It seems to be quite a famous restaurant. Unfortunately, it was full when we arrived, so we had to wait for a while before getting a table. The menu featured red curry and black curry as the main dishes, and as beginners, we decided to order a half & half so we could try both. The red curry had large pieces of chicken and a hint of tomato-like acidity. The black curry also had big beef pieces and was topped with cream, with a slight bitterness to it. Even though the half & half should have only included red and black curry roux, there was another brown roux on the side. Initially, it didn't seem special when tasted alone, but when mixed with the red and black curry, it enhanced the flavor magically. Ultimately, mixing all three roux evenly created the best taste, where no single flavor stood out. Personally, I felt like saying, "Just mix all three roux from the start," but everyone has different preferences. They also offered other curries like Keema curry, Butter Chicken curry, and even a "Whim Curry," which can also be ordered as a half & half. I would like to come back and try more varieties at this curry restaurant.

I have used this restaurant several times! I wanted to order two types of European-style curry, red curry and black curry, but the black curry was sold out because I arrived late. So, I ordered red curry with 350g of rice (you can choose from 200g to 400g for free). It had been a while since I last visited, but the taste was consistently delicious! I will visit regularly.

On a regular day for lunch, I had the daily special and a half-and-half of red soup. It cost 1000 yen! The daily special that day was mapo curry. Hmm, it was a bit too salty for my taste. I'm glad I got the half-and-half. The red soup was reliably delicious. I think the red-black half-and-half is the best choice after all.

Both curry roux are of a thin type, with moderate spiciness
The "red" is cooked with chicken and vegetable broth and tomato sauce, while the "black" is an Italian-style dish cooked with beef in red wine
Personally, I prefer the "red" one (⋈◍>◡<◍)✧♡
Adjusted the slightly lacking spiciness with the "chili" powder on the table and enjoyed finishing the meal!
* "Biwako Spice" - mild spiciness & "Chili" - strong spiciness
Thank you for the meal.

On Monday before 1 pm, two of us visited the restaurant and just managed to get a seat! We ordered the following items: Mustard Chicken Curry (Chef's Special) for 850 yen, and Red Black Half & Half for 1000 yen. If you order 200g of rice, you get a discount of 50 yen. You can also choose to have extra curry sauce for 50 yen, or opt for minced meat for an additional 100 yen. The Mustard Chicken Curry was unique with a flavor unlike anything I've had before, but still delicious. The Black Beef was as tender as always. Thank you for the meal!

Karaksu Curry, located a 3-5 minute walk from Shijo Station, is a popular curry restaurant where you can enjoy hearty European-style curry, which is rare in Kyoto. The interior of the restaurant is small with only counter seats, making it a great choice for small groups looking to enjoy curry. We tried the Red-Black Half & Half curry with a topping of onsen egg. This luxurious menu allows you to enjoy both the flavorful red curry with chicken in a broth and the tender beef in the black curry at the same time. The sweetness of the vegetables, the richness of the meat, and the lingering spiciness all combined to create a delicious experience whether eaten separately or mixed together. You can also adjust the amount of rice to fully enjoy the curry, so be sure to visit and try it for yourself. Thank you for the meal!

Around 1:30 pm on a regular day, I had lunch alone. The counter was almost full, with many foreigners. The beef curry was sold out, so I chose the chicken curry with red sauce and 150g of rice. It cost 850 yen, but with 150g of rice, it was discounted by 50 yen. The curry was two-layered and had a rich flavor. It wasn't very spicy. The chicken thigh meat was so tender that it could be easily shredded with a spoon. The curry itself wasn't very spicy, so adding some of the small spices on the table made it even more delicious!

A curry restaurant located in a good area near Shijo-Karasuma. I arrived at 10 am for check-out and found out they open at 11:30 am. I decided to wait for about an hour at a cafe nearby. Time flew by and when I checked, it was already 28 minutes later. I headed back and saw a line of about six people. It's a popular place! The counter seats about seven people. Luckily, I managed to get in on the first round. I ordered a curry with a mix of black and red, topped with double cheese, egg, and a large salad. The salad was huge, a sign of Kansai hospitality. The red curry had a strong and sweet tomato flavor, while the black curry had a Kansai-style kick. When mixed, it created a Kansai sweet and savory taste. It was a classic and well-made curry. Kansai seems to be getting more refined. That's what it's all about.

Kyoto European-style curry journey (Shimogyo Ward edition). Located at the western end of the popular gourmet area "Ayanokoji area" in Kyoto. At a highly popular restaurant, I tried the red-black half & half curry. It has a quite sweet flavor, making it very easy to eat, but it might be considered the extreme north of curry in terms of spiciness. Personally, I think it could use a bit more kick, but even on a weekday at noon, the restaurant was already full with a line outside. Next time, I might try the two kinds of curry or the spicier options.

Ordered: Keema curry and salad (1100 yen). This curry restaurant has been selected for the Michelin Bib Gourmand. I was in the mood for a spicy curry that day, so I chose Keema. As for the taste, it left me with a bit of a meh impression.

I visited Karakusa Curry after a long time. There were no customers when I arrived, but two came in after me. I sat at the counter in the back. I ordered the Half & Half curry for 1,000 yen with an additional 100 yen for cheese. The service was very polite as always. When asked about the amount of rice, I instinctively said "normal," and they gave me 250g. (You can choose between 250g to 400g). The curry arrived at 18:06. I asked, "What is Biwako Spice?" and was told it's a slightly spicy spice. The red curry was chicken, and the black was beef. I usually go to spice curry restaurants, but I really love Karakusa Curry. I especially like the black curry, the richness is amazing. The volume of meat is addictive. The regular customers had unique orders, so I aim to become a semi-regular who can order without looking at the menu. I will visit again, thank you for the meal.

