When I visited in August 2023, I had 3.49 bottles of Sapporo Classic beer in medium bottles (600 ml x 2) and Matsue pickles (350 yen), the daily set meal (700 yen), and salted mackerel with salmon roe (800 yen) for a total of 3,050 yen. Due to my lack of knowledge, I couldn't find a comfortable spot at the racetrack, so I left after only two races. I decided to head to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market off-site. It was about a 10-minute walk from the racetrack, and even though it was still before noon, the market was quiet with few tourists around. I couldn't find anything for everyday use among all the crab being sold at the stalls. However, I remembered a bookmarked store and decided to check it out. Despite having already eaten curry for breakfast, I was still feeling light and decided to give it a try. I found the store at 11:55, although it was a bit hidden. I preferred its understated exterior over the flashy market stalls. Inside, there was the landlady and a part-time lady with two other customers. It seems the peak time is in the morning. I should really try to visit in the morning next time. I asked if they had beer, and they brought out Sapporo Classic in medium bottles. The price wasn't listed, but I estimated it to be around 600 yen based on the total bill. I enjoyed it with the Matsue pickles, which had a nice texture with dried radish and salmon roe. The neighboring customer ordered silver whiting and a tamagoyaki, which looked delicious. I was tempted, but I ultimately decided on the daily set meal with salted mackerel and added some salmon roe on the side. The salted mackerel was a bit salty, and the size was smaller than expected for 700 yen, but it was still decent. The stir-fried komatsuna and chikuwa with takuan were comforting, and the miso soup with shiitake mushrooms, carrots, and konjac was delicious. Lastly, I indulged in a self-serve salmon roe bowl with a side of Matsue pickles. It was incredibly luxurious for 800 yen. I had two beers, added some salmon roe, and the total came to 3,050 yen, which felt surprisingly cheap. The only downside was the handling of the grilled fish, but I guess it's understandable for a small shop. Before leaving, I asked the landlady about the place where they sell whole fish outside the market, and she kindly pointed me in the right direction. It was a cozy, homely restaurant.
