Kinsho Hanzo-suke opened in the basement of Keio Department Store Shinjuku in May 2023. It is a counter-only store with a slightly luxurious feel, like other shops in commercial facilities. The main item on the menu is of course tempura rice bowls. The Ebi-Ten Maki (1,281 yen) seems to be a limited menu item, but it was sold out on the day of my visit. I had the Joten Don (1,281 yen), which is a standard-priced item, but it seems to have increased slightly due to the high cost of living. The tempura toppings include two prawns, squid, white fish, eggplant, green chili pepper, and seaweed. The tempura is not freshly fried, so the batter is moist, but when you eat it, you can taste the exceptional deliciousness that sets Kinsho Hanzo-suke apart. The container is not microwave-safe, so I ate it as it was, but it was still delicious. The moist batter, coated in sauce, is tasty, and it's good enough to eat with rice. The secret to its deliciousness lies in the sauce, and it's even better with plenty of sauce. That's why additional sauce is provided. All the tempura toppings are of good quality. The main prawns are quite large, and the squid is thick and flavorful. The white fish is a type of globefish, and although it's small, it has a substantial volume as tempura. The white fish has a strong flavor, which doesn't lose to Kinsho Hanzo-suke's seasoning. The texture of the dorsal fin may be a bit noticeable, but the overall deliciousness stands out more. The oil is of good quality, with good oil drainage, making it moist but not heavy, and you can also taste the aroma of sesame oil. It's well-executed down to the smallest details. A piece of yuzu peel is included, adding a nice fragrance. As a condiment, shichimi togarashi is provided, but it's more like black shichimi with a strong aroma of sansho pepper rather than spiciness. The rice portion is not too large, and the deliciousness makes it easy for even those with a small appetite to finish a bowl. If you happen to eat only the tempura first, pickles are served to balance it out. Kinsho Hanzo-suke offers delicious tempura rice bowls, and the number of shops selling them is rapidly increasing. It's sure to become a staple in the department store basement. Despite being a bit pricey, it's always delicious, making it a reliable restaurant.
