ◯・Couple ◯・Solo ◯・Banquet △・Business △ ■ Store/Service 30 points 6 points □ Store/Interior/Cleanliness ◯ The store is not very visible, but there is a large tatami room at the back. The restaurant seems to be run by Chinese people. □ Service/System/Service × When it's crowded, you need to enter the restaurant first and write your name on a sheet of paper placed next to the cash register. I was told about this later. It seems like there is only one person serving, so it gets busy during lunchtime. Also, the meat buns came out after I finished eating. There is a need for improvement in management. □ Comfort × Since it mainly focuses on sharing tables, the comfort level is somewhat poor. ■ Ordered Dish Weekly Set Meal (Fried Chicken with Local Chicken) ¥1000 ■ Taste Evaluation 40 points 24 points □ Fried Chicken It's average. The meat was flavorful and delicious. □ Porridge It's decent. There was a lingering smell at the end that I couldn't identify, but it was a scent that is sometimes present in Chinese cuisine (which I personally don't like). It tastes delicious with added chili oil. They also sell this chili oil, so I might buy some to take home. □ Meat Bun It's simply delicious. It's comparable to the meat buns sold at convenience stores. ■ Cost Performance 40 points 8 points The taste is decent, but the prices are reasonable.

Today, I visited the restaurant Wong. I arrived 30 minutes before opening and wandered around the area because I was a little early. When I came back exactly at 11:30, there was already a line forming. Luckily, I was able to get in on the first round, so it was good. I chose the set lunch and ordered mapo tofu as the main with congee. I wanted to try the noodles too, but I'll do that next time. The mapo tofu was delicious, and the congee had a nice flavor as well. The side dish of pickled vegetables was also tasty. The dessert was good too. Thank you for the meal.
