Kikyo-ya Orii's milk tofu, made with kuzu, reminded me of the milk pudding my late mother used to make. The paper spoon was a nice touch of nostalgia. The milk honey tofu with azuki beans was a pleasant surprise. The matcha milk tofu had a refreshing and delicious taste. Hikage Chaya's lotus root mochi is a summer limited dessert available from April to August. I was lucky to buy the last piece. I also found a nice souvenir, Mizumanju, for my mother-in-law. Some items are available only on specific days, so it's best to check in advance if you have something specific in mind.

This is a select shop located in Shinjuku Takashimaya. I came here looking for eel pie (VSOP), and although I'm not sure if they always have it in stock, they still had plenty when I visited, so I bought 2 boxes. The macadamia nuts give it a fragrant and crunchy texture, with a nice hint of brandy. This is it, this is the one. The alcohol flavor isn't too strong, but if you're not a fan, be cautious. It's more expensive than regular eel pie, but it's definitely worth it. The fact that you can't buy it everywhere adds to its special appeal. I hope they restock it regularly.

■Tsukimado Mochi (2 pieces) 270 yen
I went to the store on the following day, Wednesday, even though it was written that they only restock on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The product description was very appealing and I was drawn to it because it's a rare item that only comes in on the fourth Tuesday. The texture is soft and elegant. The authentic bracken flour flavor and the unique scent of green soybean kinako are great. It's easy to eat in one bite and not too sweet, so I could keep eating endlessly if I had more. *The register can get quite busy around 2 pm on weekdays. Payment method: PayPay. Thank you for the meal!

There is a corner in the food section of Takashimaya where you can find famous local specialties from all over Japan. In addition to the classics, they also offer a selection of daily or monthly changing sweets that you can mix and match. I really wanted to buy the "Ote Manju" from Okayama, but since I had to travel in the scorching sun for half a day afterwards, I decided to save it for next time. So, I ended up buying only the "Genji Maki" from Tsuwano as a souvenir. It was perfect with its refreshing sweet bean paste as a little treat with tea.

Takashimaya in Shinjuku, once again. I've been going there quite frequently this month, but I don't have any plans to go next month yet, so I need to check out the places I'm interested in. They have a variety of snacks from different countries, and I like that you can buy them individually. It's great for trying them out before buying them as gifts or for ordering them. The peanut pie from Chiba is good, but the pie itself is light and doesn't compare to the filling. I think I still prefer traditional manju. The salt dorayaki from Kanazawa is definitely salty. There's a hint of saltiness coming from the sweet red bean paste filling. It's quite substantial and satisfying. Trying out different snacks is fun.

Gorojima Kintoki Sweet Potato Steamed Bun
The moist steamed bun dough is filled with Gorojima Kintoki sweet potato paste, a type of Kaga vegetable. I purchased it at the "Traveling Japanese Sweets" event held at Shinjuku Takashimaya. There were many charming Japanese sweets to choose from, and I was captivated by the cute wagashi. The dough, made with Koshihikari rice flour, intrigued me. The texture was slightly sticky, but the sweet potato flavor was rich. The sweet potato paste filling was absolutely delicious! It had a natural sweet potato aroma, smooth texture, and was so delicious that I wanted to keep eating it.

This is a select shop located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The shop is located on the basement floor of Takashimaya Shinjuku store, just a 1-minute walk from Shinjuku Station on various lines. The shop offers a selection of delicious Japanese sweets from all over the country, including traditional and seasonal treats. One popular item is the 12-piece box of Eel Pie for 891 yen (excluding tax). This snack has been handmade by artisans since 1961, using carefully selected wheat flour and eel extract in the dough, along with specially refined granulated sugar. It's a classic and delicious treat that has been enjoyed for generations.

Momiji Manju (sweet bean paste filling), Momiji Manju (matcha), Steamed Chestnuts, Kaki Korogi, Caramel Kuridama, purchased for take-out. This shop offers a variety of regional specialties and seasonal treats. I was able to purchase a variety of sweets in small quantities. The Momiji Manju has a chewy skin, which sets it apart from the typical Momiji Manju. The Caramel Kuridama, made from Yamanashi chestnuts, and other seasonal treats were all delicious. Although everything was tasty, nothing stood out to me personally. I look forward to trying the limited edition and other specialties next time I visit this shop.

Shinjuku Takashimaya B1F, at the regional sweets select shop "Meigashi Hyakusen," I carefully selected some treats.
1. "Warabimaki, ¥130": A cute sweet from Shimane Prefecture, made by Sanmatsudo. It's a thin rolled cake with sweet red bean paste inside. Simple ingredients with only baking powder as an additive. It has a soft texture that is just right, not too firm or too soft.
2. "Kyoto Kinugasa Roll, ¥398": A sweet from Kyoto by Sanjo Wakasaya. It has a crispy and sweet thin baked tile-like dough rolled with something white inside. The crispy dough and the hard texture of the filling create a unique and delicious taste. The black sesame flavor in the dough adds a delicious aroma that lingers on the palate. It's addictive and you'll finish it in no time.
3. "Salt Dorayaki, ¥184": A treat from Kanazawa by Rakugan Morieya. It's a dorayaki with two pieces, where the red bean paste is wrapped in a folded piece of dough. It has a subtle sweet and salty taste. The slight saltiness enhances the rich sweetness, creating a unique and delicious flavor.
Overall, the quality and variety of treats at this shop are superior compared to other department store food halls.

Fukushima: "I recommend the salted red bean paste mochi that has been passed down in my family. I have always enjoyed the red bean paste and chestnut red bean paste at this favorite Japanese confectionery shop. The salted red bean paste is made with "snow salt" added to the smooth red bean paste. As always, it goes well with the chewy mochi dough.
Yamaguchi: "Mihorido Kurotsubuan" This black tsubuan is kneaded with Okinawan black sugar, giving it a rich sweetness and depth of flavor compared to the refreshing taste of white tsubuan.

Today, I bought some sweet chestnut paste and a low-calorie hojicha latte anko daifuku from Suya Kurikinton (Japanese confectionery) and Eitaro. The chestnut paste was popular and made with only chestnuts and sugar, which intrigued me. The taste was simple and gentle, nothing extraordinary, but good for a change. I probably won't buy it again though. The hojicha daifuku from Eitaro was just a regular daifuku with hojicha flavor, so I don't plan on buying it again either. I will visit this store again to find other delicious treats.
