Gourmet Journey Part 7 - Hokkaido Crossing Edition (Ashikawa Region with Extreme Temperature Differences)
Located near the Jokawajinja Shrine, just a short walk from the Ashikawa Jampu Rotary, this restaurant has an old-fashioned exterior with a modern twist. It is a renovated historic building, the former Kitajima Flour Mill built in 1924. It has even been recognized by the "Ashikawa Historical Building Preservation Society". It's commendable that people appreciate it, but it seems like a limited recognition, haha. Anyway, it's nice to see local young people preserving the old culture in a contemporary way and revitalizing the area. It could be a theme for a novel!
I tried:
- Fukuyoshi Latte 520 yen
- Tokiwa Yaki (Red Bean) 250 yen
- Tokiwa Yaki (Ham Mayo Cheese) 270 yen
Total: 1,040 yen
First, the Fukuyoshi Latte. It's a drink made with matcha, milk, and red bean, a tried and tested combination that tastes really good. The red bean isn't too sweet, making it easy to drink. The wide straw allows the red bean bits to flow through, which was a nice touch. It's a drink that would appeal to those who like sweet Japanese-style drinks!
Next, the Tokiwa Yaki. The crispy outer layer wraps the filling nicely, giving it a croissant-like texture. Unlike the drink, the red bean in this was sweet, so eating it with the latte made it a bit too sweet. The Ham Mayo was salty, so it paired well with the sweet drink, and the croissant and ham combination was delicious on its own. Overall, the drinks, food, and interior were well thought out and beautifully presented, giving off a trendy vibe that's becoming more popular in places like Nihonbashi and Tokyo Station.
For those looking for a cozy cafe with a great ambiance near Ashikawa Station to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, I highly recommend this place!
