Located at 506 Nakauoyacho, Nishikikoji-dori, Kiyamachi-dori, Nijo-dori, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto, Tanabeya is a long-established store specializing in bonito flakes and dried goods, founded in 1830 (Tenpo 1). It is a must-visit spot in Kyoto's Nishiki Market, known as the kitchen of Kyoto. The store is just 10 meters from the west entrance of Nishiki Market. They are open from 9:00 to 18:00 and closed on Sundays. On Saturdays, they offer an eat-in option from around 10:30 to 17:00 (until sold out).
I met my friends at the west entrance of Nishiki Market, where we saw tourists in yukata being led by a guide. We stood near the former residence of Ito Jakuchu, a famous painter from the late Edo period. After meeting up, we explored the 390-meter-long Nishiki Market shopping street, known for its colorful arcade. We enjoyed browsing through various Kyoto vegetables, pickles, tofu, sushi, and more.
I was particularly interested in purchasing "Goshiki Goma" (Five-color Sesame) from Tanabeya. This sesame blend includes carrot, pumpkin, spinach, tomato, plum powder, matcha, and seaweed powder. It is free of artificial additives and has a beautiful color combination. If you are looking for a souvenir, the Goshiki Goma from Tanabeya is a great choice. Alternatively, there is a similar product called "Nishiki Goma" available at Shimamoto Nori in Nishiki Market.
Overall, our visit to Nishiki Market was delightful, and I would recommend stopping by for a light lunch while exploring the market. Next, we headed to Kyoto Station.
