旅浪漫
I arrived on Iriomote Island during my spring 2020 trip to the Yaeyama Islands. Despite the ongoing state of emergency, the sky is clear and blue, but the sea is gloomy, and the exhaust fumes from passing trucks fill the air - it feels like I'm in Osaka's Taisho Ward. As you may know, Taisho Ward in Osaka is home to a quarter of the population of Okinawa natives and their relatives, making it a Little Okinawa. There are Okinawan restaurants scattered all around, including Pinaisara near the Hirao bus stop on Taisho Street. Although they are currently not open for dinner, I decided to visit for their morning service from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. The restaurant has a counter with 9 seats, 2 tables for 6 people, a raised tatami seating area with 10 seats, and a smoking-permitted terrace with 2 seats. The name Pinaisara comes from a waterfall on Iriomote Island, and the owner, Mr. Kyan, is originally from Motobu on the main island of Okinawa. Mr. Kyan, a small but sharp-eyed man, is a 8th-dan in Goju-ryu Karate and teaches traditional Okinawan karate at his home dojo. I decided to try their recommended breakfast set, which comes with 15 different drink options. I chose the breakfast set with coffee. After about 10 minutes, my order arrived. The tray included rice, miso soup, pork with scrambled eggs, and a salad. The hot coffee I ordered also came with it. The meal was delicious. While there are many Okinawan restaurants in Taisho Ward, finding one that serves Okinawan-style breakfast is quite rare. The soft rice, tofu, cabbage, bean sprouts miso soup, two slices of luncheon meat, sunny-side-up eggs, and salad with cabbage and kaiware were all tasty. The coffee after the meal was still warm and satisfying. The background music playing Okinawan folk songs made it feel like I was on Iriomote Island. I enjoyed my meal while watching the news on TV. For only 500 yen, I would definitely come back to try their night service with my wife, especially since I noticed a jar of awamori placed on the counter. But I'll have to be careful not to get too drunk and provoke Mr. Kyan's karate skills! Thank you for the delicious meal.
