Today, I went to visit a grave and then headed to Karyo Itoen, the main store in Fukakusa, Fushimi Ward. This shop started making tile senbei on the path to Inaba Yakushi. They are known for not only selling sweets but also for their famous vegetable-based lunches. Today, I went for lunch. Cafe hours: 10:00-11:00, 14:00-18:00. Lunch hours: 11:00-14:00. Arrived at 11:45 and there were already 5 groups ahead of us! While waiting, we browsed through the products. Despite being in a not-so-easy-to-reach location, the store was crowded with many people. It's clear that it's a popular place. They had freshly baked apple pie (¥146 including tax!), canelé, cakes, pudding, and more. They also had a variety of traditional Japanese and Western sweets, snacks like senbei, ramune, kinpaito, jelly (cute!), amber sugar, and more adorable treats. Before we knew it, we were called in (laughs). The interior of the store was lovely. I had tried their vegetable curry before, so this time I went for the 10-vegetable rice bowl with sauce (¥1485). It was so luxurious! First, we were served with small side dishes like spicy green beans, dried daikon radish, pickles, and a soup (with daikon and carrots!). All of them were comforting and delicious. The vegetable rice bowl was filled with large chunks of vegetables, colorful and satisfying to eat. It was relatively mild in flavor, which paired well with the side dishes. The rice inside was mixed grain rice, which complemented the gentle flavor of the sauce perfectly. Despite being vegetable-focused, the portion was generous and left us feeling full! It was also very satisfying and priced at ¥1485, it was a great deal. I decided to add a drink set (+¥220). We got cold brew iced tea and cold brew iced coffee, splitting them between my mother and me. Both were refreshing and had a robust flavor. After the fulfilling lunch, we bought some souvenirs: Nagano Purple Daifuku (¥216), apple pie (¥146), amber sugar, etc. Not only the lunch but the sweets were also reasonably priced! We started with the daifuku, which was chewy and had a large Nagano Purple grape inside! The soft mochi texture, juicy grape, and crispy texture harmonized perfectly. For ¥216, the taste was exceptional. The apple pie was a treat. And when we bought amber sugar, they gave us some rice crackers (Bariuma Sen) for free since they were close to their expiration date. The crispy texture was enjoyable, and the sweet and salty soy sauce flavor was nostalgic and addictive (laughs). It was well-received by my family too. It was a great bonus gift! The quality of the eat-in and take-out options exceeded the price, making it a popular place that makes you want to come back again. I would love to try their sweets during cafe time next time. Please give it a try when you get a chance. Thank you for reading.
