One day, when I asked a female acquaintance in Obihiro, "What's a recommended dish in Obihiro other than pork bowl and Indian curry?" she replied, "Hmm, I can't think of anything." "No way, it can't be like that. Obihiro, the treasure trove of Hokkaido's food, right? There must be something," I said. "Hmm, I can't think of anything... Oh! Now that you mention it, there's Chinese chirashi!" "Chinese chirashi? What's that? What kind of food is it?" It's a dish name I've never heard before. It seems to be a hidden soul food of Obihiro, known only to a few. So, for today's lunch, I visited "Shunkaro" to try the "Chinese chirashi." The restaurant is located at Nishi 10-jo Minami 17-chome in Obihiro. It's about 1.5km from the south exit of Obihiro Station, but since I'm not familiar with the area, I followed the navigation instructions. Parking is available on both sides of the store. I entered the restaurant a little before 12 o'clock. The place was quite busy. As the name "Shunkaro" suggests, this place is a complete town Chinese restaurant. The interior is subtly decorated in a Chinese style. The store name with the suffix "ro" often used in Chinese restaurants gives an authentic Chinese vibe. I sat at a table and looked at the menu. Oh, ramen starts at 550 yen. It's cheap. The most expensive seafood noodles are 800 yen. There are also rice dishes and set meals at reasonable prices. It's a Chinese restaurant with a wide variety of dishes at affordable prices. They also offer medicinal cuisine, banquet dishes, and even Peking duck, making it a restaurant with a wide range of Chinese dishes. I asked the landlady who came to take the order for the "Chinese chirashi" priced at 650 yen. So, what exactly is the hidden soul food of Obihiro citizens, "Chinese chirashi"? Despite the name "chirashi," it's not vinegar rice. It's a dish where stir-fried vegetables, pork, and scrambled eggs are placed on a bowl of rice. Its prototype was born in 1970 at a popular restaurant in Obihiro called "Kappo Shochiku," where it was a staff meal. It was later introduced by the owner of "Ajifuku," who had previously worked at "Shochiku." "Ajifuku" is considered the originator of Chinese chirashi, but the owner of "Shunkaro" also comes from "Shochiku," and it is said that the name "Chinese chirashi" was given by regular customers of "Shunkaro." The dish was served in about 10 minutes. It came with a set of "Chinese chirashi," pickles, and wakame seaweed soup. So, let's eat♪ Mmm, delicious. The dish is filled with thinly sliced pork, wood ear mushrooms, green peppers, bean sprouts, onions, and scrambled eggs. It has a slightly sweet and savory seasoning but is light and easy to eat. The combination of crispy wood ear mushrooms, eggs, and pork is delicious. It's not like a Chinese rice bowl with sauce poured over it. I quickly finished eating while replenishing salt with pickles, moistening my throat with wakame seaweed soup, and eating rice. I hardly used the spoon that came with it. I finished it in no time♪ It was delicious. Thank you for the meal♪ (Visited on April 26, 2022) (Posted on September 13, 2022)