It was a night with heavy snowfall. There were two customers when I arrived, and two more came in later.
- Black Curry
- Butter Chicken
Half & Half for 1,000 yen
Onsen egg for 100 yen
I chose 300g of rice. The special curry was Root Vegetable Pork Curry, which I was curious about, but I have other regular curries I haven't tried yet, so I resisted. It was my first time trying Butter Chicken. It was creamy, rich, with a good balance of spice and heat. It was delicious. I think I've tried all the regular curries now. The black curry is my favorite by far. The red curry is in second place, followed closely by the other curries. Among the European-style curries, the black curry here competes with Taiyo Curry and is at the top (at least in my opinion). I managed to finish the 300g of rice easily. Thank you for the meal.

This time, I visited four curry restaurants in Kyoto. For the fourth and final stop, I chose "Karakusa Curry." Kyoto is extremely cold at this time of year. Since its first appearance in the "Michelin Guide Kyoto 2021," it has continued to receive the Bib Gourmand in 2022 and 2023. I am not particularly a Michelin follower, but I decided to visit this place that I have been curious about for a while. The following will continue with photos.

The night before, on my way to the ramen shop, I saw a line outside a curry restaurant. It was the first day of many companies' year-end holidays, and I arrived at 12 o'clock to find a wait of 3 people. I waited for about 15 minutes. I ordered the regular menu item, the red-black half & half. The spicy black curry was beef curry, not too spicy. It had plenty of richness and flavor. The sweeter red curry was chicken curry based on broth. You might find it sweet at first. The beef and chicken were chunky but tender, flavorful, and delicious. Thank you for the meal. I wonder if this is also a European-style curry. It was delicious.

This morning on my way to work, I noticed a sign on the glass that said KARAKUSA, which I pass by every day. It seemed like a curry place called Karakusa Curry, and the reviews looked pretty good. I was planning to visit Shichisan Curry today, but I decided to try Karakusa instead. The restaurant had 2 staff members and around 7 counter seats. I ordered the red and black mixed curry. The red curry was a light chicken curry, and the black curry was a beef curry with a taste similar to Bumblebee's, with a hint of sweetness in the aftertaste. The black curry was delicious! When I mixed the red and black curry together, it became even more delicious! The side dish of lotus root was also tasty with a hint of cumin. It was so delicious - thank you for the meal!

Kyoto has many unique curry restaurants. Their menu includes red and black curry, as well as keema curry. The red curry is made with chicken and a rich broth, while the black curry is cooked slowly with beef and deep spices. The red curry has a strong acidity, while the black curry has a thick and hearty taste. The rice portion ranges from 250g to 400g for the same price, so you can choose 400g to fill your stomach. Thank you for the meal!

On a regular day just after opening. First customer. No one else came in afterwards. Ordered a half serving of red and black for ¥1000. It took about 2 minutes. The red was a spicy type with a kick. The chicken pieces were large and juicy, very delicious. The black had a strong coriander aroma, making it hard to distinguish other spices. The beef pieces were also large and one of them had a delicious broth flavor from simmering. However, both meats were not falling apart tender. They were definitely tasty, but nothing particularly outstanding.

Today, I went to a curry restaurant near Shijo-Karasuma.
Kara-Kusa Curry seems to be a popular European-style curry restaurant, as it had a Michelin Guide seal on the door. Inside the long, narrow restaurant, there were long wooden counter seats.
Looking at the menu, curry dishes ranged from 900 yen to 1,100 yen, with rice portions of 250g to 400g priced the same.
When I placed my order, I was served lotus root pickles, which had a crunchy texture and seemed like a good side dish for curry.
I ordered the Red Black Half & Half, a combination of the popular Red Curry Rice and Black Curry Rice. I chose 300g of rice. The chunky chicken and beef were very impressive. The black curry, made by simmering beef in red wine, had a smooth richness and depth of flavor. The tender beef came in two large pieces. Mixing yogurt into the roux made the flavor even smoother. The red curry was spicy, with a hint of vegetable broth umami. The three plump chicken pieces were also delightful. The 300g rice portion was just the right amount of volume. Both the red and black curries had distinct characteristics and were fantastic. With the large chicken and beef pieces, it felt very satisfying and fulfilling.

I ordered the Red and Black Half & Half curry with 300g of rice for 1000 yen. They even offer a free increase in portion size from 250g to 400g! I was seated right away after the restaurant opened, so I didn't have to wait long. The combination of the sharp spiciness from the red curry and the bold spiciness from the black curry was very pleasant. Thank you for the meal.

There is a unique European-style curry restaurant in Kyoto, Shijo called "Karaxa Curry." Despite being a small counter-focused restaurant, it was selected as a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide 2022. While the genre is European-style curry, they offer completely original and innovative curries. Let's take a look at the menu. They have a "Red Curry Rice" with plenty of chicken and a flavorful broth, and a "Black Curry Rice" with slowly simmered beef and deep spices. Additionally, they offer "Keema Curry," "Butter Chicken Curry," and a "Chef's Special Curry." The highlight is the "Red and Black Half & Half" for ¥1000, where the contrast between the red and black curries is visually stunning. But that's not all. If you look closely, you'll see that each curry has another layer of differently colored curry on the outside. In fact, the European-style curries made by "Karaxa Curry" have a two-layer structure - one for "Umami Roux" (inside) and one for "Aroma Roux" (outside). European-style curries are known for their rich flavors and depth, but the spices' aroma can often get lost. By separating them, they achieve a fragrant European-style curry. Not only the curry, but even the rice has mixed barley, showing attention to detail. This dish, born out of ingenuity and meticulous care, was truly appreciated.
