The other day, I visited a cafe called Sunny Side Up, which was recommended to me by someone I know who is close to the owner of the cafe. As the autumn leaves in the flatlands are progressing, riding my bike through the mountainous areas, I can already see some trees where the leaves have fallen, signaling the approach of winter. The cafe is located in the northwest of Lake Toya, away from the Lake Toya hot spring town, offering a peaceful place to enjoy the serene view of Lake Toya. I parked my bike in a corner of the spacious parking lot and entered the cafe, where I changed into slippers after taking off my boots at the entrance. The bright and airy interior of the cafe, with large windows facing the beautiful autumn leaves at Fumido Park, was a delightful sight. Although I knew that taking photos inside was not allowed, there were no other customers, and the autumn leaves were so beautiful that I asked for permission to take some photos, which the owner graciously granted. I ordered the weekend-only Koha Lunch, which included a pot-au-feu, raising my expectations. The pot-au-feu soup was delicious, with a mild flavor that suited my taste perfectly. It contained bacon and chicken wings, adding a rich flavor to the soup. The vegetables in the pot-au-feu were also delicious, with radishes and turnips offering a unique taste, reminiscent of a Western-style oden. The leaf salad with Muroran kombu salt and crispy burdock chips complemented each other well, while the tofu sprinkled with cumin and salt was surprisingly tasty. The tofu dish, shaped like a thick omelette made with tofu and edamame, was also very delicious. After the meal, I enjoyed a French roast coffee and had a great time. The owner, who spoke softly and had a gentle demeanor, turned out to be a fellow bike enthusiast. He owned a 1991 Honda XR250, a reverse-import off-road bike. As I shared my experience of owning off-road bikes like a 1992 KTM250 Enduro and a 1996 TM125 Enduro, the owner revealed that he had also owned a 1991 KTM250 Enduro, sparking a lively conversation about enduro bikes. He even noticed my Max Fritz gear, as he had purchased jeans at the former Sapporo store before it moved to its current location, further deepening our connection. It seems that the cafe will be open during the winter this year, adding another reason to look forward to visiting Lake Toya in the winter. Thank you for the wonderful meal.
